Probably Disney would sue everyone for infringment upon their Mickey Mouse Voice(tm)(c)(r).
Assuming that technology advances as it has for the last 6000 years, we have some method to fix the problem or decide it isn't a problem.
Right now we do not have a solution for the carbon released from combustion engines entering the environment again. However, consider that if we did not use any fossil fuels currently, we would not have the energy to even embark on the search for fusion power. So, maybe beyond fusion power there is another source of energy. Dilithium crystals maybe?
Beat'm... beat'm twice a day whether they need it or not. My pa gave us an ass whoop'in twice a day everyday, except when we were bad, then it was more. It made me the man I am today, a homicidal, red headed step child. Hmmm, on the other hand maybe this isn't such good advice...
Note to humor impaired social workers: don't waste your time looking up my folks, they weren't really like that at all.
My CD drive is actually SCSI and the card doesn't support booting from SCSI, so I only have floppy as an option to boot from. I can't see why the world doesn't see things like I do, I mean doesn't everyone have the same setup I have?
Got it. Yeah, assuming that you have a not taxes till $x it is progressive. However, if your $x == 0 then it is a true flat tax.
One of my big hangups are exemptions and and tax breaks though. Basically these allow the government to determine in a odd sort of way what is acceptable. Such as having kids is promoted through additional tax breaks for dependents. Here's one that slashdot will like [/sarcasm]: tithing, the government gives tax breaks when you give to the church! Another example (often local governements) will give businesses tax breaks to setup in their town to draw additional people to the town, which maybe help local economies, but by being preferential, other local economies suffer.
Some folks think, what about people who donate to colleges and get buildings named after them. If they didn't donate the the colleges they'd [colleges] not be able to afford new buildings. We have to give tax breaks to big donations like that. The guy who would donate needs to learn the meaning of altruistic and philanthropic.
Nowhere did I say that's my view. All I was saying is that his plan is bound to be lambasted by the left...
My bad, I was confused, thinking you were saying the flat tax idea was bad. That and it was more a general comment.
A lot of folks forget that the Kennedys are not exactly a poor family, though they seem to champion the poor quite a bit.
Its tough to make any people happy any of the time...
Yeah, he didn't have a true flat tax, but it was better than our current system.
Do you mean graduated when you say progressive? Or more to the point, what do you mean when you say progressive?
If you look at our current system its a mess. I tithe and also donate to a number of charities. I tack on my heath costs, last years tax filing cost, interest paid on student loans, and a number of other deductions. It takes the tax preparer nearly 2 hours to do my taxes. It'd be much nicer to have x% period go to taxes, period.
Yeah, Forbes (the senior dead one) was the richest man at one point. I'm sure the money hasn't gone anywhere either. but just because something is proposed by a rich man does not mean he is out to get the poor man.
I was all Forbes last time through the primaries. Nothing like a yummy flat tax.
A real flat tax would be great. x% no matter how much you make, no deductions for giving to churches or charities (make them REAL donations not tax holes). x% no matter if you are a 13yo farm hand or a 54yo CEO of IBM. Indescriminant to your race, first house, how much you make, everything.
Granted Forbes will probably never make it and even if he did a flat tax in even two terms of a president is more than I could ever hope after having our messed up graduated tax with deductions for everything.
Imagine just laughing at H&R Block and Intuit and just writing a check for x% of what you made this year. Doing taxes would take 10 minutes! That'd be great.
I think its more likely MS doesn't try to cut ads, come on this is MS, they'll have more adds than hotbot and worse placement than searchking.
I think they'll resort to their usual tactic of making google show up wrong in their broswer. Oh, I don't know why all your search results come back in japanese characters. Or why you seem to have to hit the search button twice. I think that will be more likely the way it happens when MS comes up with their own search engine.
DAMN YOU SLASHDOT FOR MAKING ME A CONSIRACY THEORY NUT!
Basically you are fear mongering with this. Yes, he shouldn't have modified the picture, but I seriously doubt there was an executive order to modify the picture.
Yeah, its not like we do anything other than work on military items. Then entire US sits around and works on weapons. I'm just having a hard time figuring out how the bank archival software I work on is going to be used to kill.
You have fallen to the falacy that a lot of OSS complainers fall for. Just because there are people working on one project does not mean that those projects take talent away from another.
Gnome/GTK and KDE/QT don't steal resources from each other. They work on seperate task, but that doesn't mean that there now is less developers for Apache or the linux kernel.
Back to your complaining...
Just because there is a company out there that works on "friggin lasers" doesn't mean that another company isn't working on a cure for cancer. Since we've had this crazy thing called the industrial revolution we are able to specialize and work in different fields.
So, the optimum solution for you is to put your energy towards ways of peace, brotherhood, etc... Enjoy your life. Just remember there are others out there that have different goals than yours, and seeing how you do not own/control all the resources you have to put up with others doing what they want with their resources.
Another comment here too. So, when you are busy with your unified vision of the world that all people should work together and be nice, what are you going to do when someone else decides the don't have the same vision of the world, or they decide their vision of the world is "lets enslave all those that we can."
As long as the governement doesn't dislike it. Yeah, google.de not having links to pro-nazi and yahoo.fr having auctions of WWII paraphenilia (sp?) removed?
The US has some liberties issues, however to consider EU otherwise is foolish. Everywhere you go there is an encroachment upon your rights. And many places there will be examples of how they are also expanding your freedoms. It just doesn't make the headlines.
You do not have a right to make money. You have the right to *try* and make money. If your business model is flawed, don't cry, change your business model.
Now for the redundant car analogy. If GM sold its cars for cost (say maybe $5000) then if you wanted to put gas in it you needed to buy GM gas exclusively, that would be considered a joke.
Now, consider that if someone reverse engineered the GM engine and made a compatible gas for one of those cars and sold the gas at 1/2 the cost of GM gas. This would be valid.
Now the lexmark part of this is that the reverse engineering is illegal since it is a "digital" medium, but it is quite possible to physically do. So, the goverment is protecting lexmark's business model that is not sustainable on its own merits.
Now, the government does support certain industries that are not always sustainable, such as amtrack and airlines when they are hurting since it is considered in the interest of commerce and national interests. Is lexmarks ink cartarges a national interest to the government? I'll leave that as an excersize of the reader...
You were one of the few to vote spam is never wrong a couple weeks ago on the slashdot poll?
They've used my bandwidth decieving me to go to their site. Just as spammers decieve me into thinking their mail is valid.
I'm not all for this law, though I am in no way supportive of porn. One would wish folks hawking their wares would come out and say what they are selling instead of beating around the bush. Reminds me of pyramid marketers on the phone or advertising in college career services catalogs.
This is kind of a misleading idea, java has not fallen flat on its face. On the desktop it was b0rked by MS, however on the server where MS isn't, java is very common.
Even where MS is, like at my company, we are moving from IIS and MS java to real java so we implement on any platform.
The point is that java is alive and well, just not where you see it. Its like linux, in that respect, you don't know its there cause it does its job in the background, not on the desktop.
Very good.:-) I like it. More and more of Yurop seems to be turning into the commies that we have to bomb though. Real shame that one of our amusment parks will get destroyed.
Probably Disney would sue everyone for infringment upon their Mickey Mouse Voice(tm)(c)(r).

Flat percentage rate. Like everyone pays 10% no matter what they make, no matter what they donate, no deductions.
Thats why we get a receipt at the end of the year. Do a check instead of cash also if you want to be able to track it.
Yeah, I know you get tax breaks with charities also.
Though I would prefer no tax breaks for all those, I still use them while they are part of the tax code.
My CD drive is actually SCSI and the card doesn't support booting from SCSI, so I only have floppy as an option to boot from. I can't see why the world doesn't see things like I do, I mean doesn't everyone have the same setup I have?

Europe being the bastion of free thought?

Right around when the warrenty comes up too, huh?
Not that I support the patriot act...
You might want to read up a little on the success rate. Here it says in Desert Storm they had a 70% success in Saudi Arabia and 40% in Isreal.
Here the us army seems to think that the new version seems to work. They also seem to think it works well here too.
The patriot missile is not some pie in the sky dream. It does work. It may not necessarily be 100%, but 40-70% is better and 0%.
I don't know the tech that goes into something like this for sure, but I'd imagine that it could also be used for something like meteors.
No, if xml was a programming langauge:

New around here? :-P Or just so liberal even France seems conservative to you?
The internet is not the neighborhood you describe. You are not authorized to use my resources just because I don't secure them properly.
You were one of the few to vote spam is never wrong a couple weeks ago on the slashdot poll?

France isn't participating either, but I wouldn't expect unbiased news from France either.
8. Missing feature.
Very good. :-) I like it. More and more of Yurop seems to be turning into the commies that we have to bomb though. Real shame that one of our amusment parks will get destroyed.
I have to agree with your parent comment though.

Two different things. Not that this isn't an issue, but they are two different problems.
But, but then trolls will be trolls.
Patch'm up folks.
