Popularity doesn't matter to me so much - as long as enough people use it so that there is software developed for it. I use Linux because it does what I want better than the alternatives.
Android had to start out at ground level. Microsoft had been making smartphone OS's for years. (Windows Mobile 2003; Windows Mobile 5; Windows Mobile 6; Windows Mobile 6.5)
I love MTs, but the new 5 and 6 speed automatics are very close to a MT in fuel economy. And you don't get the fuel economy savings with a manual if you don't shift it right - I know plenty of idiots who get poorer fuel economy because of their poor shifting habits. In the US, automatics may cost more initally, but usually have higher resale value. And MT versions of some cars are hard to find, and usually are stripped lower end versions.
I find maintenence costs for a MT higher than an automatic - replacing a clutch once costs more than the costs of the number of transmission fluid changes needed to go the same number of miles. Plus I can change the tranny fluid myself, making it even cheaper.
My large sedan gets roughly twice the mileage of a 1965 VW Beetle
My 1974 VW beetle got around 25-28 mpg, driving it in the Washington, DC metro area. I was not a gentle driver. A 1965 should get better, since it had to meet fewer emission and safety (added weight) requirements.
A day? Must not have been Verizon. Last year we lost the dial tone, and it took Verizon 2 1/2 weeks to fix it. And talking with others I found out that it is pretty typical for Verizon. Of course, after they fixed the dial tone problem they forgot to turn the DSL back on, and it took another week to get the DSL back up.
While PG county had its problems, there are areas in Montgomery county that aren't exactly "nice". I hear about the problems with crime, bad schools, etc from my co-workers who live in Montgomery county. I'm glad I don't live in one co-workers neighborhood in Gaithersberg - she has had her house broken into a number of times. Strangely enough, that has never happened to me or my neighbors here in PG county. While overall Montgomery county may be better, you have enough problems that you shouldn't be too smug. And compared to my in-laws neighborhood in Mclean, Va, most of Montgomery county doesn't look too hot.
Even though I have lived in PG county for over 30 years (post college), the only time my car has been vandalized was in Montgomery county.
Both of my kids are in Prince Georges County public schools. They are both in the science and technology magnet program at Eleanor Roosevelt HS. Two years ago, they used mygradebook.com for teachers to use, and it was a breeze to check on grades, see what assignments were due (and what assignments were missing), etc. It was an easy sytem to use, and worked well. Last year ERHS was forced to use the SchoolMax system. It was a disaster. So I'm not surprised that the problem was caused by the SchoolMax software.
I don't know anyone who has ever had to buy a replacement hard drive.
I've gone through 20-30 drives between home & work. Of course, quite a few were the infamous IBM deathstar drives. But I've had IBM, seagate, conner, maxtor, and HP drives fail. Some have failed after only a year (the deathstars less than that). I try to get cases with good cooling, and add fans for the hard drives, but I still have some fail.
Until a year and a half ago, my computer was a 566Mhz Celeron with 384MB of memory. I ran CentOS 4 (RHEL 4) with KDE. The only problems with it was that over an evening of web surfing, the browser could take 200MB+ of memory, and it was too slow to play DVDs and downloaded videos.
The replacement system is a 2.2GHZ Athalon X2 with 2GB memory, and onboard graphics, and CentOS 4. Does everything I need.

I stopped buying Sony products years ago when I realized that they were breaking more often than my other equipment.
I joined the Linux kernel mailing list in January 1992 - well before something as advanced as 0.12!

Anything from Linuxinsider I would take with a healty dose of skepticism - it's better known for their anti linux shills.
health costs especially in major urban areas with smog pollution
Of course, the pollution is moved from the tailpipe to the powerplant.
I find that (for me) 16:10 is the best of all worlds. 4:3 isn't wide enough, and 16:9 isn't tall enough.
I think you are referring to Sun's NeWS. It was also used by SGI as the windowing system under Irix 3.
It took how many years for Miguel de Icaza to realize this? Most of us could have told him that with seconds.
Of course, MTBF != maximum number of write cycles for a SSD.
Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

You care enough to be reading this thread.
I'll sell you my copyrighted/patented hyper turbo method of saving time for only $699/cpu. Cash and credit cards only.
It's a simple but effective technique - Just don't click on threads you don't care about.
This is about Linus Torvalds, not Tiger Woods.

"Hydrogen Energy". Think of the Hindenberg.

They are, essentially, paying over $512 per student for this software.
No, there are 130,000 students in Prince Georges County public schools. So that works out to $31.54 per student.

I bought two Celery 300A cpus - both overclocked to 450. Conversely, I had an Athlon 2800 that kept crashing until I underclocked it.

Which will be released as "Windows Mojave"?
Because people will desert it?
The simple answer is to encrypt your drives. However, in some countries, they have or are looking at laws that will force you to turn over your keys.
