    Nope...

This was cold introduction to postgresql. Then on the postgresql site I found a link to this: Practical PostgreSQL.

Now, I am familar with setting up different databases, but postgresql to me was very easy. My experience with mysql has been similar, but it didn't seem as clean to me as postgresql.

For a real nightmare setup either firebird. Not a whit of documentation for that database.

The basic Postgresql installation is a bit of a pain to get up and running with a basic database, which keeps pushing new users to MySQL, [snip]

Hmmm, even one of the developers in the article seemed to think that, which I didn't get.

For myself I found setting up postgresql to be a cinch. It was basically an initdb, if I remember right, then createdb. One of those commands needed a path for the data. Then you run pg_ctl start. Once the database was created and started you use psql to login and create users with permissions, which I'd assume has to be done on any database. Then create tables and go at it.

That was for setting up my home setup. I think I needed to edit one file to setup security for logins on remote hosts which was pretty self explaintory.

The hardest part was finding a jdbc driver, which didn't take too long. I found one that claimed to be better than the one that came with postgresql and droppped the .jar in the classpath and tada, instant database.

All said and done, just setting up and getting running probably takesless than two hours. And that was starting from emerge postgres.

Certainly its not like oracle and all enterprise like and what not, but it was sure a heck of a lot easier to setup.

Compared to mysql? I dunno, I'd rate it about as easy. I've setup mysql before, but it still didn't seem a clean a setup to me. That might just be me though.

However, when I happen to call up some friends to head out for dinner, I usually will call up another married couple around my age group who has similar interests as I do.

What you seem to be missing is that the genders are different, period. You seem to imply that the flaw in the parent's arguement is that there are sterile women who cannot give birth. There is an even larger set of the population that cannot give birth, men.

What this study is doing is grouping folks according to gender, which is perfectly valid. When there is a clear tendency among a group, gender or otherwise, it is valid to study that tendency.

Men tend to have a stabler personality during PMS, women tend to be more emotional during PMS. We don't study men during PMS, why? I think we need to take people as individuals... No, cause its stupid in the extreme, thats why we don't take people as individuals in studies on PMS.

The only way this study would be invalid would be if men did not perform better in spatial orientation, in which their initial premise was wrong. However, the study shows that men tend to do better in spatial orientation then women, so they attempt to see why, see if there is something to help women perform better.

Do you have the same outrage at studies that show inner city kids perform lower in schools than suburban or rural schools? How dare they group people by where they live instead of taking them as individuals?

Your post seems to imply that, but equal implies a value difference. I know I wouldn't consider that my wife has a different value than I. We do compliment each other though. She is very good at debugging, I am very good at putting bugs in code for instance...

On a more serious note though, complaining about the potential security of this is valid. Perhaps there should be something that requires notification of the parents and then they can set the password.

However, the concept is great. It empowers the parent in many respects to be able to check the status of their childs education. It allows them to see on a regular basis where the child might need help. Create a website to access the Access databases through. Use ODBC/JDBC connections to the DB instead of using local Access forms and reports. Beyond that you can also setup any database behind the scenes with it.

The company I work for deals with CU's for archival. Since I've been here we've used Access and MSSQL as our back end and IIS/asp/msjava combination. We are moving from that to a database independent and real java/servlet environment.

One thing to remember is that if you create a website to access the database data through you will need to fork out real money to either a developer to build the site and maintain it, or assign that as someone's job. Over all it is a good idea since you then can be on any type of machine and access/update the data instead of a machine that requires Access on it.

There is a difference between sharing data that you only own a license to listen to (p2p filesharing of copyrighted content) and using the content to which you own a license to use.

Should you be able to rip CDs, sure. Should you be able to distribute the content, only if you own the copyright to it. If you own a scratched CD and want to go download the content so you can listen to it again, download it in such a way that your license can be verified, but since I don't know a way for that to be done, bummer. Contact the vendor or distributer and tell them you want a new copy of the disk, pay for the material to make the disk and delivery though. Its not the distributers fault you scrached the disk.
