  1. Ashes to diamonds... on Lab Created Diamonds Come to Market · · Score: 1

My mother is getting her deceased fiance (who was cremated) turned into a diamond for a ring. He was a big, burly, man's man guy, too. She hasn't decided on a color or carat size yet--I'm pulling for a girly color, just so I can giggle every time I see it.

    Gotta love it.

  3. Moleskin, lots of clean underwear and socks on Hurricane Relief - What Would You Bring? · · Score: 1

With people possibly having new workboots that aren't broken in, and doing labor their hands aren't used to, you might want to invest in several rolls (ROLLS, not the stick-on circles from Walgreens) of moleskin. That way people don't get incapacitated by blisters, which lead to other nasty things in the area you'll be working in.

Remember LOTS of changes of underwear and socks. It's hot and humid down there, and I can't emphasize enough how good just a change of underwear and socks can make you feel.

Yes, I'm a mom, why do you ask? ;)

I wish I could offer any consolation, but thanks to our lovely President, the redefinition of the federal Labor Laws in the past year screwed you. State laws are superceded by the Fair Labor Standards Act. Try googling "FLSA" and "salaried", and you see the SPECIFIC exemption relating to your SO that was put in by the Bush administration. Bush expanded the no overtime rule to cover IT workers specifically and explicitly in the latest rewrite from the Labor Department.

Unionizing will just put you on the wrong side of the law, unfortunately. Do you really think Bush gives a flying flip about IT? He's the one pushing so hard for Outsourcing, for crying out loud! One of his lackeys showed up at a PeopleSoft company meeting to espouse the wonders of outsourcing to the PEOPLE BEING OUTSOURCED. That's clueless for ya.

I wish you luck, because it sure won't get better before it gets a lot worse in the next 4 years.

  5. Re:There aren't enough women in CS on Attracting Women Into Computer Science · · Score: 2, Insightful

Have you ever been in a position of hiring someone for a job? If you haven't, everything you said above is all your theory arising from the school you attend.

Get a grip. The world isn't based on your specific college.

Having actually BEEN in a position of both BEING a woman at a high school for Math, Science, and Computers, then a college getting a mix of History and Computer Science degrees, and NOW hiring for open reqs--it has not a damn thing to do with how many women sat around you. It has to do with who is sitting in that room with me trying to hire on the basis of their personal bias. I've had to walk into interviews myself with a superhuman knowledge of esoterical crap to even get past the "we're only interviewing a woman because we have to" looks. And these were the nice guys!

Every day working with IT is like that--constantly having to work around MCSE dorks who believe they have such esoterical knowledge that they can never be replaced, and therefore never have to work with anyone outside their comfort zone.

So give it a rest about women being smart about not being outsiders--male IT is a bunch of toddlers that want to keep their toys to themselves until you can prove that you have cool ways of playing, too.

In addition, I've had to train my sysadmin husband about not having team meetings at Hooters--he actually didn't know why that would be a problem, there were all guys on his team! I've had to train male co-workers about how BAD things look and how much their own actions turn off women pursuing computer jobs (ever see a pregnant woman lifting a PC monitor off a work desk? Then why be the moving company AND the PC tech for your customers?) What about the sharing who's gonna pick up the kids from daycare after work when you have a coding deadline or a server go down? Bet it's the wife! And she's got her own job, too!

But I'm sure you're a nice guy--you have a girlfriend who's a geek, too. :) But start thinking about how you're going to SHARE family duties with your geek wife. Maybe you'll start understanding why women don't pursue such a family-unfriendly industry.

  7. lsmft2001 didn't designate which product line-- on Using Thin Clients with PeopleSoft? · · Score: 1

First of all--I work on EnterpriseOne primarily, and linuxhansl is addressing Enterprise products (Sybase gave it away). I have done an Enterprise install, but know enough to recognize the architecture differences, and know what to put where. *grin*

Check the MTRs for the thin clients:
    1. Browsers other than Netscape and IE aren't supported. Mozilla support is in the works. However, a tweak to linuxhansl's post--it isn't all platforms--only on the client machines are browsers supported. That's what's important to you, but realize that a linux client isn't supported at this time, or in the next year. Windows XP is barely supported, so I doubt linux clients are going to be requested for my testing group for a while.

    2. Novell and SuSE are not going to be supported for enterprise servers for over a year--RedHat Advanced Server 3 has precedence, and is hogging the development resources currently. I'm banking my hardware requests on that.

I think you're talking EnterpriseOne (because Enterprise is purely internet-based so the power user issue isn't a problem, and E1 has various implementation choices, like fat client), so you need to look into installing the WebSphere that comes with your folder of CDs and start up JAS. That gives you the flexibility you're wanting for your power users to only need a browser.

The weird part about assuming E1 is you say Win95, 98, and 2000 clients-only 2000 is supported for a client anyway on the E1 line. I'm really familiar with the MTRs, so you're confusing me there. Any way you can put more info in your post? I'd love to help you out!

I currently shop online not just because the prices are better, but because I'm sick of dealing with the MCSE techs at Best Buy, CompUSA, etc, who think just because I'm there with my husband discussing specs, they need to contribute to the conversation. But to my husband's credit, he's good about laughing in their face and turning back to me when they are being obnoxious. 11. UPS.. Like Hell! on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 2, Funny

My mother-in-law sent a box of irreplacable things via UPS. Like my husband's childhood teddy bear. A photo album from birth to now of her beloved youngest son. A quilt she herself made (and she can't make any more due to arthritis). An heirloom deviled egg dish (yes, there is such a thing-but you only find it in the South). You name it. 2 whole boxes of such stuff. Uninsured.

However, she was told at the Jackson, MS, depot that she was not allowed to close the 2 boxes--a UPS person had to do that. Dutifully, my extremely gullible mother-in-law hands over her 2 open boxes to get sent off to me.

Fast forward 2 weeks after I receive the boxes. She is talking about how I haven't said how I liked my egg dish and cookie mix. Bells go off on my head, as the box was rather strangely empty and the quilt had been covered in chocolate chips, and I had only gotten one box. Evidently, she had actually sent 2--some low-life had taken out what s/he wanted (some of the pictures were missing, and 2 photo albums had been "combined" into one.
I had a quilt, and one Xmas present. Some idiot had taken the heirloom deviled egg dish (causing _my_ mother, who is not AS southern as my mother-in-law, to HOWL with laughter thinking of THAT gift getting explained to a grandmother/brother/girlfriend). I was extremely offended, and got designated to call UPS.

The conversation went something like this:
"Yes, I need customer service. Yes, ma'am, I'm missing over half of shipment number XYZ, and would like to speak to the supervisor of the Jackson, MS, depot about what I consider a theft."

Customer Rep: "Ma'am, what was in the box?"

"Well, let's see, the usual irreplacible, priceless objects such as my husband's childhood teddy bear, a photo album tracing from his birth to high school, an heirloom piece of glassware.."

    The customer service lady groans.

I didn't get off the phone until I had an issue number, her name, and her phone number, and had assured her my father-in-law was returning to the depot the next day to "speak" with the supervisor. In case you don't know Southernese, "speak" is a pretty serious word.

He got a personal apology from the supervisor about the theft. And eventually, a $100 check (all uninsured packages are worth).

But sometimes, I giggle to myself, thinking of the guilt someone's carrying over giving a stolen egg dish to their grandmother.

You can't take what people say on ICQ as face-time, I'm sorry! I ended up moving to his town to a better paying job, but the on-line time is less.
