yah don say! In regards to the cost of real furniture, I can find good quality real wood made in the USA for the same price as the crap pressboard sold by HomeDepot/Lowes and Walmart. What's that? Yep, there's quite a few places, most are local or within driving distance that make furniture from Pine and such and that's what I buy as it's better quality for the same damn price
The problem with starting AC's at 1 is the number of Off-Topic and Trolls. Keep in mind that/. allows us, when logged in, to get the karma bonus for posting AC. If I can't be bothered to log-in or don't have an account, then there is little reason for me to be granted any benefit such as the +1 Karma Bonus
but the USGS didn't factor in the Methane releases and Methane is a more effective Green House Gas then CO2 ever was. Right now, the biggest contributors of Methane are all the damn cows being fed antibiotics in those massive dairy and feed lots so people can have beef on the Barbie. All you have to do is check out the various orbital colony scenarios and you soon realize that beef isn't that efficient in generating protein for consumption. Goats, sheep, chicken, rabbits and fish are far better at converting feed into protien and the reason I didn't include pork is they're number 2 in methane production.
and since MS released Win7, I can say that almost every one of your points in regards to Apple applies to me on my HP all in One with Win7. In regards to buying something better. It'll happen when something actually better that improves my life come along. Until then I'm happy with Win7 and don't see any reason to upgrade other then those pesky security patches that come out every month.
If I could get a 23 inch display with full 2560x2400 rez, a simple power button and up/down brightness control designed for 6500K color temp, single DVI for less then $1000, I'd buy.
What I get a damn kick out of is everyone things that an IPS display is going to be anymore color accurate (6bit color depth) then what a good CRT gave us (32bit color depth). Personally, the only reason I even need a damn brightness control is that the Gamma Control on my video card doesn't do enough when the display's backlight is to bright. Otherwise I use the tools of the OS/Video Card to adjust the damn color with a Spyder 4 Pro so things at least look as good as possible and for those in the states, check out Newegg. The unit is less then $200, thus a damn good deal if you do any digital work at all.
How about the standard disconnected/unreachable phone number "We're sorry, that number is unavailable. Please check your number and dial again." though I'd change the message to We're Sorry but God is Unavailabe. You can leave a message or Hang Up."
Due to the sometimes crazy way Trademarks are purchased (yes they're purchased based on industries) a company by law protect their trademark or they loose it. Read up on Xerox and Trademark Dilution, it'll tell you a lot about how crazy trademark law can be.
In this case, I have to agree with the others and offer another "Well Done" to the Jack Daniels Lawyers who didn't go overboard on the trademark issue. Hell this is the first I've even heard of a company offering to help someone avoid infringing, which is refreshing instead of annoying everyone by immedaitely going to war.
The first thing is to Blow the dust out before doing anything else then as you've already got Sunk Cost into the server, I'd look at it from the cost perspective of Repair/Replacement before doing anything else. Personally, I suspect that the real problem is that the drives are reaching the replacement point and though they're expensive right now, I'd suggest looking at at least a 1TB model such as the Samsung F3 or WD Black for reliability. On the software front, if you've been using Windows for a while, you're pretty familiar with it, so I'd stick with that instead of trying to learn something new unless your reasoning is to move to something with less admin needs, then a good NAS is viable. This also works if you're looking at saving money on power as a NAS should use far less then the server does.
If you want something new to play with, repair/replace the failing hardware - probably the drives/psu - and install either Free or OpenBSD on the server. Otherwise for reduced admin/learning curves stick with the known Windows as you've already learned most of what's needed.
Didn't know whether or not to mod. So replied instead. You're correct in the fact that corporations are an extension of government in general for without government, corporations could not exist and anyone who argues that government is an extension of corporations is an idiot as the damn corporations can't even come into existence w/o government regulation. If you posit that Corprations Control Government in the United States, then you'd be partially correct as the United States Government is controlled by anyone who has enough money to buy the law.
Not even a bot net wiping a few milllion drives will do it. It'll take a Terminator and Skynet to get through to the damn idiots and at that point it's easier to nuke it from orbit
so you have the trillion pounds of latium to upgrade all of the routers on the internet? Good, then give me 5000 pounds worth so I can finally get the damn router/file/printer server for my household and provide the 100 million pounds for my ISP to get off their asses and upgrade to Docis3 and IPv6 tomorrow or STFU and Get off my lawn
I always thought, that the fairest court of all, would be the one where the "prosecutor" (for lack of better term) would be searching for the "truth", not necessarily going for "conviction". This would remove the adversarial nature of the whole court process, it would be about discovering the "truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth". Define Truth. That is the question. Your truth isn't my truth nor is it God's Truth. This is why our justice system does not concern itself with the "Truth" as everyone thinks. It's Facts that convict, not truth.
Define Truth Your Honor as my truth is not your truth nor is it God's truth. My truth is that I thought the deceased was going to attack with the baseball bat, thus I issued two warnings to back off or I'd shoot. After the second warning, with him continuing to approach, I shot him - aiming for the center of mass as taught, knocking him down and disarming him as he dropped the bat. That is the truth as I see it, thus the shooting was justified as he was properly warned as caught by three security cameras (Walmart, Stater Bros and the Jewlery store). His death was the result of his actions, thus not actionable by the Court nor the Prosecution, who seems to want to waste the states and societies time/money with this case.Yet in the example provided, the prosecution would be pushing for a Murder 1, special circumstances unless the individual had a criminal or drug record. The reason for this would be to show they are "Tough on Crime" yet the citizens do not gain any benefit from such an attitude as it has reached the point that Zero Tollerance is no practiced for just about everything except Lying and Stupidity. If we enforced a Zero Tollererance policy against lying on our damn politicians, maybe we'd be able to clean up our system and actually get worthwhile changes passed through instead of the corporate wellfare/greed and such that the SCOTUS has already agreed that lying is legal. Thus contracts aren't worth the paper their written on nor is that paper any use for ass wiping.
I found it funny you mentioned that several people have replaced older systems with iPads as I've seriously been looking to join that crowd. What's changed is my actual usage patterns over the last couple of years. What I'm doing now is pretty much limited to browsing/email and some word processing along with light gaming and media playback and all of those can be easily filled by one of the Win7 tablets such as the Acer Iconia. What's holding me back though is the lack of storage space on the damn thing (32GB). What I need is a decent solution that offers 2TB of storage and no, a single 2TB external doesn't fill it (single point of failure).
In order to get an Apple to Apple comparison point, they probably look at the cost per thousand. This at least allows them to provide some kind of estimate that compares across multiple brands when they use the same/similar parts
Of course it is by no means an accurate comparison for the reasons you stated - There's a lot of difference between Google and Samsung in quantities purchased though the comparison is far more close between Amazon and Google based on initial quantities manufactured
Everyone is thinking about this problem the wrong way. Instead of using a vacumn, reverse the system and use pressure. It really wouldn't take a lot of pressure - meager +10 pounds to achieve enough economies of scale to move a transport and you have a major advantage in the fact that you don't have to give a damn about vacumn conditions or the possibility of the transport suffering explosive decompression, thus killing people. Another advantage is that the normal Airport Jetways would be sufficient to connect to the transport for passenger/freight movement. Or do like the damn subways and such and simply open the doors and have people move on/off as normal in the station. There's no reason you can't use a small set of motors for moving from the station to the tube where air pressure simply blows the train along.
The first step is actually the easiest if MS would get off their stinking ass and change a single default behavior as the OS Should Never - I say Never Hide any file extensions by default. This is the first setting I change on any window box I touch. It's not much but by god it helps the user detect that something is lying about what it is. Of course the PEBKAC still exists if the user doesn't pay any attention to the extensions - Seems that many americans now have less attention span then a damn Gnat. God help the internet.
why is 3d Printer only useful for test models? If you are using one of the more expensive units that work either in Ceramic or metal, there's no reason you couldn't take it to the next step. In fact, what a 3d printer is good for is producing small parts very precisely and with the right materials, there is absolutely no fucking reason those parts aren't anymore durable then those made by more convential methods (if possible).
can you prototype things using a traditional machine shop as quickly as a 3d printer? The answer is not only no but a resounding Hell No! because of the shear setup time especially if the damn part is very complex. Anyway you look at it, a 3d printer is a Rapid Prototyper.
You're correct about less waste and such but you used the wrong time scale. The reason I say that is look at the complexity of the parts in an iPad. Each part takes time to construct so I'll ask you this set of questions.
Do you step over to the kiln and make the various ceramic parts used to make an iPad?
What about the press used to forge those aluminum cases
How about the amount of time needed to make the glass in the display?
When you actually break it down, there's far more then an hours worth of time invested into the manufacturing of many products today. Only the cheap injection molded stuff can be mass produced in less time. A good example is a custom machine shop. Job cost are based not only upon setup time, that depending on complexity be a couple of days but how long it'll take to complete the production itself. Of course they include things like material cost along with payroll and profit but the key thing is that each and every job takes time as the material can only be worked so fast before you begin damaging it.
