  1. hmm on Countering the Arguments Against Unbundling Windows · · Score: 4, Insightful

Sure us nerds can sit in our ivory tower and say that people would like Linux (or other alternatives)because they won't know the difference. But the truth is: people don't want to do backflips for an operating system in order to make it work the way they want. Windows just plain works for the vast majority of people. I guarantee that the unbundling of Windows from PCs in the EU will have no effect on Microsoft's sales just because people will use what they are comfortable with.

In the long-run why would artists want to sign contracts with record companies when they market the music themselves? Sure when bands turn into household names. But the unknowns who lack the resources to promote themselves on a national/global level need a record company with resources to do so. Sure there are things that small bands can do to reach a global audience. But when was the last time you heard of a band selling-out a stadium that had a popular MySpace profile and no record deal?

It's been my experience that those people who have 30+ (a more realistic number than 50) years of experience are too heavily relied upon at work and are looking for change in order to relieve them of some burden.

Case and point: I assisted with an ERP implementation at an educational institution a while back. Most of the business processes were still being done on paper. The people who have been doing purchasing and payroll for 30+ years were actually the ones who wanted to change the business processes so that they would have less work to do such that they might have a half hour in the middle of the day to take a lunch break.

  5. Not just in education on Teachers Give ERP Implementations Failing Grades · · Score: 3, Insightful

It's common to think that ERP or some other big software is going to be the silver bullet for all of your company's problems. In fact, that is just throwing money at the issue.

ERP implementations are meant to mirror existing business processes. If your business processes are ass to begin with, and there is no change before an ERP roll-out, your business will still experience the same issues.

All this "blame the ERP vendor" stuff is crap. I blame the people who are running the system and poorly implemented it.

Maybe with a Linux distro built into the motherboard, there will finally be a solution where you don't have to go on a two day scavenger hunt for drivers. The last time I installed Fedora and Suse, both times I had to spend countless hours looking for Linux drivers for my NForce chipset. That All-in-One crap is for the birds.

I found a cure for Type 2 diabetes (Oblig. [voice=Wilford Brimley]Di-a-bee-tus). My aunt had type 2 diabetes for most of her life. Then she started exercising, eating right and lost 120lbs. She hasn't been on the needle for over a year. She still checks her blood sugar regularly just in case.

What are they trying to do now that they found the cause? Call me insensitive, but if they do find a medicinal cure it would only serve to enable some people to keep living unhealthy lifestyles. I think now that they have found what causes type 2, they should see what causes juvenile diabetes and cure that.

Beowulf Cluster on one processor die. How badass would that be? And by badass, I mean, totally 1337. And by "be", I mean be.

I read a lot of whining in the comments for this article. Let me put this in a different perspective: this is more like a frontier in programming that we're on here. In the past, a single core processor running serial code was fine on any desktop. Any applications needing parallel programming was run on high-end servers or Beowulf Clusters. They weren't for the average computer user out there.

Now we have all these new-fangled dual/tri/quad core processors in the average microcomputer. It would be foolish to let all that computing power go to waste by running code is series. It just became economical for just about every application to be written in parallel.

Of course, in Murders and Executions, it is up to the buying company to decide before getting heavily invested. They might have an excellent product but ass for business processes.
