Thanks! I'm not *quite* Libertarian: I love the fact that Livertarians are intelectually consistant. Sometimes, In my eyes, doing the "right thing" is not always practical - and in those instances I'm a bit more pragmatic that I'd like to admit.
1) More bang for the buck - $100 goes further in Sudan than it does in Appalachia.
2) Need. People in Sudan face war, Aids, typhoid, and rape. Appalachians are born into the easiet country in the world to live, so I tend to take a dim view of people that don't seize the oppertunity. 80% of world would switch places with the Appalachians and count themselves blessed.
Thanks for trying to keep your rage under control - you almost made it. You'll do better next time.
I use the term out of wed-lock to avoid the term "bastard" as I feel a lot of empathy for the children of such situations and a lot of anger for the idiots that spawned them. The children don't deserve to be labeled - their parents do.
In Europe, it's considered passe to get married, but in all but name they are - they raise their children together, spend their lives together. Here in the states it's different - unmarried people usually equates to low-class , non educated people who think only in the short-term.
I have hiked through the Appalachian mountains, but no, I don't live there. I've seen more of the world just about anybody - I speak two languages fluently and a bunch of others at a tourist level. Believe me when I say that the American unmarried parents are nothing like their European counterparts.
It must be hard to be you;
Ha that's funny: I'm rich, I'm ethical, hard working, hard playing and have a lot of true friends. Life is good for me - I've earned it.
Me too. I'd much rather drink and fuck than build a levy
Your choice, just don't expect me to help you when the shit hits the fan.
Thanks for the reasoned reply and for not doing a typical Ad Hominum attack...
Your rage slipped in the end, but I could tell you're trying.
I *was* being bombastic, and perhaps I was troling - BUT I did have a point behind my message.
I'm a bit tired of the race card being played - NO has had Black politicians in power for the last 30 years, so race is not an issue.
It's cluture - from here NO looks like culture of corruption, greed and partying; and when that culture cries out, those cries will justly/unjustly fall on deaf ears.
Here's my reasoning in a nutshell: Why would I give $100 to NO when I *think* that it will be stolen, squandered and misspent, when I can give $100 to the Tsunami victims and *know* it will be put to good use.
I know you don't like what I have to say, but at least you know why I, and people like me, aren't so hot about NO.
You may have some predetermined notions about me, but you're probably wrong. But anyways, I'm just saying what's on my mind rather than not confront a difficult discusion.
why the apathy shown towards us in our time of need...
Here's my reason for my apathy.
Jelousy.
Simple jelousy.
I'm a hard worker: I work hard so my kids have a bright future, and I hardly ever get to "play."
New Orlease epitimises the "feel-good" short-term fun seeking person that's I've alway been jelous of in a way: They got to drink, screw and be merry.
I've never done these things to such a degree.
The old puritin in by blood is jelous.
Add to the fact that 10% of my income goes to people that behave like this 24 hour a day and that adds another layer or resentment. I get to pay for other people to have a good time.
You asked for why the apathy.. there are my honest reasons.
The little thug Cantu isn't a innocent - the little car-theif confessed to shooting somebody in a pool hall. That somebody turned out to be a cop - and Cantu probably got a bit more attention after that.
Huh? Ever done a multi-million dollar enterprise software implementation? Some IT departments have dedicated finance people.
Yes - but it's nothing compared to construction. I've seen schedule's of values in construction that will make you head swim - with line items from gravel import for a one lot to office supplies for the month of May. Construction typically has a 4% margin - so that's why they go nuts.
The Project Management Body of Knowledge is where you should start if you are serious about PM. You can buy it online from Amazon, et al.
That's good idea - there's a lot to learn from the PMBOK.
The PMBOK is geared to the construction field, so there's a lot of stuff there that us IT people don't need.
For example: In construction you are usually *very* cost oriented while in IT you hardly ever do cost management.
Another: A a big problem in IT is that you can fake progress and not be any further to the goal - in construction, laying down 50 feet of curb is hard to fake.
It seems like most of the advances that Firefox made vs. IE have now been neutralized [snip] What new ideas/innovations are the Firefox team making these days to stand out in the browser wars?
Security.
Internet Explorer still is an ActiveX exploit away from wiping you files.
When you have a WebDAV server setup and have Sunbird/Mozilla Calander setup - it will delete calendars that have zero items. Delete the last item in your calendar, and POOF, you have a zero byte.ics file. Once you begin to use your calendar, this problem goes away. But when you're just testing things it looks like a show stopper.
if you've a crew of MCSEs on staff who've never touched Linux, it's going to be more expensive and a bigger hastle go the OSS route.
MS's newest/latest/greatest has a large learning curve as well. You old MCSE who knows Windows Domains will have just as much trouble learning Active Directory as he would have learning Samba 3.
I've trained MCSEs in open source technology - about 50% do just fine. The otheres were paper MCSEs and sucked at Windows too.
I like your sig. Are you LP?

I give to third-world causes for several reasons:
1) More bang for the buck - $100 goes further in Sudan than it does in Appalachia.
2) Need. People in Sudan face war, Aids, typhoid, and rape. Appalachians are born into the easiet country in the world to live, so I tend to take a dim view of people that don't seize the oppertunity. 80% of world would switch places with the Appalachians and count themselves blessed.

Perhaps their priorities are a bit backward?
Nothing new...
New Orleans spent more effort at having fun they did at building levies.
Learn to act civilised and we'll talk.
I would mod this down if I had points. You're just as bad as Pat Robertson.
I'm stil correct, even if my observations are unpleasent.
Sometimes the truth is painfull - New Orleans was a great party town, but not a great civilized city.
Oh, and your Ad Hominum attack is considered childish by a lot of people. It's considered childish name calling. But whatever....
Perhaps their priorities are a bit backward?
...New Orleans was a party town and they paid the price.
New Orleans has alwas had bad priorities...
They'd rather party and have a good time than build decent levies.
They'd rather collect welfare than get out and work.
They'd rather have children out of wedlock, than get merried.
Let's hope the New-New Orleans gets some decent priorites.
What do the North American Indians celebrate?
Thanksgiving. But they drink their Wild-Turkey.
(one ticket to hell, window seat please)
Just make sure to kill off a few innocents
The little thug Cantu isn't a innocent - the little car-theif confessed to shooting somebody in a pool hall. That somebody turned out to be a cop - and Cantu probably got a bit more attention after that.
Payback's a bitch.
Well said!
How many ages hence
Shall this our lofty scene be acted over
In states unborn and accents yet unknown!

But to the average american, this means nothing.
Give the average American some credit.... most of us support NASA. We've supported everything for Apollo, Voyager, Skylab, ISS and Hubble.
The questions that really needs to be asked is... why Europe is slacking off in space exploration. The *Chinese* are doing better for god's sake.

An OS with case statement? No fucking way.... it was all GOSUB.
OK? CLOAD "MYOS.BAS"
OK? RUN
while all the retards start and grow multi-billion dollar companies.
When I was fifteen, and stupid, I started my booming IT company.
I couldn't have done it now that I'm twice as old - I'd be too scared, I now know how hard it is.
Sometimes, It's easier to accomplish something when you don't know about all the hard things that are going to be in your way.
Ok..... I'll put away the bold pen....

I just had in mind this specific right-wing group on campus who is always spouting gloom and doom about the decline of society
;)
Ugh! Sorry if a few jerks make all of us right-wingers look evil!
We're really only 50% evil
I always like to ask right-wingers ranting about games and sex causing social decline
Please - It's not just the right - it's also the *left* that rant about sex and violence.
The "Parental Advisory" on CD were brought to you by the *left* as was the v-chip.
When I'm around my fellow right-wingers, I remind them that free-speach is a right, and should not be abridged.
I invite you to do the same for your left-wing friends.
I was vacationing there last December and I was totally suprised at the presence of military guys in the airports and streets with assult rifles.
This is normal....
In North America, we've been *really* lucky/fortunate. In Europe, fully armed guard are commonplace and it's been that way forever.
The guards in the Vienna airport had grandes. The Suiss border guards had fully-tracked tanks.
It made me realise how lucky we have it.
Perhaps then you will see why the rest of the world fears the USA.
It the USA is so evil, why do Canada and Mexico have basically no border protections in place?
As far as I know, Canada's protection is a spray painted line, and Mexico sometime mounds up a few rock now an then.

Already this malloc change has found a 10 year old bug in X which was apparently very difficult to find otherwise.
;)
Always do this! Compile your app on the weirdest platform you can find - it's amazing the amount of bugs you can find!
I use to compile the core of our flagship Windows app on an old Sparc OpenBSD box now and then. The bug-catching was tremendous.
Now that our flagship software runs on *NIX, Windows now the orphan test bed
