I'm absolutely interested in AV for Linux! (Mostly because I op public facing mail-servers, so we scan in/out bound mail)
I agree that Unix-like OSes are better built, mostly due to the inherent separation of the user space; but if we had a wide-spread adoption of Ubuntu desktops, you don't think a % of users would just always run in root-space? Or some app developer would make some "neato-desktop-shareware-gizmo" that runs as root, but then the app gets hijacked.. all because the end-user wanted to have a virtual dancer on their wallpaper?
OK; I'm find with transparent government, and I realize it'll take extra manpower to accomplish that (initially anyway); but having someone do social-networking sites it not the same as transparency.. wtf.
I want my $0.002 back I contributed to that persons salary!
What about the carbon goats emit in the form of fecal matter? And don't tell me someone pooper-scoopers the whole hill collecting all of it to turn into ethanol. The carbon they don't emit as feces is stored until the goat itself dies.
So really you only gain the burning oil factor vs the lawnmowers anyway.
That requires they adhear to the DMCA's Safe Harbour guidelines (Wiki Sez...
Unfortunately I don't know enough about the actual legalese of the provision or Lindon Labs to know if they qualify as Safe Harbour, but just because I'm a middle man doesn't automajickly grant safe-harbour protections.
Because the physical plant your webhost has to provide is 1 hardened structure with a buncha equipment.. expensive.. yes.. but now imagine you have to run a few of those buildings, and of course all the physical plant that connects them together and the COs to the houses? Once you have plant that large, you also have to deal with repairing it, since you'll have a higher failure rate (downed utility pole if you're overhead, or some guy with a backhoe if it's underground). Everyone seems to think that 1mb==1mb regardless of where and how it gets there.. sorry.. that's just not the case.
If you -want- $0.10GB for b/w, rent out a full cage in a colo and live in it.
As for the $ now vs the $ spent for 6mb.. keep in mind that the $ the spent to get 6mb was -alot- back then.. It'd be like trying to buy a 1gb switch 10 years ago.. you can do it, but it's ALOT more cost.. you can get the same 1gb switch now for -alot- cheaper.
Also when comparing Japan/Europe to the US, remember the biggest benefit to the US is also it's biggest hardship.. we're a f-n big country. A (in my mind typical) Euro town is alot smaller in area compared to a US town of the equivalent population (at least outside the NE corridor) That distance means extra physical plant needs to be installed, operated, and maintained. [citation needed]
That said, I personally dislike my cable company, and the Bell's have fallen by the wayside unless it's your only option, and I wish everyone would just run Ethernet to the home already.
Personally I like rail.. the bad part however is it will cost ALOT.. and Amtrak isn't exactly doing a 'great' job thus far.
Will it create jobs? Absolutely.. will it lower congestion at airports, absolutely..
Will it work as a mass-transit system (be sustainable, profitable, used): I'm willing to find out, but it ends up horribly mismanaged and failing or inaccessible because of it; I'm gonna slap someone.
Unfortunately, that windows 95 box is sort of on the better part of the curve.. You're going to have to explain to your father that he got pretty lucky with that, and most people wouldn't consider a computer a 'durable good'; and although 5-7 years would be considered a good life for a desktop, 15 I think most people would consider unreasonable to try and plan for; especially since his "P-66" (P-166 I think it should be) didn't require a fan or otherwise near the level of moving parts that current machines do.
I'd see what the spec is for the (new?) software he's going to be using and get the coolest/simplest/more durable design you can do to run it. If you buy good parts, you can probably get a the processor and mobo to last that long, but PSUs and Fans have shorter lives.
Also, I'm frankly a little amazed that he's had 1x 500mb drive with all his data on it for that long. I would HIGHLY recommend he implement a backup solution for his data.. it can be as simple as some online data repository he compresses and uploads his data to (GMailFS even!). Set it up automagically to run at night when no one is in the office.
Awesome. So you need a connection that's faster than what most people have to play games at lower resolution than most PC gamers (and many console gamers) do.
Most, but not all. Looking at the Steam Hardware Survey (the best I personally know of, but please cite better ones if you know of any), 1024 x 768 is only 1.5% less then the leading screen res of 1280 x 1024 (23.87% of results). Personally monitor will do 1600x1200, but I rarely run games at that resolution anyway.
Either way, I'm agree that it'll be interesting to see if this actually works in the real world as advertised, and how the 'average gamer' likes it.
Oh yeah, and it'll blow my bandwidth cap in about forty hours.
Well the magic is maybe they will peer up with some larger ISPs, offering special 'OnLive' service (for a small fee of course..). 'OnLive' could colo with that ISP and all the traffic stays local to that net. Maybe it would some day become just a no-fee value add.
As for b/w caps, not having to live with them, I'm spoiled I suppose; So I'm sorry for those that are stuck with them because their ISP hates their customers.
For one thing, a DDOS doesn't do, and by definition, can't do permanent damage, nor can it kill people.
Firstly, I'm interesting in where you got a definition of DDoS that includes the clause 'cannot do permanent damage'? You're probably thinking of of stuff like blowing up buildings though.. sure.. it's not-likely that a DDoS would blow up a building, but there is a likelihood that it could cause permanent damages. If nothing else because of the inaccessibility of real-time data streams.
If you DDoS a bank during it's nightly batch, you can cause that bank to loose a days worth of interest for example. That's a real and permanent damage.
Ever hear of Telepresence surgery? (I'm sure there are probably safeguards in play for TP-Surgery, but still.. you could be denying life-saving surgery to someone)
True, most of the internet is just kids torrenting and arguing on the internet (like I'm doing right now!), but that doesn't mean it's -all- stuff like that.
I agree that the list is FUBAR, and that for the most part it is in fact a consoler's list (but hey, they play games too)..
One thing I really dislike about lists like this is 'newer' games often float towards the top because it's fresh in people's mind.
I'm sorry, but I don't see anything Novel about CoD4. I just don't.
For 'Influential' games, I'd peg stuff like the old Bard's Tale (since it pretty much solidified the semi-graphical RPG in the world), and as much as I hate it, I'd even put WoW near the top (on the basis that it's claiming more users then probably any video game ever..).
Early stuff that started it all should just be assumed and as such the list should be 'Top 50 Most Influential games that are not Space War, Pong, or PacMan'
Pretty sure a local university does that here.. but what they do is if you click through to the site, the SITE itself tells you "Hey Dumbass.. you just got phished.. here's some info and the whys-and-wherefors". (The Site in question would actually be under the admins control and on the LAN)
I agree with most people here that the follow up email idea is bad because I'm probably MORE likely to ignore an email that says it's from the government
Bowel movements would be pretty easy to predict tbh. You just get the Android app to track your bowel movements, it'll upload it to a google appliance gizmo that creates a trend.. maybe some input function to add in the primary sections of your diet (for instance, you ate something with alittle more fat or fiber.. etc..)
I for one support game makers if I like their product. Because of this I've supported several non-US based game companies like Introversion (Darwinia, Defcon, Uplink), Egosoft (X-series), Relic (aka THQ), CDV (various, mostly historical, RTSes)..
There's a ton of good non-US game companies.. i guess if you focus strickly on Consoles, like alot of people, then it's EA or {JapaneseGameCompanyHere}.
I guess I'm just spoiled.. but why do people still use 'banks' ? (In the US anyway.. I can't attest to other nations and how C.U.s are handled)
I've been a happy customer/(and technically co-owner) of a Credit Union for a fairly long time.. They've yet to do anything stupid enough to get me pissed off about and I stare at people in amazement as they deal with silly archaics like "Deposit Slips" and "Ooh we have 'same day deposits!'" (I have -that minute- deposits). I'm not bent-over from behind on fees.. never paid for ATM use (except in cases of privately owned ATMs like at a nightclub or something).
I guess if you travel alot or otherwise need diverse locations and/or there's just not a Credit Union in your neighborhood, that's probably the only reason.
mod +1; I also hate the Needle/Haystack Haystack/Needle operator ordering..
of course upgrading your code to make it compliant will be a PITA...
True, but since L.B. was in quarantine, maybe his Invul flag wasn't set and all they needed was a Wall of Flame.

Also, in my case, they usually make it to the dryer too..
I've learned to be alittle more careful.. but that doesn't mean they don't occasionally get a nice wash and dry :/

By the look of it, you'll still be waiting..
:]
Might I recommend using the code post type in the future?

I think thinking more like the transfer of large quantity funds between banks.
Although I'm totally spitting out of my behind since I don't really understand that much of how high finance bank and ACH transactions really work.
For one thing, a DDOS doesn't do, and by definition, can't do permanent damage, nor can it kill people.

Except there was a significantly less overall MMO players at the time.
EQ1 probably had comparable market share in the MMO market when it was out then WoW does now.
And this is coming from someone who didn't like EQ at all (UO 4 lyfe yo)
"he threatened and deliberately generated fear."
Actually wouldn't that be terrorism?
Jules Verne called, he wants his time-machine back.
Dupe story:

What? Pavlov's Classical Conditioning still works?
Oh well.
If I demonstrate classical conditioning on some other video game, can I get in the news too? Pretty please?
Also, Daikatana was very notable because it had signifigant delays, but more importantly, didn't live up to the hype.
It was the first game (that did get release, unlike DNF) that really set the bar for disappointment.

Sorry if I sound like Clark Howard here....
One thing come to mind when looking at this sucker:
Prototype Cyber-deck
Now I need to get one, weather proof it alittle, set it up on a cowboy (neal?) sling, and get some display googles and I'm golden.
