I'm sorry Joe but based upon your Google Health Records, we have to let you go. We simply can't afford the loss of insurance coverage for everyone else in the company. No hard feelings.

That's just a couple of reasons for HIPPA. Do you really want to loose your job because the insurance company can deny you coverage and enforce it through employers? How about having a diabetic child, spouse, autism, other disability. Each and everyone of them could then be listed as a pre-existing medical condition and legally denied coverage for.

I know damn well that here in the states that unless we get a universal medical care (EU/Canada/UK) this is a piss poor idea though now that someone has figured out a loophole to HIPPA it looks like the insurance companies are going to push to kill it as fast as they can.

If applications like Open Office fail to open an Office document even 1% of the time then they're useless if that document is really something you need to open. Gimp still isn't a satisfactory replacement for Photoshop. Sound in flash still doesn't work correctly out of the box, there's no mp3 support by default, nor does Quicktime really work plus there's no decent movie player. Well as a small Business owner, I'm sorry that flash doesn't work on your computer and that you don't have a music or video player app but you happen to be using my equipment to do the job I hired you for and you get the tools I find necessary for you to do that job and if you don't like it, then you are free to find employment elsewhere.

Now as the IT Officer, I use Gentoo on my computers with PXE-boot capabilities because all of my employees are using smart terminals that boot from the network. The advantage is that should a terminal puke/crash/xplode, then all I need to do is switch out the broken unit and have them up and running within minutes and all of this occurs without data loss since everything is on the server.

As part of my decision, my employees use fluxbox as their WM and it is configured to automatically start the only applications that they use, email for those in that position, Open Office for those who need the office suite and a very restrictive set of apps. Hell I even give em Dillo for html file access as it's good enough for that and as far as my customers are concerned, I don't have any problem with Office file formats because by contract, they have to submit in either RTF or Word 97 format though my new contracts are finally moving to a Combination of ODF and RTF as the failsafe formats.

So from the business standpoint, my employees are using the tools I provide at company expense in the manner I deem appropriate instead of doing what ever in hell they want and because of this everyone actually gets enough done cheaply enough that I can continue to pay them for working. Now I'm not a task master or slave driver as I do give them access to a few extras like Pysol and Minesweeper. They offer enough of a mental break while being easy enough to interupt when things get busy.

Note that I live in such a rural area and would be quite willing to spend double the cost of Dialup ($40 a month) if I could get T1 speeds in both directions. Hell they wouldn't even have to provide email or usenet support (Google works well and is free), which certainly drops maintenance costs to a minimum.

Due to this failure, I have decided to begin the transition to a 64bit version of Gentoo on my Desktop (Vista Business64) and laptop (XP-Pro) after full backups of all critical files (thank god for Gmail) on 3/19/2008 because on 3/20/2008 I'm wiping Windows completely and starting the Gentoo Installations. Once those are completed and I have a true VM working, I will start the transition of the other Desktop and Laptop over to the same 64bit Gentoo.

It's nice having 2 laptops that are identical as it means the transition for the second one will be far shorter as I can simply copy over the settings and actual binaries from the other first unit. This means the transition should take less then 10 minutes after the backup has been completed on that unit and after all systems are converted with all backups restored from the external, I can then wipe the external and reformat the external into fat32 partitions for moving data to/from Windows boxes over sneaker net.

Also installing/running something like Gentoo on flash wouldn't be pretty... Sorry to disappoint you but a properly configured Gentoo setup works even better on a flash drive then you'd expect. The main issue is how much disk thrashing goes on when compiling and for that aspect, you simply use a normal HD.

Using Gentoo, what I've found works nicely is a 2GB flash drive that holds only the /boot / partitions as both are rarely written to. What this does is improve the boot times of the system by anywheres from 2-4x making my system boot into run level 5 in less then 15 seconds (cheap stop watch timing). As to Gentoo thrashing a drive when installing/compiling, you don't use a flash drive for that, instead use a standard HD because it offers better performance and longevity. The other reason is that unless you're installing, gentoo doesn't thrash a drive anymore then any other OS except Vista.
