Just out of curiosity, do you have kids? What you are saying is exactly what I hear from people who do not have kids of their own. When I became a parent, my philosophies on just about everything changed and I became very protective of them - this includes when they got online. They are 16 and 18 now and are very well adjusted even if I did monitor their usage and filtered their online experience.
Exactly what I was thinking. I work in the IT department of a hospital and can tell you that I can't even look up my own lab reports or medical records without fear of disciplinary measures as technically it's a HIPAA violation! Even talk casually about a patient in a public place and it's a violation... Sell my records and I'm with the parent, have fun talking with my lawyers!
I run a min of 3.1 miles (a 5k) a day (with the exception of Sunday) at around a 8.5 min pace, on the weekends I usually do 9.3 miles (15k) plus I go to the gym to weight train 3 times a week. I'm thinking of training for a triathlon... Yes, I'm a fit Geek... Wasn't always though - 2 years ago I was pushing 290lbs & now at 40 years old, I weigh 183 with 11.1% body fat. BEST thing about all that exercise is that I can pretty much eat what I want.
Too all those screaming that it's the parent's fault and they don't monitor their kids enough: do you actually HAVE kids? I have 2 boys who are 16 and 18 and although they are old enough for those violent games, I can tell you that it would have been nice when they were 10 or 12 to have the ability to control what they play on the xbox (at the time) as I do with what they watch on TV (vchip). It doesn't matter how good a parent I am or that I wouldn't buy them "Grand Theft Auto" (or whatever), all kids find ways to sneak things into the house and there is no possible way to monitor what they are doing every minute of every day.
I agree... Plus if you (or the wife) is handy with very simple electronics, you can build your own controller for an "arcade" like experience, especially if you use the MAME emulator. That is, if you're looking for arcade type games...

Doesn't the DOT already have a system like this working? I seem to recall many temporary (and some permanent) road signs, indicators, weather stations and even some cameras with a decent size solar panel on it along with a somewhat large box of what I assume is a battery pack. Couldn't this be adapted to wifi repeaters and AP's?
I don't know about any one else here, but I stopped buying music the day I subbed to Sirius radio back in the middle of '03. The ONLY thing that I've bought since then is Rush's new *album* and only because they released it on a 2-lp vinyl set. Between Sirius, my relatively large collection of LP's plus my CD's, I don't want or care for anything else, especially the new crap out there.

I mean, come on people. I have an EZ-Pass for the Thruway in NY. Every time I go through a toll booth, it gets noted (date, time, plaza #, vehicle). Actually, every plaza that I've seen has a camera system in it for license plate recognition. What the hell is the difference here? Also, anyone here use a credit card? How about a store discount card? Hmm? You can't tell me that the store doesn't store that data in a big database somewhere. I think people are getting a bit paranoid here.
When will these asshats realize that if they dropped the high cost of their software, that would go a long way to eliminate piracy? I mean, come on, I never too economics in college, but even *I* realize this.
Give me an f'in break! This ISN'T ABOUT CENSORSHIP!!! This is just a TOOL FOR PARENTS to use to help enforce THEIR sense of morality! Again, it's a tool to help, it's not a tool of government censorship. It's called choice, you can turn it off for christ sake.
Oh come on. If you don't like it, they make it easy to turn this shit off by entering a password you provide.
I have a porn filter installed on all my computers plus I have the bad words filter for Greasemonkey installed too. I also have a ratings block on my DirecTV system and have locked Howard Stearn and other things that I deem as questionable material on my Sirius radio. Does that mean that I don't monitor their activities and habits? No, it doesn't. It just helps makes my job as a father easier, it doesn't eliminate it.
Eh. Semantics is all that is. Don't get me wrong, I hold no love at all for any version of Windows, ESPECIALLY Vista (installed it, ran it for a week and "downgraded" back to XP), but I think that the "cancel or allow" deal is blown far out of proportion. I think that Vista's software incompatibilities is it's greatest downfall.
I just don't get all this crap about the "cancel or allow" bit. Yea, it's kind of a pain in the ass, but my Linux box asks for the SU password all the time to run system commands and do most installs. How is the Windows thing worse?
I just don't understand the whole text messaging thing over a cell phone. I mean, isn't it easier, cheaper and much less complicated to dial the number and talk to the other person?
He used e-mail addresses of people known to have bought antianxiety medication or antidepressants and targeted them with pharmaceutical spam. I work at a hospital and am involved in HIPAA regulation compliance. This one line is proof that some company, hospital, care giver, pharmacy or what ever seriously violated HIPAA regulations by disclosing that information. By law that would make the spammer liable and force him to disclose his information for further prosecution of who ever gave him the list(s) of people on medication.
Exactly why they should have been allowed to fail

Fine, then put the label on movies too. There's no reason video games and cds should be differentiated from any other form of entertainment.
Uh, they do. My DVD player has the capability to block any DVD from being played based upon its rating...

Star Trek New Voyages is an absolutely amazing fan "series" and Star Trek: Of Gods and Men is an amazing mini-series (only part 1 has been released) and that are ONLY available online.

Holy CRAP! Someone out there knows that there is more to New York State than NYC, Long Island and "the rest of the state"! Amazing!
