I am not an American, but let me tell you, no media will oppose a war, at least while at war. Critical analysis is always done afterwards, in a quiet and constructive way. And there is apparently a good reason to do so. Why shout and demoralize your own soldiers?
A corporate media sells news, it is a fact, but you guys(Americans) have it pretty lucky. Every issue has 2 sides, and you know which corporation is on which side. Simply put, check 2 sites, and you are done with your information and analysis part. In my country, 100's of views on every bloody subject, and you get all sort of clowns riding the media, from hard core communists to socialist democrats to anarchists to self proclaimed pundits to respected till recently editors to skin bare females to free market supporters... I can go on all day. I wander so much for reliable news and commentary that I have reached here.
The idea of humanism and solidarity seems to be missing entirely from the anglo-saxon ethos and the media cultivates thinly veiled vulgar social-darwinist ideas.
Whoa, slow down comrade/christian/conspiracy theorist. You could be more heard (modded up) had you put the above quote in you sig.
The whole world is crazy as it is, and pointing out to one place only shows where you are from. Understand it, and go ahead with it. Change it, and you are just changing the parameters that define craziness.
people in India are forced to work insane hours for a quarter of what we earn in the West, but fret no, salaries are going up and it is a matter of 3 or 4 years before they are comparable to Western standards, the turnover rate over there is atrocious, because techie people over there are not stupid: as soon as they get a better skill set they move on. In my experience this is at the very least 40% a year of attrition rate, so you always have a half competent group of people, half of which will leave very soon. Some companies are waking up to this fact, but some others are going ahead like a blinded lemming with suicidal thoughts
OK, now the other side of the story, from an Indian. Of the workforce in India, 50% fall in the below 30 age group, so all are relatively new to IT. And most are not Comp Sci Engineers, any tech grad can find an IT job here. Even though the attrition is a major problem, it is being compensated by fresh recruits, who are willing to work for even lesser salaries. So its not just an offshoring from US to India, it is also from Comp sci to any grad, from IIT's to local colleges, and from urban areas to rural populace.
But all this Labor shortage is just a myth. A small ex: From Reliance Industries to McKinsey, everybody is jumping on undergrads to take them into consulting/management roles, train them and use them cheap, rather than get an MBA grad. And only two days ago was there a mention of MBA grads shortage in India.
This is not funny, it is true. Humans have that sense of instinct (not experience, Instinct) that computers don't have. An expert would always be better than such a device.
Also, why all this paranoia about what would happen with such devices if they are small enough and can be used easily(not like sticking electrodes into the brain)? I'm thinking of ways to escape this, by better morphing of objects i see into objects i imagine. Something like when you read a book, you can imagine the characters and their faces and "see" them...Or if you are listening to a song and watching another video, I don't think there will be a way to tell then. My brain is my own, and I am the master to it. Good luck with that machine if you are trying to read into my terrorist plans:)
I came across this interesting example of a guy teaching his granny or someone what a driver is. "Imagine that you suddenly acquired a new hand. but you dont know how to use it. So you read a book, and figure out how to deal with it. The new hand is the hardware, and the book is the driver"
Cool. But looking back, we intuitively knew this. When Neo was being fed those martial skills, we knew what exactly was happening. A tool(stick, nunchaku ) was made a part of his body. This is what is driving.
Fuck it, I say the reverse is true, our limbs and senses and other parts are just like other tools, just that we have them built in.. sort of a readymade kit, for the purpose of survival. I can go ahead and extend it, but that would become philosophy. But this is a cool new way of seeing things.
Why does terrorism mean only Islamic fundamentalist bombing? Seriously folks, get a world wide view.
When LTTE bombs jama masjid in Hyderabad, or when tamil tigers kill a minister, or when burma regime kills a monk, or when political parties in Somalia or Kenya kill people, your IRA, all these are examples of terrorism too.
Terrorism is just a means to a political objective. Don't kid yourself when Bin-Laden says that the whole America should convert to Islam, he doesn't mean it. All he wants is lesser interference of the west in middle east. Tamil tigers want a separate state, and LTTE wants an autonomous Kashmir. The means is essentially to create terror.
I don't buy what article is selling, but I see where the author is coming from. Engineers just want to get their work done, without much ado and chaos in other places. He thinks terrorism is similar, and thus the correlation. Pretty shallow thinking, if anybody knows where to apply job as a columnist in these sort of papers, please mail me.
In India, many carriers provide unlimited text messaging for free, at a nominal fee of Rs 30 ($0.75) for prepaid plans and totally free for post-paid. This is the way they transmit sms'es.
For the other arguments about paying back for the infrastructure etc, here is what many networks in India do: They charge for sms'es a cost of 1 rupee(about $0.025) per sms on holidays, where people send bulk msgs. Cool idea, also they advertise through sms.
Why cant US network operators do this?
(Need to get back to my own calculations, I dont want to be left behind in "Damn these corporates sucking out our blood" thing. )
Fundamentally, there is no difference between what Grameen bank does in Bangladesh and what the sup prime mortgage industry in US does, sell to poor. The key difference is that of intent, Grameen is genuinely interested in helping the poor, but the moneylenders in US are trying to make money. Note that Grameen is not in for charity, but not in for money either. I guess this is what Bill Gates was referring to, when he said "Kinder Capitalism".
I don't think we should discriminate based on who said it, but what was being said. All of us can see the irony here, but how many of us are willing to see the point? I guess this is a good turn of events, A rich businessman focusing on (helping) the poor. This is like a strong statement of intent, and I sincerely hope to see some form of action plan from Microsoft towards it( well, I know this is not gonna happen , but still...). Somebody, please take the lead.
The point is that most organizations don't care, they just want IE6. I am a java developer, but due to company constraints, I have to design my jsp's too. As if struts2.0 is not a bitch enough, I have to develop it for IE6. Work-arounds for IE6 are much more time consuming, but try to argue with someone who doesn't know the difference between database and bad-data. Most companies just want their work done, with the least bit of extra hassle, and it is almost always the developers who have to face suicide or testing it on IE.(My manager is pretty happy about this though, says we can ask for more time to deliver.)
Yes, but intuition has no scientific validity...
I am not quite sure of that.Every theory has some axioms behind it, or has a theory that has axioms behind it. Axioms are necessarily common denominator intuitions, accepted by all, and well tested. This research comes under the category of proving an axiom using a different model, something like proving 0+0=0 using group theory or something. Group theory(In this case, biomed) in turn can be used to prove or establish many other interesting theories (or invent your popping pills), but this particular research , if anything , should prove that biomed is a valid way of finding out more. Not otherwise.
I might be missing some of your other questions(Why, and How are important, for ex.) but they can be thought of as independent to this research. With quite few other areas being explored in this field, this experiment looks kinda dull.
Simply put, much ado over nothing.
Hey, if our brain stimulates scenarios playing what-if and we don't remember the details of it, what if we come across a scenario similar to one our brain created? do we call it Deja-vu?.... Need to RTFA now, and find out more.
There are many cleaner ways to generate electricity than nuclear. I wonder what research is going on into these other ways. Is it "green" hype that is causing articles like these to emerge? I think we need better and practical "green" solutions(like that boat with a sail thing a few days ago). Or else, there is bound to be a demand for such mini generators. If it is cheap, and properly maintained, the reactor will be up and running, (I can clearly see a power hungry nation like China or India setting up slightly bigger versions under Govt. control). History has shown us that we give much priority to our present comforts than environment.
If any organization is interested in doing something for the world, They better innovate. Till then, people who don't care to put it on themselves to start a change(like me) are going to be pleased with what they get.
The problem is that our brain has been doing linear thinking from a long time. We really don't have the ability to multi thread, I don't know if it is possible to train our brains to think "in threads". An algorithm is essentially a single thread model, so are many of the control statements(if, for and while). I don't think it is sufficient to make a loop run in 100 threads for faster time, the loop in itself need to be changed. It is a special ability, and we might just end up abusing multi-threading by incorporating it into our linear brains. Still, it might be a start, and I really think it would do a lot good for the future of computing.
As I recall many sleepless nights, I wasn't "allowed" to use calculator. I sometimes tried to be honest, but most of the time, I wasn't.
The point I am trying to make is that laptops are not necessary for elementary education. In some subjects it might hamper the growth of a student too. The pro's , if any, could be satisfied by having a computer lab. Similar to a library. The points in replies to my post haven't convinced me of a necessity , and no literature on the net I have read till now did. I still think it is a total waste of effort and goodwill.
I don't understand the point in giving a laptop to a child yet.
screwing up the education of Nigeria's children and putting them at a serious disadvantage to the country's neighbors. Seriously, Can anybody explain why laptops are so essential for education? Forget laptops, we were not supposed to use even calculators for those lengthy calculations in chemistry in out Undergrad entrance exam. Why then, are laptops so crucial for a child future?
Figure this out:
I am trying to solve a 1st order differential equation, I would like a pencil and a paper to work this out. NOT a laptop.
I cannot how a 10 year old is going to learn maths or chemistry (for that matter, his local language) in a laptop.
Spending is an industry now, get over it. I have a credit card only because some of the payments I make on the net need to be done through credit card. But I don't expect everybody else to have good sense. Instill good sense in people and hope for the best?? Today it is more of "lure them, fool them, get rich or die trying".
What world do you guys live in???
Every government wants to make itself more powerful and the rival government weaker. I'm not talking about US or China, almost all the countries with any significant military would do so. Yahoo is just trying to earn some bread(in a reductionist way) in difficult circumstances. I don't support Yahoo or US government or Chinese Govt. in this, but all throughout our history, this was the same thing happening.
Wake me up when a for-profit entity refuses to bend its laws, even if it faces certain death in the hands of public authority, just for the sake of its ideals.
I wonder why no one until now mentioned rights. Smoking is bad, and dutiful parents would like to have their children smoke free. Maybe thats why government introduced the legislation. But after a point, a child is not a child anymore, he grows up and he has the right to smoke, making an individual judgement. At what age does this transition occur? Maybe government thought that when he gets voting rights, he should be knowledgible enough to make a choice and kill himself.
Why smoking is totally not banned? Historical reasons, and now, corporate pressure.
What if the horrible memory to be altered is due to a photograph, say for example, goatse? Not so lucky now are we?
