Don't feel to bad for Elisha. He was part owner of the Graybar Electric Company. Which today is still one of the largest suppliers of electric and voice data supplies who still today suck up large amounts of money for over priced items.
It was that money he used to try and patent the telephone.
I feel like I may be the one defending the great Satan here (Theo). But I will state a few things so no one jumps the gun to fast.
Theo doesn't really need defending. He quite capable of doing that himself.
Theo is passionate. A trait most people don't have and others can't deal with.
Theo dispute was that the issue was everyone who was cc on the inital email by Michael Buesch. The code dispute was brought up on a driver that didn't work. And the tone of the initial email was at the very least condescending.
Theo defended what he felt was an attack on one of his developers. Something Theo is rightly passionate about. Theo did not dispute the code was there. He does dispute who wrote the code. He did take personally to defending one of his developers. Good for him.
I have seen the posts in this thread by others including Bruce Perens:
Oh? So, if I take my record collection and commit it to a public CVS repository, that's going to be OK with RIAA, then?:-)
Actually if I couldn't play any of the music because the code it was written in didn't work. I don't think anyone would really say anything except your files don't work and therefore suck. I think the RIAA would have a tough time winning a prosecution just because you had a bunch of files labeled as music files. That doesn't mean the RIAA wouldn't try and you would probably not be happy about it. Theo didn't seem happy about what was being done to one of his developers.
Again the initial tone and the number of people cc in Michael's letter was the problem.
Many of you have said that Theo was upset about being caught with GPL code in his CVS. Well isn't this how other developers get to make commits and corrections to code?(I may be wrong here don't be afraid to correct me I can take it) So a driver that doesn't work and is under development has some GPL code in it. Wouldn't one of the commits be to mention there is some GPL code in the drive that may need to be dealt with? (Instead of sending a harshly worded letter and cc the world on it?)
I am not a developer but I have to admit if I were I would want be one for OpenBSD because I know that I am going to work with people who strive to do the best and have someone who has their backs.
Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has caused a great deal of FUD amongst beekeepers, farmers, and the media. So speculation is running rampant. I am receiving 20 or more media stories a day on CCD. Most of them are copies of the same story. The media is asking us and other beekeepers lots of questions. The unfortunate fact is there are not a lot of answers. The studies are taking place but everything is so preliminary right now that they are still debating the possible causes. Symptons are still being discussed.
The American Beekeeping Federation through one of it's subsideraries held a discussion in Stuart area of Florida. This is mentioned in the NY Times article. The meeting wasn't held to discuss a cure it was held to discuss the progress of the research. Unfortunatly the meeting was invitation only.
The Mid Atlantic Apiculture is heading the reasearch into CCD. The most up to date information can be found on their site.
Some notes on the reasearch. Currently it is only involving commercial beekeepers with mulitple hives. Hobbiest are not included. And since this is preliminary research there are no control groups or investigation into feral bees as to weather or not they are having this issue. The study according to Troy with the ABF does not involve different breeds of bees. So there is no seperate breakdown on how it affects Italians, russians, hygenics, buckfast, or other breeds. Please understand that Italians are by far the most common type of bee used.
Commerical beekeepers are also the main focus since this affects their livelyhood. if you have 1000 hives and loose 400 of them to CCD that is a lot of money gone. If you are a hobbiest and you lose a hive life sucks but the impact isn't the same.
Yes cgi access gives them a virtual shell, you can control how it functions.
You should be using mod_security. http://understudy.net/tutorials.php?name=wget comes back failed
You can run limited ablity shell accounts such as scponlyc (chrooted version of scponly)
If the target server is running one of the vulnerable scripts at specific URLs and is configured to permit external shell commands and remote file download in the PHP/CGI environment, a copy of the worm could be downloaded and executed.
1. don't permit external shell access through you www accounts. Make all you www accounts shell be/usr/bin/false. I realize that some people need cli access but it should be severly limited in it's functions and only used by those who have a real need.
2. don't permit php/cgi scripts that are explotiable. Okay that is a broad general statement , however there are well known malicious scripts and well known explotiable scripts. Don't allow them. And certainly don't allow them if cli access is being used.
3. do apply your security patches (after testing).
4. Host with a good website company like 34sp.com (shameless plug with who I am hosted on)
Okay under $100. It's free

Here is a review of of several operating systems. That are suppose to complete several functions.
However being that I actually bothered to read the article I noticed a few things that bugged me. We installed each of the Linux distributions side-by-side with Windows XP We installed Windows XP and Mac OS X without partitioning the hard drive. Both operating systems include partitioning software that deletes your existing operating system and data.
So basically they installed MacOS and WinXP on a entire hard drive and then did a dual boot setup with Linux. They mention how certain versions of Linux will partition the hard drive and certain versions won't. They however don't give the same break to Linux. Try installing Linux on it's own hard drive. Windows and Mac software are more than capable to delete the exisiting software, well hell I can do that also with Linux.
Xandros was the only Linux distribution that didn't come with a LiveCD. Windows XP and Mac OS X aren't available on LiveCDs
Yet this is the only place they mention that live cd issue. Why is it not in the bad column under the bullet points for WinXP and Mac.
Easy-to-access software updates and security patches and fixes can save you time and hassle. Mac OS X and Windows XP automatically check for new updates and patches at specific times as long as you're connected to the internet. You can change the default settings if you wish. None of the Linux distributions offer automatic updates, but you can either download patches and updates from each manufacturers' website, or by using Linspire Click-N-Run or Xandros Networks. SuSE Linux and Mandrakelinux offer to look for updates during installation.
That is so you don't just throw a patch in there and have it create more problems. I still remember WinNT sp6 and the Lotus Notes issue and several others.
Unlike Windows XP, the Linux distributions and Mac OS X also let you restrict a program, such as ICQ, to a single user account. Additionally, in Linux and Mac OS X, the administrator is the only account with access to universal settings and files.
This is a good thing remember that.
Windows XP was the only operating system that couldn't recognise and open an imported Excel file -- the included office software is very basic so you need to install Microsoft Office or another more advanced program.
Even Linux distro's require Open Office or other software to be installed to read an Excel file the difference is that you can usually install them right after you install the OS. It may be included in the box set on one of the CDs or you can download it. Either way you don't have to go out and spend more than you paid for the operating system.
The difficulties with installing new software using a linux-based operating system arise when you want to install software from elsewhere.
I won't disagree here, extracting tarballs, unpacking an RPM, trying to have apt-get install a program can be a bit of a bear. Making sure you have all your dependincies. The difference is that if something goes wrong you can at least look into it. If the.exe doesn't install properly you are pretty much screwed. Now with FreeBSD you can install your programs from the ports tree with "make install distclean" or a package from the cd or ftp sites with "pkg_add -r foo". The dependincies will get installed automatically.
