Very happy to read this news. Maybe something is going to change after all in.be! Years ago, one of our ministers signed a contract with M$ to get Windows and the other Mico$oft products for a bit less money. In schools, every PC needs to run on Windows. Maybe now the government will see how it can free some money.
The big problem Debian is going to have to cope with is convincing the educational system to start making a switch to Linux.
If you ask me, it's time for a change. We need to put the rotating harddisks in the attic and start using new technology stored in the big vaults of IBM and all the other major companies. I'm getting sick of spinning things to store data. There is enough non-volatile stuff out there with bigger capacities then 320GB that can be IDE/SCSI controlled (if you want to keep on using that). Someone gave a reply about taing backups, well she/he's right. Spinning stuff craps out from time to time (how many times did you have to replace a disk in your server room?). How much cooling would an EMC need with those 320GB? Bet they will spinn a lot faster and thus produce more heat.
As a matter of fact, lot's of cities have liquid gas storage in docks. Transporting the gas isn't a problem using pipes and tankers. The big problem is getting it away from the bottom of the ocean. They should build an underwater heating installation for that I think. I just hope they leave it alone and start searching for energy that is clean.
I don't see this idea realized. Not as long as there is oil in the ground. Too many nations depend on selling the oil. The world will have energy but: the only nations that can invest into this project are the ones with the cash. Other nations will depend on the big nations to sell them the engery. This will be abused a lot more. It's all going to be politics and you know how that is like. Anyway, in a world of peace... this would be a perfect project. (I am not at all a depressed person, maybe a bit too much realistic)
I think it's time we started using highly encrypted messengers and email. We have stuff like GnuPG and PGP, but hardly anyone seems to use it... Why? Because many think it's too much work to do so. Well people, then stop making such a big deal about the government reading your mail and checking you IM logs... Face it, it's the only form of protection we have agains governments that do not respect privacy. And I'm not talking about governments like China here, but the US goverments and the European ones.
Another thing is, here we only speak about governments... everhad the idea that companies may be doing it a bit sooner, the illegal way?
Imagine this: You are working for a major company.
You have an ADSL Internet connection at home and use IM systems and email. I know of one company (in.be) that is doing huge research involving ADSL modems that will give the major company the possibility to 'listen' into your IM and email conversations. And that is just one of the possibilities.
Let's build our own landmine killer. Slashdot could adopt a field with landmines and we could do our own landmine-robot-war. Great opportunity for the Lego Mindstormers and robo-freaks among us:) I'm thinking of some ideas myself, well that is if my manager leaves me alone for a sec.
Here is a good starting page with some methods used for finding mines.
Well, you talk abou birds, but what about rain? Water acts like a lens and would deform the signal if you ask me. I still thing you have a more secure connection is you use fiber. Fiber is harder to tab into. If you use a direct beam from one building to another you can tab into it by just using a few prisms. Another problem I see is that buildings are moving with the wind. So you would loose connection in storms etc. If you ask me you would be better off with a RFC-1149 connection between two buildings;)
Does this mean that they'll start dropping packages of Windows XP in Afganistan now?
That will be a bad idea because if you drop the OS, you should drop the security patches too. And I don't think you can drop stuff for another 5 years...;)
I've seen that the new version of SuSE has some sound editing apps that look powerful to me. Although I never used them and don't know the least about it.;) Anyway, here is the page with the sound stuff. They have these apps:
* gamix * GDAM * ALSA and Midi * RTSynth * kladspa * Linux grooves with jazz and TK-707
I hope there are some apps here that can help your friend.
I hope they ship the processors with water cooling AND a backup cooler. Don't want this baby to get without any fresh air... not if I don't want it to be a smoke generator;)
I even want to make them an account on my machine, but only if i get one on their boxes. (I could get some SETI stuff running there) And maybe even on the boxes of the NSA. I think my demands are fair. No doubt that the NSA is keeping stolen/illegal information about us.
I have that feeling that Winamp is going to stay in alpha for at least at year. The thing I don't like about those none-open-source-windows-ports is that most of the time they come out for Redhat only. Being on a Slackware box that is very unpleasant. That is the reason why I stick with Open Source stuff. Compile the hole thing and it works just fine! I think that the XMMS people are doing a very good job and the program will always be better on the Unix platform than Winamp.
I work in a government building in Brussels,.be I never worked with Wintendo NT and 2k machines before because I use Linux and other *nix systems. Now I have the feeling that one day, I'll have to learn Wintendo too... I guess I can only hope that before I go into M$ deeper, Wintendo will be replaced by Linux or so. But this is utopia in reality: the M$ lincenses cost a lot, but it might cost even more to switch everyone on Linux, just because they'll need training. Sad, but I guess I'm not so far from the truth... at least not with some of the people that work here.
So... do they share the same bed?
I can see it before me:
Bert: Osama, there is a banana in your ear!
Osama: What bert? What did you say?
Bert: There is a banana in your ear...
Osama: I can't hear you Bert, there is a banana in my ear!
I admit, I was wrong... thank you *snif*;)
Well, in fact... I found something quite fun too about geeks inventing cool stuff: take a look here. This is quit a nifty thing, no? Another nice thingy is this: a hovercraft / scateboard, and well not so quit sportive: The motorwheel. I guessgeeks made those too;)
I just hope NASA will broadcast the camstream on a very good line with a very good server...

Good luck guys!
maybe someone can make a Tora Bora cave map for the US forces to us as training.
Did you notice the building Ximian is located in? Looks so .gov to me... I'll better run a 'find / -name "gnome.nsa"' fast

Why is it then that they are still searching for a way to get the gas out of the mass?
This is bad news for Canada... Bush is going to want the land now...
The picture that can be found on the MSNBC site (here) is manipulated if you ask me.
I found a more realistic one here.
Slackware Store

Is there a managers model?
I want to know if my manager is around or not...
It should be able to give electonic shocks too *grinn*
Anyone contacted Stallman yet? ;)

I bet when you go driving in Microsoft City with your GPS you'll get some sign of the evil Nostradamus was talking about. ;)
