My i7-920 quad core with an ATI6950 doesn't break 300watts while playing video games. Closer to 100watts idle. Not sure where you get 450watts short of a dual-GPU OC'd CPU.
Intel's Haswell CPU is claiming to use 1/20th the platform(CPU+Motherboard) power while idle than Ivy Bridge and maintaining the same performance.
Saying a 32MB L3 cache PowerPC CPU is better than Intel CPUs is like saying Intel Xeons are better than ARM A7.. just look at the performance benchmarks!
having 32MB of cache is trading off cost, power, and latency, for better data locality, which is almost completely useless for normal PC workloads.

I may not have had an innate ability to program, but I have always been good at problem solving. I don't need to solve computer problems, I can do that with almost anything. Give me any system, a problem, and some knowledge of how things work in said system, and I'll solve the problem.
Around here, there are HUGE liquid storage natural gas tanks that hold weeks to months of fuel. The distribution system just works based on the naturally high pressure of the gas, no pumping involved. Natural gas still works, even with weeks of power outages.

now, as we well know, power consumption is a square law of the clock rate. so in a rough comparison, in the same geometry (e.g. 45nm), that 1.6ghz CPU is going to be roughly TEN times more power consumption than that dual-core ARM Cortex A9. e.g. that 500mhz dual-core Cortex A9 is going to be about 0.5 watts (roughly true) and the 1.6ghz Intel Atom is going to be about 5 watts (roughly true).
Don't worry, the new Atom CPU coming out next year is 750mw(Max draw, including 3D graphics) and about 20%-100% faster than current ARM CPUs, and only a 20mw idle.
That's on a 22nm. 14nm will be coming out the year after. Enjoy.
Forgot to add. Intel's new research into low power usage for phones/tablets has also leaked into their desktop chips. Intel is claiming about a 20x reduction in average office workload power draw. Over a magnitude power savings in one generation while keeping the same performance.
As it turns out, it's much easier for software to do that job (because the programmer knows when they are needed, instead of having the CPU check every single instruction for these issues), and it makes the CPU much more efficient.
You want programmers to deal with TLB flushes and cache flushes and other low level things that require knowing how the CPU arch works? You must know a lot of good programmers, because I bet 90% of "programmers" think computers are magic.
I'm not sure I want a program to have the ability to flush caches to adversely affect the rest of the system. Not every instruction needs to be checked, only memory related instructions.
I would like to see a discussion about the pro-and-cons of what you said.
If you remove "The single-cycle rule", then there is no difference between RISC and CISC. Single cycle is the corner stone of the difference between the two.
MKV is a generic container format that was designed to be codec neutral. Why not start complaining about how HTTP should be the only application layer protocol to use TCP because it's the most popular.
the difference between 40fps and 20fps at 1080p for medium quality in a modern game... on a netbook. Intel IGP is notm eant for games, but it can run them with "meh" quality, but really really lower power usage.
Last I checked, Intel's IGP got about 1/2 the FPS for 1/3 the TDP. I'm not sure about this Haswell version or what AMD will have to compete with Haswell.

That's why you use VMs and never turn the machines off. Just live migrate the server around.

Being able to atomic modify a memory location allows x86 to have much faster/cheaper multi-thread locking. Sounds like a feature to me.

At some point as we lose more money, it becomes less valuable, and it will again become cheaper to create manufacturing jobs here in the USA.

96kb vorbis is about as good as 192kb MP3. I don't think it would be hard to break past MP3 in quality.
Valve is working with Intel to better Intel's drivers for the Linux Steam release. We should be seeing improvements over the next 6month-1year.
The core i5-460m is a non-IvyBridge, which is about twice as fast as yours, and the Haswell version is faster than IB's IGP.
