I guess it comes down to who sponsored the study? only the advertising R&D budget of quite large companies would be able to sponsor this sort of thing, so alcohol companies would be my first bet, possibly tied with cigarette companies?
For example, if the known card is an ace, the team can arrange for it to land on the hand showing a picture card to make a blackjack..
Since blackjack is composed of one picture card and one ace, and all players get their two cards in one round of dealing, how did the players know who was going to get the face card, and, having established that, how did they manipulate the deal to get the ace to the person with the jack? did someone pull out of the draw before they got their second card? you cant do that.
if the known card is a picture card, the team can arrange for it to land as the dealer's 3rd card,
wouldnt that require the participation of every single player at the table? and how did the first person communicate to every single other person what the card was?
"Do professional sports players streak due to the player being "on fire"?
If you answered yes, then you don't understand probability.
And you evidently dont understand sports, since I'm fairly sure professional sports players being successful isnt based on random probabilities.
As a players confidence grows when they're playing well, sometimes they continue to play better and better. And its not just pros that are like that. If I've been playing well recently, I tend to continue playing better and better each time I play. Then I'll have an off game, get crushed, my confidence comes down, and I have to spend the next few games building it back up again.
Why? When did we turn our minds off to video game butchery?
When we decided butchery was more entertaining and exciting than solving puzzles? When we decided that our leisure time would be better spent fulfilling inner fantasies rather than solving puzzles?
Your cable analogy doesnt quite fit, because thats a technical problem with a known solution aka tech support. And I still wouldn't trust us to actually get it done.
You're talking about design work, where any opinions on methods are almost guaranteed to be wildly different.
The likelihood of achieving anything in a meeting is inversely proportional to the number of people in the meeting. So what's the likelihood when the meeting attendees number in the millions?
A group of intelligent geeks like you'd find on slashdot (for the most part) are completely capable of coming up with a transition plan...
But I believe if a group like Slashdot held a huge discussion about it, we would come up with something.
Oh my god, are you kidding? No two people on Slashdot could even agree on whether or not the grits poured on Natalie Portman should be hot or cold.
There are many places in the world where fine conversations about technical and technological advancement could take place, but slashdot isnt one of them.
And here I was thinking Slashdot couldn't get any stupider.
And yet, here is this comment, in all it's glory.
You think music has absolutely no value, adds nothing to this world, and does not make anything better? Well, I've got a call for you, its from BILLIONS of music listeners around the world who would like to have a word.
Can someone mod the parent as troll so we can all get on with our lives?
if it was opt-in, I wouldnt pay it,
I dont download music illegally now, but if I paid five dollars and i could download all the music I wanted, Id need absolute proof that my money would go to the artist, or at the very least the copyright holder, regardless of whether thats a label or not.
without that proof, its a no-go for me.
I dont think it's a big step back. There's still going to be helicopters, plus, with the entire game now played out inside a single city rather than across multiple cities, it seems to make perfect sense - planes just aren't needed.
Presumably the licensing arrangements that Harmonix reached with the various labels doesn't include them (Harmonix) putting out the music on an album. If it had been part of the agreement, it would have cost Harmonix significantly more money to get the record labels to agree to contribute their music to the game, and if the game didnt do well, then thats Harmonix out of pocket for a lot more money.
Isn't that kinda like talking about:
"Racial, religious, or gender segregation -within an individual residence"?
If someone does not order a monthly mail subscription to Playboy magazine to their home, I don't think that should really be equated with the word "censorship".
If someone orders a cable TV subscription, and does not choose to pay for the MilitaryBlood&Gore channel, I don't think that should really be equated with the word "censorship".
If someone orders a cable TV subscription, and tells the cable company please do not deliver the cooking channels because my spouse I and our children are on a diet, I don't think that should really be equated with the word "censorship".
I dont think any of those things were what the original poster were talking about, I think if you read the post with just a little bit of insight, you might reach the conclusion (as I did) that the comment was referring to parents "censoring" material from their children, as in "I dont want you to watch that show or read that magazine or look at that website."
It's a form of cencorship, but not one that anyone could protest against, unless they think that they should be telling people how to raise their children.
Police officers are trained and take on the risks of the job
I've known a few police officers in my time, and none of them have mentioned the course they undertook on how to take on armed criminals while unarmed themselves. Must be a very short course.
If the police think they're having trouble recruiting members now, wait until they tell everyone they'll be expected to take on armed criminals while unarmed themselves.
Calling in police firepower only where likely to be needed is a sound strategy,
SO what you're saying is, if a police officer is on patrol, and sees a crime occuring, he should back off and await armed backup? Or tap the criminal on the shoulder and ask them nicely to stop? What if the officer is being attacked? They could explain to the criminal that they should await the arrival of armed officers before continuing the attack?

No, because the probability for ANYTHING, given enough chances, is 1.
Or rather, APPROACHES 1.
If I toss a coin a million times, the odds on getting a single head toss approach 1, but not quite 1, because I could toss a million tails.
After that, I just double click on an icon rather than having to trade out discs every time I want to play a new game. Is that a big deal?
You only play PC games which install themselves completely onto the hard drive, and dont require the CD to play?
Why? When did we turn our minds off to video game butchery?

Thats an interesting point, and one worthy of discussion.
But the gp didn't say all that, and if that was their intention, they should have expressed it better.
But instead they said something inflammatory, with no backup and no clear result intended.
Ergo, troll.
Damn rabbits, coming to our country, stealing our jobs, and then losing them at the first sign of headlights!
And here I was thinking Slashdot couldn't get any stupider.

It is subsidizing an industry that is dying because ppl do not want their crap.
Yep, that music industry is dying, look at that poor pathetic creature, it's on it's last legs...
we should blame the rioters not the thieves?
Not the rioters, we should blame the shops. All those shiny goods enabled our need for looting...
They're not being sued for rejecting the offer, they're being sued for keeping it quiet, and giving themselves payrises.
You linked to it, you should at least read it.
I second the prediction that EA will NOT own the firm by the release of GTA4.
6 weeks and counting....

I assume the only reason you haven't been modded Funny for this is that not enough Slashmods have heard and can remember the lyrics.
However, rest assured your comment brought a wry smile to my face, and points would be yours if I had them.
Meanwhile, wtf is a flounder pounder? He who sleeps with the fishes? Troy McClure?

My understanding is that the Monty Python foot icon was for when funny things happen, not when funny things are written
Does this mean we can expect a slashdot article for every Penny Arcade or Ctrl-Alt-Del comic?
I can see it now, "Gabe and Tycho poke fun at Mass Effect", and an image link to the comic.

As evidenced on all those "judging" shows; People's Court, Judge Judy, Judge Alex, etc.
Yes, because that is a case of incorrect recollection, and not people lying out their asses. Think of all those perjury cases we'll have to reopen!
"I'm sorry your Honour, I blame my human brain for saying I didn't embezzle a million billion dollars, when I clearly did..."
"decreased the average amount of time residents spent driving by 100 hours per month"
Huh? The average resident now drives 3 hours less per day? Is everyone in KY a truck driver or something?
Maybe they mean the residents when considered as a whole, rather than any individual resident driving 100 hours less per month?

Well, if we look at the top 20 selling console games of all time, I see numerous franchises (Mario, GTA) which would beg to differ...
Uh, games _by_ definition, have to have a winning/losing condition
Okay, so could you please point out the person/people who have won World Of Warcraft? Or The Sims? or hell, let's go further back, SimCity?
