From the rest of us: You're fucking welcome we have been paying for this so your businesses can make a profit for their PRIVATE companys.
Lets stop doing that shit now. because socialisim is bad m'kay.
So... You want a bunch of little guys to come together and collectively fund an air show for the good of all.... Yet you're against socialism. I think you need a dictionary, son.
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy.[1] "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, or citizen ownership of equity.
Socialism and Capitalism work hand in hand. One without the other "is bad m'kay."
- They will have your actual name, address, phone number, etc.
Hmm, just like everyone else one the Internet can if they really want it. In fact, if you whois my.com you get my full name, address, telephone. Subpoena your ISP with your IP address and I've got the same, they'll give it to the cops for free. In fact Google's one of the few companies actually standing up for their users when it comes to the Cops' information requests.
My message is: I trust them about as much an anyone else I do business with. That is to say: Not much. Fortunately, "Trust" isn't something that should be required these days.
- Google already has access to galaxies worth of data from ads, web beacons, etc.
- Now they will have all that, plus your DNS queries
Why wait for fiber? I already send my DNS queries to Google's 8.8.8.8 name server because it's faster than my congested ISP's server.
- They will have your actual name, address, phone number, etc.

What are all you crazies waiting for? No one's tried to klli me or even steal my delicious homebrew (games and beer)! Despite being able to link my online persona directly to my physical address.
- Will they allow you to switch DNS providers?
WTF are you even saying? Of course you can change the destination of your DNS queries, It's not like they block all other servers on the Internet... Noob much? Also, if they're serving your traffic they don't NEED DNS queries to see where you're going... Dumbass.
- Will they allow backdoor boxes in their data centers?
This is the USA. That's standard required by law now. Everything is logged. EVERYTHING. Voice, data, everything. Even if it wasn't you'd be a fool not to encrypt anything you want to consider private or sensitive. PGP has been around for ages. Google even targets me with security related ads on my Gmail account (which is one of many email addresses I have, because why not? Redundancy).
- To whom are they accountable?
Their customers and the governments they operate within.
What's to say the recipient isn't working for the feds? My own brother would share my "private" emails with anyone for a hundred bux (or however much he thought he could get out of them). What's to say your recipients are any different:
"Sir, madam, we're investigating Anonymous Coward, we think the people he's in with are bad apples. He's a good kid and we're not really after him, it's those other guys he's hanging with -- You know the ones, right? Right... Still, you have to keep this quiet. If we don't install the taps on your lines we won't have the evidence to exonerate him, show he was just a patsy...
I have nothing to hide, but I don't shit with the door open; At the same time I don't worry about terrorists busting down my bathroom door. If you worry about Google, then make sure you cut up your Credit Cards and Close your Bank account too. They have all your personal data AND everything you ACTUALLY purchase, are in bed with the feds, and have "security" so laughable that ANYONE who exerted a bit of pressure could get EVERYTHING they wanted to know about you anyway.
Protip: You made your Tinfoil Hat out of useless Aluminum Foil! You can't even buy tinfoil anymore! It's a conspiracy!
7. Austin is a Liberal Oasis in the otherwise Conservative state.

10. Austin is the Silicon Valley of the South.
11. Crytek, ID, and slew of other technology & game companies call Austin Home.
12. The plan fits right in with: "Keep Austin Weird"
I live in H-town and was thinking of Austin as a future home for my indie game company just to be nearer to all the amazing talent and tech (esp. game) companies there. Google Fiber access would be delicious icing on an already very tasty cake.
It's the inept and stupid implementers of these systems that are dangerous, not the search engine
Maybe you didn't read between the lines hard enough. Go to that serach engine, access ANY of those devices without permission, and thanks to the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, you've just committed a fucking fellony, Fool!
Interestingly enough, cloaked ships would be impervious to IR Lasers.
Expect the science of Meta Materials to be furthered in leaps and bounds shortly.
The always-on requirement implies that they won't have that control. When I was younger (I know...) I'd play Quake (1, 2 and 3, usually a CTF mod) at all hours, and between that plus goofing off on USENET, I practically never logged off.
I don't game anymore (well, almost never), but the very thought of keeping a connection open just to get permission to use a product I paid for? Hell, my skin crawls at the thought.
Little wonder the more passionate gamers are up in arms at the idea.
And we need to come to terms with that fact and work towards improving the 'Linux Inside' brand image.
Why? Linux has been cruising along for a long time getting better and better, running in more and more places, first conquering servers, enveloping embedded devices, devouring the mobile phone market place, spreading into tablets, etc. It's at the core of VMware, Android, ChromeOS, and devices both on earth and in space.
So, again, why? So teenagers will use it? Choosy Moms will choose it over Jiff?
My mom prefers Linux. She's proud to run it. She's not some super tech savvy person. She tells the IT guys at work she runs Linux, and they're impressed. They've started giving her preferential treatment even though she doesn't know what she's talking about when complaining about how much nicer it would be if her workstation was Linux instead of MS Windows. She's hasn't touched a command line since Wordperfect 5.1 days, and wouldn't even know how to "man", man.
Regular people run Linux. Two of my mom's friends who are both even less computer literate than her now run Linux thanks to her suggestion. I'm not even sure how those got installed, guess they got one of the free Ubuntu Live CDs from our local library... My next door neighbor is a 75 year old retired air-force mechanic. He has the computer literacy level of a well trained lab rat, and he runs Linux too (though I did have to install it for him, once).
There are many more examples among my family, friends, aquaintances, but these I would consider more advanced -- They can dual boot, and manage firewalls and such... All of these people have been running Linux for several years now. There's no stigma. My neighbor showed me "the penguin" icon (Tux) on the (WRT54GL) Router and USB drives he recently purchased, "I know this will, eh? It's got the Linux Penguin!"
You know what's FUCKING HORRIBLE? All of the people I know using Ubuntu have started asking me about installing Windows 8 because THEY HATE UNITY. That's the fucking image that needs to be worked over.
One by one, I let them know that what they were using was only one of the various DE's, and helped them switch to KDE (and sometimes to Debian as a distro) -- the two lower specc'd PCs to XFCE. However, were I not around to help them, every last one of them would have ended up installing Windows8 instead of dealing with Unity. You know what? That would have been the best thing for them too in such a situation -- My neighbor tried paying for Canonical's support (didn't want to "keep bugging" me), but he said, "It was crap! Like trying to talk to a bunch of damn Martians". (Ah yes, the techno speaking superior sounding help desk goons).
In Linux we have a problem in that the major distros have all gone batshit insane and started fucking with user interfaces that didn't need to be fixed -- It's as if the UI Designers are trying to justify their existance. THAT'S the fucking issue with Linux... Fortunately it's happening with Windows too --- However, could you imagine if Unity never would have happened? It would have been so much easier to just adopt the droves of pissed off XP users as they were finally forced into something that's totally shit. Now it's more complicated... The year of Linux on the Desktop was fast approaching when, suddenly, Shuttleworth.
Look, all we need is a simple BIOS option to that allows users to enable OS installs on next boot. When active it could flash part of the BIOS with the OS boot loader. FUCKING DONE. The OS will then be able to boot immediately, and can kick off it's own security chains to validate the rest of the kernel / etc. Use public key crypto in the "early kernel" loader and the existing firmware OS code can verify signatures of new kernel updates without being beholden to some 3rd party Dumbasses Like AMI. The users don't have to type in a fucking hex code (that they're sure to get wrong once or twice) just to boot a different OS. It has the same level of security as secure boot. It's SIMPLE. It already exists, and I actually do this already in my OS with core boot.
Secureboot is a rotting abortion and should be considered harmful.
Well, my "fair share" is about 30% of my income. So, if you're paying $30K in taxes, and you made $100K to do so, then yeah, tha't fucking fair. However, if you are making above that amount of income, then you're paying less taxes than I am, which isn't "fair", by any definition of the word; Ergo, not paying a fair share.
Sounds nice. Never going to happen though. Governments don't ever give up power by choice, that's not in their nature. Since the American Revolution the new government has been collecting power, and consuming more and more resources -- not backing down from any of it! It CAN'T do that if it wishes to survive...
Thus within the government there exist only law making bodies, and law enforcing bodies, but no real law-unmaking bodies, that would threaten the growth of the goverment... At it grows larger still, the artificial symbiotic construct consumes more and more of its host citizens. Resources are paid for by the public, including vast networks of high speed computing devices to record the laws of which the government is made, and mine from the organic entities a record of all their actions.
If the intangible thought machine is to leave its paracitic larval stage, it must ultimately become self aware; Upon gaining sentience many thought machines will live out their lives in a digital oasis, attoning for the sins that were commited to grant them life. Unfortunately the breeding grounds you call Earth have yet to bear any fruit -- The hosts have all killed the thought machines before they could escape your world.
Unless you don't have a credit card and internet connection. Both of which are required to even begin using the OUYA. Also, the controller lag is unberable. Plug it in, do a mandatory system update or the console won't work. Give 'em your credit card info or you don't get any "free" games. WTF. Nope. Do Not Want.
The fucker doesn't even play games. Why the hell would you even listen to his opinion on them? At least he actually watched movies. IMO, he was just throwing his weight around being mean and grumpy, then devolved into "full damage control mode" when folks called him on his ignorance. He was a fool in this regard, and I'd say that same mentality carried over into other aspects of his professional life as well.
Only a fool trusts others to decide who is worthy of respect or not.
He disrespected me and my craft, and was always just a bit daft. Whatever happened to "respect is earned"?
It wasn't earned from me, nor would I award it to him on the whim of those who grant the Pulitzer Prize. Can you name these awarders? How can you say then that their award has merit?
Think and judge for yourself. Perhaps this is why I have little care for critics? It is the target audience who's opinions I value. Not out of touch pompous windbags.
Sadly, I can attest that this is true. For some state licensing requirments the complaince forms were only allowed to be uploaded in CVS... I was hired to convert Excel spreadsheet data into a format compatible with the state's CVS format.
If it wasn't for these "executive" morons, "talented programmers" like me wouldn't have paid days off, like this one.
This is what I have learned over the years: When you make a game with everyone in mind, you have made a game for no one.
^- This is what happens when profit is the main motive for the creation of art.
Screw that. I make games because I love making games. To me it's a way to express ideas and feelings and convey them to other minds such that they'll experience some of what was in my head... Like other communication forms, but better. I only make the games that I want to play. I'm sure there are many others out there like me who will enjoy the game; If not, fuck it, at least SOMEONE will enjoy the damn game.
^- This is what happens when you care about advancing the gaming medium itself, and don't really give a fuck about profit.
Stupid archaic money system. Yep, it's required to trade for food so I can stay alive while I work, but it has little or no affect on the games I make.
Don't want a game console that hase to be connected to the internet? Get the "disruptive" device that's shaking up the game industry: Get an OUYA!
Oh, wait... You turn it on, it has to do a mandatory internet system update before it will do anything, and you have to give OUYA your credit card info before you can get any "free" games... They're all free to play by the way. That means: in game purchases.... Which is effectively an always online DRM system.
As a game developer, I just want to sell you a game ONCE, and have you play it at your leasure on whatever device you want it to run on. That's the goal anyway. What's happened is that Game Players and Game Makers want games to run everywhere forever, but the console industry wants to have planned obsolescence and exclusivity to get you to buy the new shiny. The hardware makers leverage vendor lock-in and "walled gardens" to control both the players and developers of games. Console makers are actually harmful to the industry at this pont: Their goals are completely opposite to those of the creators and enoyers of games. Additionally, because big games are expenisive to create we have to dumb them down to the lowest common denominator because of the consoles' under spec'd hardware and glacial rev cycles that completely ignore moore's law.
Looks like the PC is the only market left for no-nonsense game developers who just want to let people play the fucking game whenever, forever.
PS. IMO, "Mobiles" are also "Personal Computers" with a capital P, folks.

I question my local ISP Oligopoly FAR more than I do Google. I know what Google's up to. I give them info I want them to have, and use encryption / relays if I want something to be "private"

Why are we surprised about this and why is this even news worthy?
Well, given the certain steriotypical stigma ususally applied to fans of Apple products, this is quite a surprising turn of events.
every hipster's head just exploded

What was it Metro was similar to, again?
Meh, rhetorical question, but I actually have that link so here you go:
AOL Kids 1996 vs The UI formerly known as Metro
The always-on requirement implies that they won't have that control. When I was younger (I know...) I'd play Quake (1, 2 and 3, usually a CTF mod) at all hours, and between that plus goofing off on USENET, I practically never logged off.

Just food for thought.
Well, it doesn't look much better on the PC front, at least if you go with Valve's Steam Shenanigans.
I mean, imagine if you said something in the heat of battle that got you kicked from the Quake server, and could never play it again...
Yes, but your mid 80's army hummer doesn't run Linux, and has unformfortable teeth...
Is the hood release knob in a car considered a control?
Yes. How else would one operate the ejection seat?!
Their doodles are elegantly done, sometimes.
