  1. Re:One word on Browser Privacy Test · · Score: 1

I agree. If the website doesn't bother to serve proper web pages to javascript disabled browsers, then it is not really worth it.

I'm not sure if that's true when you are using noscript. Certainly for flashblock it isn't true, because the site identifies your browser as being able to run flash.

In other words, they might have a flash and a non flash version, but they serve you the full flash version cause you *are* flash enabled, just blocked. With noscript you might get a javascript page, even though you block it. Of course that depends on how they implement the degradation of service, some websites will do it right.

That's apart from the fact that your assume that bad web programming means bad content. That's not the case. If I want to go to a site cause using it is beneficial to me, then I want to use it, whether they have smart or dumb people coding it.

I know I've found that with noscript I find myself constantly managing permissions, instead of browsing. Flashblock is a little less annoying, but obviously less complete in its blocking.

You set the permissions for sites that you visit often, and you never have to set them again. Most sites that you visit to once or twice don't need scripts to load (if it's a news site for example), so you don't have to set the permission, and simply leave it. If it saves me from a frame that loads a malicious script from another site (which it has done a couple of times now), then I'm more than happy to allow/disallow certain sites from running scripts in my browser. Especially those damn advertising companies.

I think one of the greatest games to EVER be released would have to be Grim Fandango. It's packed with an awesome story, along with some beautiful scenery and voice acting that I'm still yet to see outdone in any games over the past 10 years. If anyone else reading this hasn't played the game, then I high recommend you go out and find it (or stay inside and find it online). For those unfamiliar with it, it plays in the same sort of style as Monkey Island.

Seriously, check it out. They've just recently released the original design document, it's worth checking it out (They've taken the original story down... But Kotaku's mirror is still available)

Well you obviously didn't read the rest of my post when I clearly pointed out:

Not saying that Australia is alone in any of these aspects

The trouble is, I see a lot of kids who say they know a lot about technology, they're interested in gadgets and high tech gear, but when it comes down to actually being able to google for something, or to trouble shoot software when an unexpected error occurs, or even something as simple as going through the options in a program to see what you can change/customize -- these sort of things are beyond the average Australian. Don't be naive and believe that the rest of the country who loves only sports and hot women, are like your friends who enjoy IT and are IT savvy. I don't want to burst your bubble, but a lot of Australians are very shallow, and generally very "sheepish".

Don't get me wrong, I want to see this country thrive and strive with it's IT industry just as much as you do, but it only takes 5 minutes to step into any Government workplace to realise that most of them have no clue beyond checking emails in Outlook and reading news sites in Internet Explorer.

  12. I think it comes down to... on Raising Doubts About Australia's Broadband Upgrade Plan · · Score: 5, Interesting

The point that they're playing on the fact that the majority of Australians have no idea how technology works, nor do they have any understanding about the terminology behind it. Simple things like you mention to someone, "I use a 512k connection" -- they would assume that you would be downloading at 512kb/s, not 1/8th of that.

Couple this with the fact that IT has always been the sort of subject that kids used to figure out ways to get around their schools proxy (so they can waste time on bebo at school instead of actually hanging out with their friends), rather than learning how a computer works.

This is also the reason why Australians get sucked into those stupid Nigerian scams so easy -- because a lot of us don't use common sense. Not saying that Australia is alone in any of these aspects, it just seems to be that because our Government has no idea how the series of tubes works, the rest of the country hasn't really taken any interest. Discussion about things like the proposed internet filter are great for the general public, because it gives them a chance to understand how intricate the internet and networking in general is...

Or they roll your eyes at you and put their iPod headphones back in -- they won't have to worry about security with Web 2.0.

"Sorry, you do not have Internet Explorer installed. To download, please visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/"

Sure, most of us probably have a FF install on a USB key somewhere, but what about the people who just bought their computer from the store? This'll drive them insane just like the "Keyboard error. Press any key to continue" error.
