I've been suffering from insomnia for a while now. I can fall asleep without much trouble. The problem is I only get about 3 hours of sleep before waking up. Then I either cannot fall back asleep, or I go on a cycle of sleeping for 5-10 minutes and waking up again, over and over all night long. By the time morning arrives, I am completely exhausted, I get no REM sleep, and basically cannot function at all during the day.
And of course if you dilute the cool the temperature will rise and cause a "pleasing to the eye" turquoise screen of death with soft edges and fluid animations.
I have dreamed for years of being able to scan my computer for viruses with so much computing power that I can even do other tasks at the same time. Wow, computing has come a long way.
It's a small free newspaper, containing only brief news stories. It's got all the sections of a normal paper Top Stories, World, Local, Classifieds, Entertainment, and puzzles. But it's a mini-newspaper about half the physical size of a normal one so it's more suitable for reading on a crowded train. I can usually read everything on my way to work, and solve the Sudoku on my way back (unless I screw up). They have people at every metro stop giving them out to everybody, and I mean everybody. Express papers outnumber all other regular papers in any subway car by at least 20 to 1. They must make more than enough money off ads to cover all the costs because of the high readership. They don't have to compete with online services anytime soon, and it gives WP an audience that wouldn't normally buy a newspaper for their ride to work. There's even a few copycats in the area now so they must be on to something.
It's this kind of adaptation that will make newspapers survive.
I remember back in the 2GB to 20GB era a larger harddrive always had a lower cost per GigaByte. A 10GB drive might cost $200, but a 20GB drive would cost $350. In recent years this trend has reversed - anyone know why? Are they not just adding platters anymore? It is just mark-up for mark-ups sake?
Canada does have a highway. It's intelligently named the "Trans-Canada Highway". It makes giving directions to different cities very easy: "East" or "West".
I'm surprized you didn't even mention Peak Oil. It will have a huge part in the downfall of the worldwide economy. Oil will become the primary source of inflation (if it isn't already).
People complaining about $2.30/gallon have absolutely no idea what is coming down the pipe, and how much their lives will be changed by $5/gal gasoline (my 2010 prediction). Not only will their houses be depreciating at 10% per year, their cost of transportation, energy, and shipping will be rising at 30% per year. It doesn't even take a doomsday theorist to see there will be some hard times ahead for the no-money down morgage, SUV-driving, credit card debt, plasma TV owner.
I agree with you, for a similar but different reason. Like everyone else, I kept hearing nothing except "OMG Serenity is going to be awesome, I can't wait", so I had to watch the Firefly DVD's to see what it's all about.
In short, yeah, it's a great show, I've watched every episode twice now *. I'm looking forward to the movie, but a Firefly movie is not what I really want. I want to watch another 2-3 years of episodes of the TV show. There's so much crap on TV these days that it makes me cry that neither I, nor Fox supported this show when it was airing. I know I'm not going to be satisfied with an additional 1 hour and 45 minutes more Firefly. The show had potential for such a great, long tv series on par with Babylon 5, ST DS9 etc.
Hopefully the movie will be such a big success that Fox will wake up, resign Whedon & cast and start making episodes again.
* I watched 'Our Mrs Reynolds' three times, you know why
They offered to make him a transformer rendition of himself named "Speilbergatron". It doesn't transfom itself, rather it transforms great movie ideas into a steaming pile poop.
MythTV was working on Xbox-Linux almost two years ago. Why wait one year and pay $350+ when you can do all that, plus have Xbox Media Center (which is a better interface than MythTV), right now for $200?
So much time to develop? Pfft! Here I am, and I'm still waiting for the first release of Microsoft Bob. They've been working on it for so long, I can't even imagine how awesome it will be. It will solve all our problems.
The stock market doesn't work backwards, it works forwards. Let's put it this way - if you wait until Dec 31st to decide to buy Google because it's P/E in fact did turn out to be $7/share then guess what... the stock will already be trading well above $300, probably more like $350 because traders will then be anticipating what Google will earn in 2006. You will have missed the opportunity to profit. That's why you don't use historical numbers to predict where a stock will be worth in the future.
If you use last year's profit to gauge Google's P/E (113) it looks like an overvalued stock. But Google posted an HUGE 1st quarter profit with a target of about $6 per share this year. At the current price of $285, that makes Google's current P/E 47.5 which is less than both Yahoo and Ebay and they're not growing anywhere near as fast as Google. This is what is fueling the recent rally.
I wonder what research they've done to prove that stopping piracy will increase their profits. We used to copy cassette tapes all the time, low fidelity be damned. It was all about combining the purchasing power of 5 of my friends allowances which enabled us to buy and listen to more music than any one of us could by ourselves. Taking away our ability to copy music would not have made us spend more.
Actually when I was a kid I didn't put this together on my own. My mom told me they were the same guy and that brought me to the horrible conclusion that Star Wars was in fact not real (gasp!). That was a really bad day, thanks for reminding me.
I have a cold right now. And so I downloaded and watched it at home instead of going to the theater and coughing and sneezing my germs onto everybody. So I'm actually HELPING the theater by keeping it a clean, healthy, place to enjoy a movie, and I feel very noble for doing so.
Of course, it's just coincidence I always get colds when movies I want to see are in theaters.
In the finance world it's called hedging your bets. You want to dip your toes in both ends of the pool, just in case.

This will certainly breathe new life into multi-angle porn DVD's.

What The Washington Post did was create a co-publication called "Express" that's targeted at subway commuters:

You forgot they now show television commercials in theaters before the feature film. Just think of how many there will be in the future!
So figure about 12 hours.
My best feat was memorizing:
UDUDLRLRBA Select Start
And it actually had a practical application.

...not to mention the videotape, dvd's, latex, 900 numbers, credit cards, and the jackhammer.

Where have we heard that before?

Your math isn't right. Google's projected earnings this year is between $6 and $7, not $2.50.
