I can't say this without being a huge asshole but i'll try.
You'll have to try harder.
It just strikes me as being totally arrogant to say "what you gave me for free isn't good enough for me, go back make it so that I am happy and don't expect me to lift a finger or spend a dime either."
We're not. We're saying, "This isn't good enough, so I'm not gonna use." That's all. If the OO folks want us to use OO then they, like you, will have to try harder. If not, so be it.
It just strikes me as totally arrogant to think that the user's expections are irrelevent.
By all means the OO folks should code to whatever standard they want. They're doing it because they want to. Scratching that itch. Not because anyone is paying them for a product. But if you are writing something for yourself, don't be surprised if nobody else wants it.
Apple's success is based on Apple controlling all aspects of its business. Can you imagine a company that doesn't allow clones of its computers allowing people to judge their newest/coolest gadget by the quality of signal that someone gets from some anonymous tower?!?
Just like Apple not supporting that internet thingy! Imagine having your customers judge their new computer based on the crappy service they get from Comcast.
Or like how you can't use third party software on your Macs. Imagine the user experience being ruined by some random app causing kernal panics!
Apple's release notes say to disconnect firewire drives prior to installing.
From the notes:
If you have a third-party FireWire hard drive connected, turn it off and disconnect it before installing this update. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
This shows a deep lack of understanding about what is being searched for.
The pattern being looked for is a pattern that cannot arise via natural processes.
DNA can be explained as a result of natural processes. Note that I said CAN. It is only those processes for which a natural process can not be provided for which intelligence can be inferred.
Consider the discovery of pulsars. They caused quite a stir at the time. But since a natural process was discovered that could explain then, the original thoughts that they might be evidence of intelligent life was quickly discarded.
It is the same with life. At first it was believed to be miraculous, the result of a special creation. But as we learned more about how life actually works, we come to see that it can be explained as the result of natural processes. And thus not evidence of intelligent design.
Of course, since intelligent life is a consequence of physical laws, anything life does can be consdered a natural process...
First, not everything on the radio is music. There are a number of NPR shows that are on while I'm at work that would enjoy listening to.
And as is usually menitoned whenever someone reviews this thing, some people enjoy listening to Howard Stern, but can't for various reasons. Now they can, at least for a year or so.
And there is plenty more talk of varying quality radio out there.
And where I live there is a space music show called Echoes. Runs between 10 pm and midnight. More often then not I'm doing something else. Now I can record it, load my iPod, and listen at work.
I have a similar if not the same problem. I has to do with ad placement. When the ads are at the top of the page it renders fine. When the ads are on the right side the page is scrunched. That is, the story headings are pushed into the left sidebar.
The sidebars are always visible. Refreshing can change the ad placement, and thus correct the problem.
I suppose an ad blocker might make the issue go away, but most of the users the grandparent is referring to won't bother or know how to install to install one.
Folks like me, eh? I think it's folks like you who are to blame, because you seem to think the only valid vote is one cast for one of the two major parties.
Wow, you assume quite a bit there sparky. Just what are my "one or two major issues"? Who did I vote for in the last election? What makes you think I'm a democrat or support them?
I've voted for third party candidates (and fourth party and fifth party...) and will do so again. But only when I think it will make a real difference. And I've voted for democrats and republicans, when I think they are the best choice.
But I try never to waste my vote.
There is a pragmatic aspect to voting, and while it is nice to thump your chest and spout high sounding priciples, someitmes you do have to select the lesser of two evils. Because there is a real world out there, and who gets elected makes a real difference.
I think Nader is a pompous ass. And I think a vote for Nader is a wasted vote. Why? Because there is no way in hell Nader would have made a good president. Not then. Not now. Not ever.
Secondly, there is no way that Nader could win. So what did a vote for Nader accomplish? A win for Bush. Plain and simple, that's it. It did nothing to move us away from a two party system. And when Bush's thugs trample all over you civil liberties nobody's gonna give a shit about your protest vote.
Life isn't clear cut. There are no candidates that I agree with on everything. Thus I make my voting decisons based on both who best supports what is important to me and who has a realistic chance of being able to do so (that is, win the election).
... When new to OS X, you don't know that there's a find command...
Clue #1, it is called the Finder!:-)
A quick trip to the Help menu, and typing in "search" led very quickly to info about the find command.
And it is pretty obvious where to find help, via the Help menu in the Finder.
And while in help I entered the search terms "command line", "shell", "bash", "tcsh", "term", "bsd", "unix" all of which led me to info about the program "Terminal". Many of which had an option to open Terminal.
So now I know how to search and that a program called Terminal looks light it will do what I need. So I use the find command to find terminal. And there it is.
The survey said 92% of web searchers. Not 92% of the survey population.
SteveM
But that is the open source "business" plan.
How much have you paid for your copy of Linux?
How much direct profit has Linus made from Linux?
And yet Linux sems to cater to a lot of people's needs.

I know your post is flamebait but ...
Sorry, but - why the heck should the majority of OOo developers care even one bit what the mac users want?
They shouldn't. That's my point. They should code whatever they want for themselves. End of story.
But then they shouldn't be surprised if the users, in this case OS X users, don't flock to their product.
You can't completely ignore the user's expectations and wants and then complain when the same users reject your product.
The OO folks have decided that they do not want me, as an OS X user, to be an OO user. Fine. I won't be.

This is from the September 13th APOD. Not the December 5th APOD.
Thanks for playing.

When Letterman switched networks the NBC tried to prevent him from using top ten lists.
They were not successful.

91.5 WRPI plays a lot of eclectic and oftentimes strange music, and they aren't corporate slaves.
Wow, that takes me back and makes me smile.
Long ago and far away I used to play strange music on WRPI.

Because this is a replacement position for an already existing project team.

They understood all too well that the classic MacOS ... was not designed with networking and multitasking in mind.
We had our Mac Plus systems networked, along with a LaserWriter, in 1988 via AppleTalk.

I went into Photoshop and cropped a portrait image progressively smaller. Every icon looked just fine.
I'm quite happy that all my portrait images have proper sized thumbnails!

So I can run 32bit compile-as-you-go-and-fight-dependencies Linux, or 64bit it-just-works OSX?
Only if you are running OSX 10.4 Tiger. Which isn't due for general release until next year.
SteveM
Key qualifier: near future
OS X Tiger will be 64 bit, but that isn't scheduled for release until 02005 either.

Yeah, I had to use google to find the Terminal app in OS X.
Couldn't you just have used the OS X find command? Isn't Google a bit of overkill for this?
