He's the fundamental difference: on a console you put in the CD which is needed to authenticate that you have the disk, but it doesn't actually update the firmware of your system. When you eject the disk, the system is exactly the same as it was before.

That was true; however today's console get "forced" updates: when you put a game disc in them, if you don't have the good firmware version, either you update or can't play the game.
What does firmware update does ? Of course they fix occasional bugs and bring "useful features", but most of the time it's only a pain for people with custom firmwares.

I'm failing to see why this is a big deal. Software is in place to check for a piece of third party code intercepting your encryption key... It successfully detects GRUB as such software, and stops. So what?

When you don't have the choice to disable this "option", it IS a big deal.

The attack on the twilight hack was probably brought forth by the new found popularity for the Homebrew Channel, which brings homebrew software to the Wii using masses (Similar to PSP Custom Firmwares or Jail Broke iPhones). If that was the case, the update would have done something to the homebrew channel, but when the update installed it only removed the twilight hack that was hanging here, leaving the homebrew channel alone...

But, it's not really an issue; a lot of internet/IP related laws passed recently are impossible to enforce, so my guess is that this won't work too well either (as you said, a big part of the population don't care/understand, and the other part isn't likely to participate). The day our government get some technical advice before making some weird laws isn't today.

Well, there is a lot of people who want a computer just for internet access and some small desktop apps; for those people having linux or windows don't mean anything. Now, if vendors were able to give the linux option more easily (having hardware support is better from the customer point of view...), the win-linux difference will appear as the form of a better price. When people who want a computer that "just work" can get one that "just work" without having to read installation instruction, play with settings, and such things, the linux desktop will become a viable option.
