  1. You are a dangerouds idiot on NASA/MSFC Director Speaks Out on Radiation Safety · · Score: 2

It takes a lot of radiation to rise above safe levels.

That is if you strictly view this from a medical x-ray stand point. These are not your standard maedical xrays. They are about a 1000 times more powerful they have to photograph welds and structual componets for safety defects. And althou a medical xray is done almost with a camera like quickness. Structal xrays can be on for a long time in some cases xray video is done.

X ray rad is typically blocked by a resonably thick brick wall.

Wrong again in hospital settings all the walls must afford some level of lead shielding or must have a self contained piece of equipment with lead bariers that must be assembled. Xray levels through block walls are not low enough to count block wall as a safe barrier. One item is, lead.

The equipment used for testing items like this is huge in some cases and that is the stuff they are taking about the safety protocols on this kind of x-ray equipment are many and to be stricly enforced. One flash of an xray may not be harmful in and of itself but typicaly this equipment is taking thousnds of those flashes and often at much higher levels than normal medical xrays. If the equipment was in a room with a filled cinder block wall as it's barrier and the confrence room is on the other side of that wall(not a likely scenerio) and there is all all day staff meeeting in there. Xray machine works all day. A couple of hundred images. Those people are toast. Not nessacarily right then and there but easily within 5 years. If not due to some form of cancer and/or massive tumor outbreak, something similar.

The movie The China Syndrome was a great example of what happens with improper xrays of welds althou the movie didn't show what real weld xray exammining is like(hey it's hollywood). The premesis is the same as what is happening now with someone forging records.

There are a lot of safety procedures that go into doing this. They are time consuming and difficult but they are there for a couple of good reasons, liablity and bad PR.

Now that users under 13 are having problems they switch over to AIM which doesn't seem to be imposing these restrictions. Strange thou doesn't AOL own ICQ. It would appear that they are trying to phase out the company they bought and once again monoplize their product. If AOL has been enforcing this age limit on AIM I have seen no example of it.

  5. Disposable Society on The Leased Life? · · Score: 1

You live in a highly disposable society. Objects are not built to last for the long term and are eary to replace than rebuild. Watch what happens with your dryer and see what it cost to replace a major part vs. a new dryer. The worst thing about this is we accept and condone it, even encourage it. In this day and age keeping up with the jones's isn't a quaint saying it's the battle cry of the corprate world. Based on the fact that if you don't your competition will eat you. If not them your stockholders who will "dispose" of their holdings if you don't perform to expectations. This day and age want tobe able to go on to the next without looking back, as an example look at the size of your average landfill. Most are at least the size of a football field if not larger. In some areas it takes up the most land in a city or town or other municiplality. This idea of not having any tangiable holdings such as software, music or even money(in this electronic age cash is becoming a non physical item) is going to continue until something dramatic happens. And that would have to be on the extreme end otherwise the effect will become worse. However there are to be positive results with this if it happens correctly(fat chance). They would include a less materalistic society you can't covet something if it is easily avalibile. Also a non-monetary based system(this is about as therotical as the study of quantum mathmatics but that helped find black holes.) If materials are easily avalibile their intrinsict value is reduced and in the electronic banking age and cash not backed by gold, cash as a comodity slowly starts to become unnesaccary. I am not saying what would replace cash this is a lot of theroy and many things could but it would have to get to this stage. If you don't like what you see don't participate in it. You don't have to lease a car you could by it, just don't take a loan out to do it. Same with the house. You could work a job that doesn't involve working on propritary software, but you might have to get your hands dirty and how much would it pay. Even then cashing your check usually invoves a charge if you don't have a bank account(sometimes even if you do.). Your not obligated to participate in it or even like it. Hell that's what the hippy movement of the sixties tried to do. Look at where the Chicago 7 are now.

After the recent crash the smart money ppl were buying left and right and making a fortune within a couple of days but the analysts were on TV screaming and the news focused on nothing but. So when the idiot analyst speaks the stupid stockholder listens and the greedy broker makes his commision either way.
