  1. Re: What if Apple.. on No Love From Ars For Samsung's New Smart Watch · · Score: 0

"They didn't invent the concept of the PC"

Oh quite the opposite. They did exactly that. The Apple ][ was the very first PC. What you think of a PC was scrambled together by IBM with leftovers in a hurry when they saw the wild success of the Apple ][. Apple ][ was released in 1977. 3 years before the IBM PC.

Olivetti beat Apple by 13 years with their Programma 101 in 1964.

", nor did they invent the GUI. "

They did indeed invent the modern, working GUI. The concept they bought from Xerox was not completely developed and lacked many key features. It was not really usable. The first usable GUI computer was indeed the Macintosh in 1984 when all others used CLI.

You're contradicting yourself here. The PARC user interface was invented by Xerox. All Apple did was innovate.

"Truth be told, Apple has never created a completely new and untested product from scratch and been successful with it. "

Wrong. Just plain wrong. Your bias and lack of knowledge is showing.

I hate to bring it to you, but he's right. Every single successful Apple product was an innovation of an already existing product, not an invention. If you're so sure, I'm sure you can name one Apple invention that has been successful.

"Also, marketing. They have really good marketing."

Their marketing budget is tiny compared to MS or Samsung.

He was talking quality, not quantity. It was a compliment.

    Here's a citation:

Israel dismantled 18 settlements in the Sinai Peninsula in 1982, and all 21 in the Gaza Strip and 4 in the West Bank in 2005, but continues to both expand its settlements and settle new areas in the West Bank in spite of the Oslo Accords, which specified in article 31 that neither side would take any step that would change the status of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip pending the outcome of the permanent status negotiations. However, Israeli settlement expansion has continued unabated. The international community considers the settlements in occupied territory to be illegal. Israeli neighborhoods in East Jerusalem and communities in the Golan Heights, areas which have been annexed by Israel, are also considered settlements by the international community, which does not recognise Israel's annexations of these territories. The United Nations has repeatedly upheld the view that Israel's construction of settlements constitutes violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention. The International Court of Justice also says these settlements are illegal, and no foreign government supports Israel's settlements.

Yes, I can give away my music for free. But why the hell should I pay the MAFIAA for that? I think you're the one rationalizing and justifying what they're doing. Try it for yourself: record an album and then try to get CD's replicated and printed by a professional service without paying the MAFIAA. Maybe it's possible in the US, but not here in NL last time I checked. Or sell your album as a small artist and try to get money back from them. It's not possible because as a small artist, you'll never reach the threshold. Even if you're lucky enough to reach the threshold, it's just some change they'll give you. I think you have no idea how much they're screwing us, both artists and consumers.

As I said, it's not that I want to take everything without paying. I do support bands by buying merchandise from them directly because I know my money will go to them, I just refuse to support the MAFIAA.

If I record an album with my own music I should be able to do what I want with it, including giving it away for free, without having to pay the MAFIAA. As long as that's virtually impossible and they continue to screw over not only the consumers, but also the vast majority of bands and artists, they're not getting a dime from me and I'll pirate everything (note: downloading is still legal here in the Netherlands.) I don't pirate because I can't afford to buy it, or because I want things for free. I pirate because it's the right thing to do. The sooner the MAFIAA dies the better, for all of us, consumers and artists.
