    Jesus, how much pot did he need? To be viewable from 450 miles away, the put feild must of been a *bit* more than just for his own consumption. When you know that each meter is one pixel, and it takes more that a few pixels to determine that it's indeed marijuana, then there must of been at least 10 square meteres of the stuff - and thats only ten pixels. Sounds like he was trying to pay off the bank loan for the new tractor with the proceeds.

    Microsoft has also said at each release of Windows, that "this one is reeeeaaaaally stable now." I woulden't place too much faith in what they say, after all they are a corporate criminal in the eyes of the US justice system.

    Imagine this technology combined with a car computer - as you are driving, the dashboard could tell you the speed limit without a big ugly sign being at the side of the road. You car could tell you where is ok to park, and when it's illegal without painting the curb all sorts of ugly colors.

    I then proceeded straight to Circuit City to buy a real DVD player.

    I went the other direction - I got rid of my crappy NTSC TV and replaced it with a 21" computer monitor. DVD's look a lot better and my Sega Dreamcast games that support the VGA output box look wonderfull. I watch TV broadcasts using a TV PCI card. (In MS Windows, unfortunatly

    I'd love to hook up my computer to a good LCD projection system - but that a bit expensive.

    Keep in mind that a lot of HDTV tuners have a VGA output as well.

    Er.. I woulden't be bragging. The Psion Wavefinder was such a flop, it caused them to have to abandon development of their new PDAs due to the massive loss of capitol incurred.

    BTW - I'm enjoying an unlimited highspeed internet connection for $45 (27 Pounds) a month, Hows BT doing with yours. (duck)

    Iridium is not dead. The DOD has a $70 million contract with the small Canadian firm that purchased the scraps after their bankrupcy. Buy a $1000 Motorola 9505 phone and each minute is now $1.50 form anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world. It use to cost ~$10 a minute. The DOD contract let them make a profit - so they sould be around for a while.

    I use mine in Europe and Japan - it's cheaper than GSM roaming, and the incomming caller pays the $1.50, not me. It's also great for backbacking - I can pretend that I'm still at the server farm on Fridays.

    RAID using rsync from my other computers, (or just drag-and-drop to the Samba server from the Win2K box).

    Cygwin has RSync for Windows. Works really well.

    Thats all you're missing! Really. It's a case of 'If I can do it, I know you can do it just as well'. Thinks that have helped me:

    Emulate normall business practices:
    Get letterhead and business cards.
    Get a buiness cell phone.
    Get a laptop.
    Get a domain name.
    PDA for appointments and contacts.
    Account software (roll your own or Quickbooks)

    Emulate a 'office-type' person:
    Dress from the JcPenny business catalog.
    Go to the barbershop every three weeks.
    Run the car though the car wash now and then.
    Shower every morning.
    Replace the Casio watch with a Seiko.

    Be yourself, but nicer:
    Don't gossip too much.
    Rememeber peoples names.
    Learn a few jokes.
    Say hello to everybody.
    Laguh easily and smile.

    Impress your customers:
    Bring a cool gaget into work to show off.
    Help people with their cell phones.
    Deploy cool stuff (811 wireless)

    Get some energy:
    Exercise.
    Get checked for depression.
    Eat good foods.

    Think long term:
    Be poor for a while.
    Learn stuff.
    Don't buy too many toys that take up your time without learing somthig new.

    As far as connections: I can litterally trace all of my clients to one customer - my good work and fair rates have been all the advertisement I've needed. You only need one connection - perhaps a friend doesen't know you would like to do a deiferent kind of work and just needs to be reminded.

    This is not the best example, 'cause $99 is cheep for an LCD screen, but heres a thought. YOU ARE ALL WASTING YOUR TIME.

    Heare me out - I'm not trying to flame.

    The same person that has the skills to flash a operating system kernel onto a CF card, boot from it in single user mode, reset the password, reboot and the get the system to load a new kernal from an NFS mount point is worth at least $60 per hour. Spend two hours doing this and you've broken even and haven't leaned much.

    I'm absolutly depressed to think that there are clever people that muck around all day, pissing around with cruddy hardware, when they could be out makeing a bunch of money, making people lives easier, meeting people and have just as much fun as before. If you can do this - replacing NT servers with SAMBA servers is a peice of cake, OpenBSD fire walls are simple and PostgreSQL is a toy.

    I have a very good friend who, like a lot of people here, is very smart and can do all sorts of wacky stuff - unfortunalty he isen't working at a decent job and is suffering for it.

    If you can do this hack and don't have a decent paying job that you love to do - do the hack, have fun. Then, bath and put on some decent clothing, go forth and conquer.

    Well, you and I agree on one thing at least. It was a twofold mistake to give money to most undeveloped nations, we should have spent the money on their education; and the current debt load is crippeling their stuggeling economies and making them follow the odd (if not bad) policies of the IMF.

    So why is it bad to point out errors?

    Beacuese it's not constructive if you don't follow it with possible solutions. It's not helpfull. Infact, Chomsky has probably done more harm to the cause of anti-walmart-nike-mcdonalds-globalisation than anybody - he makes the perfect Goldstein for todays Big Brother. I respet people like Ralph Nader, who can not only diagnose, but make reasonable prescriptions. I don't agree with Mr. Nader half the time, but he'd be welcome in my house anytime.

    I was useing small words for you. See my previsous note on why. Representational governemt seems to work well - all the prosporous, civil and pleasent countries seem to have one. Maby there's a better form of governemnt out there, but statistically, it's the best there is for now.

    PR companies only hold sway with the stupid and greedy. I don't really care for either group - so if a PR company can convince a stuipd and/or gready person to part with their money then more power to them. Presidents are elected by the people, serve their time, and return to the people from whence they came. They are not that remarkable in the scheme of things. Only little people are impressed by the shiny polish that their campaign staff smears on them.

    Whats wrong with the Kenyans. Is knowlege too difficult for them? I think not. Kenya just needs some help with their democracy and education. America bashing, as popular as it is with people with too much time on their hands, won't kelp Kenya one bit.

    It's not his job to offer solutions.
    Chompsky doesen't offer solutions because 1) I suspect that he doesent have any. 2) offering solutions would take time away from blaming America for everybody elese problems.

    If everybody is so pissed off at America, then explain why everybody wants to immigrate here. Emplain why, as an American, people treat very kindly when I travel aborad. They may not treat you well when you travel - but I digress.

    On some things yes. His point of view worth cosidering, espically his thoughs on linguistics, but I place Chomsky with the likes of Ann Ryand and Jesus Christ. Their viewpoints are educated and interesting, but their followers tend not be able to think for themselves. I suspect that Chomskys views would change if he traveled more and wasen't so Ameri-centric. As much as I like America, our influance isen't great enough to make the world a paradise or a hell. To think so is arrogent on Chomsky's part, and demeans the progress third world countries have made for themselves.

    I never understood people who speed 20 MPH over on the freeway - you only save 25% of your time. Instead speed 20 MPH in a school zone - you save 50% of your time, and may get a free lube job on the underside of your car if you hit a fat kid.

    You don't need to read the GPL, or even agree to it, if you are just using GPL software, it's only when you copy software do you need a licence from the original copyright owner.

    It's not a idea that needs to be 'believed' - the evidence is overwhelming. If you discount Russia, there hasent been an impeialist power in twenty years. If any country sucks, they have only themselves to blame. Japan was NUKED back to the stone age - in two generations they are back on top. What the hell is keeping (choosing a random counrty) Kenya from making the same strides? I'll let you in on a secret: It's Not the GM/Microsoft/GOP/Alien conspiricy.

    Thankfully there are only a few countires that suck. Some have harder lives that we do, but they are improving. Hell - your average person in the world, unless they give themselves AIDS, has a longer life expectancy than a 1700's head of state.

    We humans have made a lot of progress in the last 100 years - just beacuse some people are a bit behind the curve dosen't meen that there some vast global conspiricy going on to keep people opressed.

    Want a good life for masses? Stop picking on people who are sucessfull and start emulating any good ideas they might have. Mr.Chompsky is a smart man, but did you ever notice that all he does is point out problems. He hardly ever offers any solutions. I wish he did, maby he have a good idea. Instead, he's the same broken record, playing the "Blame America First" anthem over and over. It's a shame, A good mind is a terrible thing to waste.

    Nope. The reason that most poor nations are poor is that other nations wants them to be poor.

    For every poor country that's opressed due to imperialists, there are ten that are opressing themselves better that any outside country could dream of.

    Same with indivisual humans: most people find that their own worst enemy, the enemy that makes their lives miserable, is themselves.

    Whats wrong with keeping the poor nations in control? The reason that most poor nations are poor is that they spend more time killing each other in their tribal-war-of-the-week than making stuff.

    It just might not be your fault! Get a blood workup done - there's a 10% chance your thyroid gland is not working up to snuff. If you are of European decent, get checked ASAP. It seems that a low thyroid was a good survival trait in the fridgid north, but in modern life it sucks.

    Maybe NT really was a mistake. Maybe Microsoft would be even richer if they had just kept evolving Win9x and let it accrete more features.

    In a way, NT was a mistake. In the time spent from Windows 98 to Windows XP - Microsoft has lost ground to KDE. I the time that Microsoft has spent removing the paperclip and playskooling the desktop, KDE had gone from nothing to something cool.
