  1. Form over function. on Update on the Optimus Keyboard · · Score: 1

This keyboard looks very cool. Other than that, however, there's not much to it. I don't look at my keyboard, I type on it. I think this would be far more useful for a universal remote. It would be great to have physical keys that can display their current function and can be seen in the dark.

  2. Re:The only real problem on Russia Plans Martian Nuclear Station · · Score: 1

The Russian space program is not bankrupt. Sure, it does not have the huge budget that NASA does (did?), but they make MUCH better use of the little money that they have. This is not the Soviet space program where it was OK to blow up a few rockets and cosmonauts, and then just cover it up. The Russian space program is actually trying to function like a real business -- making deals in the private sector, and attracting publicity. These people mean business.

Now, the idea of the nuclear power plant on Mars does seem a bit farfetched. However, if any country could do it at this point, Russia is it. China is still ramping up to get one of it's people into space. India is thinking about it. The USA has other serious problems (economy, Iraq, North Korea, bin Laden, Columbia blowing up, etc). Russia, of course has Chechnya, but it is enjoying a relatively favorable economy at this point, due to the high oil prices.

Despite the misconceptions that have been created after the Soviet Union fell apart, Russia still has some tricks up it's sleeve.

You got anything to back that up? Dangerous compared to what? THE most dangerous compiler out there is MS Visual C++. It does not comply with standards and often produces broken code. gcc on the other hand has a very good track record of keeping up with standards, and producing very robust code even with the highest level optimization.

  6. Saving commercial jets. on First Emergency Use of Whole-Aircraft Parachute · · Score: 1
I've always wondered why commercial airplanes are designed in such a way that any major failure is a death sentence for everyone onboard. I mean, the only emergency procedures that exist are for water landings...usually an airplane doesn't get to land in the water, but rather crashes and burns. No real use for a life vest at that point.

I think the answer would be to design modular plane, where the passenger compartment could be separeted from the rest of the plane. That way you have a much lighter escape capsule if you will. Dump the baggage, dump the fuel, dump all the crap, but save the people.

It would work great in case of a hijacking also. Somebody starts making trouble and telling you to fly the plane somewhere...just push the button and separate the plane. Then you gently flow down to the ground and wait for the people with guns.

I suppose fatal plane crashes just don't happen often enough for any company to invest into such a drastic redesign. However, I am pretty disappointed that the safety of airplanes has improved only marginally in the entire history of the commercial airline industry.

  13. Re:Wondering why NPR might do this? on Blogspace vs. NPR · · Score: 1

Your example demonstrates a clear example of copyright infringement.

If you set up a site to make money from NPR's content, their linking policy is the last thing you'll be worrying about. NPR will sue your pants off pursuant to the US copyright law -- linking policy would be just icing on the cake.

If NPR is afraid the people will listen to their streams, then why in the world would they be putting them up? They should be well-prepared to handle a barrage of people trying to listen to their programming. They advertise their site on the air! They must expect people to chew up their bandwidth.

So in summary, I think your example is irrelevant to the issue at hand.

The whole "selling off" trend that you percieve is simply the equivalent of digging in your garage and seeing what old crap you can sell before it becomes totally worthless. MIR has outlived its original planned mission many times over -- it was time for it to go.

I think the Russian space program is simply streamlining -- getting rid of the old, useless things, and finding new streams of revenue, i.e. space tourism. Hardly the demise.
