The first example you gave countered your own point. Blu-ray is a very proprietary Sony format (that wasn't standard when the PS3 was released). HD-DVD was inferior from a technical point of view but from a licensing standpoint HD-DVD was far far superior to blu-ray.

Tax and shipping will be at most $10. The power adapter most people will probably already have because its a phone charger. If they don't that's probably only another $10. So that's $45-$55 to get the device to your door. Not only that but these will be distributed by schools which means shipping and tax go out the window and they could get a bulk discount for chargers.

Windows? I hope they don't use windows. It would probably be pretty easy for them to use the compatibility layer they've been developing for mac over the last few years. Since OS X is unix maybe they could use the Linux kernel. My fingers sre crossed because this would mean I would no longer need windows installed on my machines.

The best solution is to have a manual overrid (that the computer cannot control) in all cars with self driving capabilities. That way if the driver notices anything funny they can go into manual mode. Of course that defeats the biggest benefit of self-driving cars you can't be sleeping, drunk ect. at the wheel.
