Apple Releases 10.3.5
derphilipp writes "Apple just released 10.3.5 via software update.
On the list of changes were - among others - new graphic card drivers, support for reading filesystems and a better samba support. Its size is 43 MB and its available via softwareupdate. Happy updating." Update: 08/09 22:46 GMT by T : EverLurking writes to note that Apple has also released the 5.3MB "'Security Update 2004-08-09' for OS 10.3.4 (along with OS Update 10.3.5) via software update that patches the security hole in the libpng libraries that could crash applications opening up malformed PNG images."
I think most people will find this update list a bit more informative than the story submitter gave:
- Improved support for NTFS formatted volumes
- Improved reliability for user logins and mounting of home directories in a networked environment
- Updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers
- Improved Bluetooth compatibility for Apple Wireless Keyboard/Mouse and Bluetooth phones
- Additional FireWire and USB device compatibility
- Improved font management
- Updated Mail and Image Capture applications
- Improved compatibility for third party applications
- Previous standalone security updates

End of Line.
Enhancements
These are some of the enhancements included with the Mac OS X 10.3.5 Update.
Bluetooth enhancements
Bluetooth FIle Exchange now works better with Bluetooth-capable Hewlett-Packard printers.
Resolves an issue in which an application that's performing an asynchronous Bluetooth operation could quit unexpectedly, if the computer went to sleep before the data transfer was complete and the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" preference setting was disabled.
Addresses an issue in which Bluetooth File Exchange could unexpectedly quit if you tried to copy several files but one or more of them already existed at the target location.
Networking, Internet enhancements
If you had difficulties connecting to the Internet with a Comcast cable modem and your account uses DHCP configuration (as opposed to PPPoE), then this update can help you connect more easily. If it doesn't, contact Comcast for further assistance. (An example of this issue would be that your computer can't get an IP address when connected to the cable modem, and your Network preferences are set to configure via DHCP.)
Improves the way Safari handles certain kinds of GIFs, including ones that could cause Safari to quit unexpectedly. Reintroduces shorter server pathnames; the overall limit remains 89 characters, but now only 24 characters (instead of 39 with Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.3.4) are reserved for the beginning of the pathname. More...
Other enhancements
Image Capture can now import MPEG-4 movies (.MP4) from compatible digital cameras.
Resolves a potential data loss issue after renaming a Mail mailbox file.
Addresses an issue for Mac OS X 10.3.4 in which Installer might unexpectedly quit when installing software that has a Japanese name.
Corrects an issue in which analog speakers connected to a PowerBook or iBook during sleep sometimes didn't produce sound after waking the computer.
Resolves an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.4 in which the internal microphones of some iBook (Dual USB) computers would not be available to applications or Sound preferences.
Allows the "Attach" button of Eudora version 6.0 and 6.0.1 to work as expected.
Improves support for NTFS-formatted volumes.
Updates the libpng (Portable Network Graphics) component.
Includes recent Security Updates.
Okay. Let's see...
Microsoft releases a patch for Windows that fixes bugs. The patch is 250 meg.
The next day, Apple releases an update for OSX that adds new features. The update is 43 meg.
Compare and contrast.

Apple also released a Security Update fixing the libpng problem.
So far I have not found anything about it on Apple's site, but chances are you will see that as well when you run Software Update.
Running 10.3.5 now, and no problems so far.

Just installed this on my G3 iBook, seems to have all gone okay.
No major speed increases it seems, but I swear the dock seems a bit more responsive then it did before. This is with 384 MB RAM, by the way.
Before the dock would stutter when I opened up my normal amount of apps on boot (6, 7), but now it responds smoothly when I roll my mouse over it (magnification on) and the icons are bouncing.
I just updated my G4 733 (nvidia and ati cards, 1.12gb ram, dual hard drives, dual monitors) and have no problems so far.
Maybe I'm just insane, but 10.3.5 has finally fixed the problem where the third or fourth 3D app launched would have seriously negative performance. It also nudges up the 3D performance in general, instead of getting 70FPS in BZFlag I now get 85.
You rock apple.

It seems iSync still doesn't recognize my Nokia 7610. I was hoping 10.3.5 would fix that.
I'm posting this from my updated Powerbook G4, so I assume it went OK and didn't break anything. I can't vouch for any spectacular performance boosts or anything, but I'm gonna throw everything I have at it right now and see if anything's broken. Hopefully it won't, like, explode or anything.
Just installed it. Automatically changed my monitor's resolution from 1280 x 1024 to 1600 x 1200! I decided to trust it.
Just installed it on my iMac DV+ 450 and saw some changes so far. First, Darwin was upgraded to version 7.5.0. Then, if you go to the system preferences, a new row (Other) is added with an icon labelled "Hardware". For me, it shows infos about the CPU and let me choose if I want to desactivate the L2 cache (combobox with "512KB" or "None"). Safari was upgraded too, now running as 1.2.3 (v125.9). That's about it for now...
Installed 10.3.5 on both a PowerBook G4 and 1.8GHz G5 at work. No problems with the install at all -- everything went smoothly. There is a slightly better video response from both machines with the update. On the single G5 processor, Genie effects appear to be incredibly smooth, whereas before they were somewhat choppy. Using Desktop Manager, transitions between virtual desktops was also incredibly smooth. In short, during my brief use, no problems were encountered.

My update was only 22.9 MB. Seems odd. I did have separate security update that was something like 5 MB.
my update pane says 22.9mb, not the 43 (+5.3 for the security update)
... support for reading filesystems
Thank goodness. I've been having a hell of a time with these write-only filesystems.
Dude I'd post the info but its not on apples site yet even if it is
in software update. Basically its:
New stuff
Better stuff

Of course the 10.3.5 updater did fix the nasty kernel panic issues I've been having with 3 identical Maxtor 160GB firewire external drives. Before, trying to use more than one at a time would cause a kernel panic on boot-up.
After running the update all 3 drives can now be used on boot-up, turned on and off while the computer is on and everything.
Ah. Back to hot swapping.

Subject line says it all. Why isn't this phone yet supported on bluetooth?
Well I updated, hopefully this will fix the problems I had after 3.4, I always thought of going back to 3.3 but was always just to lazy. Anyway 3.5 seems to be running well, I noticed it seems to take more RAM on launch. not a big deal I still have a good couple hundred of megs left, but Activity monitor shows more than a quarter on start up of my memory is being used, before it looked like an exact quarter. Strange. I'm glad they fixed the problem with Safari it crashed a bit much for my taste a while ago. Haven't had the problem recently though. Don't think it broke anything yet. Fireworks still seems to work so I'm thankful :)
Apparently the download size can vary: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=257 99.
Having multiple macs, I guess this means I can't reuse the package. Darn.
When the 'show icon preview' box is checked in the 'Show View Options'
pane, the preview icon for images with a portrait aspect
ratio (taller than it is wide) are incorrectly drawn.
View an image of it happening here.
This is a screen shot of two folders I made.
Each one has a set of images that are named to match their size
(in pixels).
'show icon preview' is on for both of these folders.
The icon size is set to 128 pixels.
As anyone can see, the landscape images have correct previews,
but the portrait images get smaller. It appears the more narrow
the image is, the smaller the preview.
It is not using it's 128x128 icon space.
The 8 x 128 image is so narrow, it's preview icon disappears altogether!
I've written Apple and sent them the link... *sigh*
I'm sick of all my portrait images having tiny thumbnails!

How did you write them? If you didn't use the BugReporter, chances are that their engineers will never see it.
Anyone know just what the NTFS improvements are? ALso, are there any Samba improvements (for instance, Windows 2003 Server connectivity out of the box?).
You actually expect us to believe that you spoke to a Comcast tech who was knowledgable and helpful?
The full support for USB iPods with iTunes sounds like good news to me.

Slightly off topic, but I haven't found a solution elsewhere. The OS X version of Quake III (1.32-altivectest2 - hasn't been updated for about a year), has an issue with crashing when you get shot in the face with a projectile (the plasma gun is most noticable). I have been trying to find a solution/workaround to this problem but have not had any luck - as is common, I can find plenty of posts from people who also have the problem, but none that provide a solution. Someone mentioned turning down the max framerate, so I set com_maxFPS to 60 (same as my monitor refresh rate), and went ahead and turned all the graphics options to the highest possible quality. This seems to have decreased the frequency of crashes but did not solve the problem completely. Is this the correct variable? How low does it need to be set? Any word on whether these new drivers make the problem better or worse?
PS - I have the Geforce FX 5200, but have seen reports with this happening with ATI cards as well.
For two days now, I have been trying to install the hot XP SP2 security update on my Powerbook running OS X. But without luck.
But guess what? This update by Apple was just a matter of minutes.
Phew!! Apple sure rules in the field of userfriendlyness...
Is anyone else seeing any AirPort Extreme problems with this new update? Since installing it I've been having some serious connectivity problems -- I'm sitting less than 20' away from my AirPort Extreme Base Station, and I keep losing connectivity every few minutes. Connectivity before the update was just fine.
Anyone else seeing this?
Yaz.
Looks like Font Book got some tweaks as well (I'm assuming that's the "font management" part of the fix).
It no longer automatically closes a font set after you disable individual fonts within the set.
I've sent to several email addresses and used this page.
This is a bug that screams in your face when it happens, I shouldn't have to scream in Apple's face. I've already spent way too much time on trying to alert Apple about this obvious error in it's desktop rendering. I love Apple, but in the past few years, I've felt like the guy who has to break up with someone because it's just not working out... they've changed. (The huge amounts of hardware failures makes me feel this way more than anything) It's very sad, it breaks my heart.

I've had no such problems connecting to Comcast. I started subscribing about two years ago (before it was Comcast) and this is in the Boston area. When I first got the service, there were no problems. Then I got a router and after telling them the MAC address of the router, that worked fine, too. Do they have different set-up procedures for new customers or in other parts of the country?

I went into Photoshop and cropped a portrait image progressively smaller. Every icon looked just fine.
I'm quite happy that all my portrait images have proper sized thumbnails!

None of the megaraid stuff is in 10.3.4. The disk utility plugin was there, it's just been updated.
The megaraid manpage seems to indicate support for RAID level 5; but the GUI in disk utility still only offers the old 0 and 1.
So, does anyone know - does the megaraid command support more features than the kernel extension has available yet, or is it just that the GUI isn't there yet? Maybe they just don't put a GUI on it except in the server edition (sneaky buggers!) - anyone with OS X server out there that can check?
And, in general - anyone out there with a bunch of blank disks they can play around with and see if they can make a RAID 5 set?
If anyone has OS X server around, and if they're interested, these md5 sums are from the regular OS X; maybe we could compare results:

I haven't had many problems that Apple haven't been willing to fix (if it's a recognised fault, eg. the iBook logic board failures). But the reliabiliy of their overall systems probably rates higher than most PC manufacturers.
That said, the best way to contact them about any sort of issues is their BugReporter. Their feedback pages and emailing them don't seem to do much more than to add your idea to the chain of others. If you know how to submit a good bug report, it's the only way to go.
eg. the iBook logic board failures
That's only the newer iBook (Al)
There are many people with Ti Books less than 2 years old with the same logic board problem, but it costs $1000 to fix.
I just bought a G5 and damn if it's not the first time I've considered buying the extended warrenty.
I also bought an air conditioner to keep it cooler.
The company I used to work for was very Mac oriented (now busted up) Several coworkers had Ti Powerbooks, now the talk about how they never move them... WTF?! You pay thousands extra for a portable computer that's too fragile to be portable. Like I said, I love Macs and have been a customer for years. The last black powerbooks were, in my opinion, the best laptop apple has made, they are very sturdy and mine is still running (almost non-stop) for 3+ years. (I did upgrade the hard drive after 2 years, it was making a noise and I wanted bigger anyway)
And more to the point of your response, I don't think it's my job to be Apple's QA department. If someone working for me in QA couldn't catch this obvious ERROR they'd be replaced.

If they're iBooks and are less than 2 years old then they should be covered by the program

I'm not saying that you should be their QA department, but remember that what's obvious to one person, may not be to another (no matter what it is).
iSync 1.5 doesn't have support for Nokia 7610 either. I really hope I won't have to wait for Tiger to do something as simple as synchronizing my mobile phone.
The Finder's 'Show Icon Preview' option is crap (like a lot of other things about Finder). I frequently deal with folders containing hundreds and even thousands of images (wrong - I am a wedding photographer).
.subfolder of the image folder; or save previews in the resource fork of each image (my preferred scheme). Save the f*c%king previews anywhere, just don't throw them away after spending 5 minutes generating them. I thought computers were supposed to minimise duplication of labour.
The Finder chugs along calculating all the previews from the 6Mpixel files. It is slow. Why doesn't it use any available JPEG preview to make the thumbnail? I don't know. Does it cache the results of its hard work? Yes but only temporarily. Tomorrow you will have to wait for 1000 thumbnails to be generated again. Boring. The Finder should: save the previews, or at least allow users to specify that they would like the previews saved; or save previews in an invisible
In 10.3.x at least, use of the Preview option in folders with many images caused a bug. I don't know if it is still there. After previewing a large number of images and then closing all Finder windows, top would show that the Finder was eating up all available clock cycles. CPU usage for Finder would often read 80 or 90 per cent. This would go on indefinitely, and I am sure there are hundreds of machines out there now giving shit performance as a result, because the typical user will never spot this or fix it. The problem persists after a reboot. I learned to fix it by trashing Finder preferences (com.apple.Finder.plist) and not using the Finder's Icon Preview.
There is a very good little free utility called Pic2Icon which generates previews and puts them where they should be, in the resource fork. You just drag a folder of images onto it and it gets on with the task. Unfortunately it doesn't use JPEG previews either, so it is still quite slow, but at least it allows you to avoid using the Finder's awful preview feature. It sometimes chokes if you drag a folder containing a few thousand 6Mpxl files, at least on my G4 800x2/512, but I think that's just memory shortage.
I just noticed on ADC that Apple has released yesterday (20040810) the final Java 1.4.2 Update 1 Developer Tools. Previous releases were "Developer Previews".
I'm downloading it now (a 43.6MB download), and will try to post what's been fixeed since DP3 soon.

yeah, that'll do it. Thanks for the info.
What is the robbing of a bank, compared to the founding of a bank? -- Bertolt Brecht
Apple already has an existing raid .kext, so the new one is very likely to be a driver for MegaRAID cards. I may have to get one if the performance tests look good :)
But it doesn't support bluetooth sync'ing with the Motorola V600 (or it seems, a long line of other newer Motorola phones). You're forced to buy the USB cable, so how is that a bluetooth improvement??
You didn't even read Apple's iBook return program, did you?
It covers specific model numbers. It does not cover a computer by how old it is. Just because a computer has been owned for less than 2 years, does not mean it is a computer that was made less than 2 year ago. And as I said before (a lot of repeating myself with you) it is a Titanium laptop, not the new Aluminum laptop (which is in the model number range in Apple's return program)
Also, to be redundant, a person working in QA needs to be one of those people that Big Screaming Bugs are obvious to.
So, after all of your posting you have helped me 0%, I guess I should thank you for trying, but I'm won't.

I did and I am very aware of that fact. However, the majority of iBooks made since late-2002 are amongst the model numbers covered by the replacement program.
And as I said before (a lot of repeating myself with you) it is a Titanium laptop, not the new Aluminum laptop (which is in the model number range in Apple's return program)
Are you talking about a PowerBook or an iBook? There is a slight difference!
Also, to be redundant, a person working in QA needs to be one of those people that Big Screaming Bugs are obvious to.
You obviously don't program for a living, or at least, don't do it very well.
Yeah, yeah, laugh all you want. Safari worked fine with the LavaLife http://www.lavalife.com/ instant messenger pane before the update. Now it crashes immediately when you enter one of the three areas (where the IM pane becomes active). The crash reporter doesn't even get activated. The workaround for that is to turn off Java in Preferences. Unfortunately, the LL system won't log you out properly without Java, so you will appear as always logged on. Anyone know how to get back the older version?

No. The iBook has a semi-transparent, plastic (possibly acrylic) case. The PowerBook comes in two varieties - the older titanium and the newer Aluminium. The iBook was never made in metal (except for it's Magnesium frame).
Now you're just being an ass...
