I know this gets brought up ad nauseam, but it is pertinent to your comments : MS is a monopoly, and as such is regulated by a different set of rules and standards.
NOT regulating a monopoly leads to disastrous consequences for all involved.
Rather than add even more unnecessary software to already bloated to the point of being crippled systems (I'm looking at you Dell, HP, etc..), why not force MS to unbundle IE ? This would:
Force MS to use an actual app instead of the activex in IE for windows update. Why anyone thought it was a good idea to use a web browser to do a system update is beyond me.
Allow users to completly remove IE (save for the rendering engine - which good programming practice dictates should already be separate from the browser).
OK but if the system doesn't come with a web browser to begin with, how do I install FF ? I like the idea of this being a setup wizard. On first boot it asks which browser you want to install, downloads the appropriate files, and installs. By all means have IE as default, but allow the user to select another browser if so desired. This would also I hope get rid of the 10 000 (slight exaggeration) different browser add-ons commonly found on new systems.
I use SVN and had used the nautilus SVN scripts which let you do basic SVN commands (update, commit, add, etc) before moving over to netbeans for all my development, which has built in CVS and SVN support. In any case, there are some nautilus CVS scripts which could be helpfull to you.
Not everyone is in a position where they can install their own browser and/or extensions.
Also, why reward that kind of behavior with massive visitor count increases, used in part to determine prices when selling ad space ?
True enough, and I have since gotten in the habit of always ending lines/statements with semicolons. But it's certainly confusing for no real advantage.
Too many exceptions and too vague. No reliable standard implementation.
Semicolons as line endings, for example - in C++/php/perl you need them always, in python you don't. In javascript, sometimes you need them, sometimes you don't.
I really tried to give JS a shot, but when you have the guy that created it saying this or that part of it is a hack, it kinda dims your confidence.
Many programmers I have met, myself included, will pick up php, python, even perl or C++ faster and easier than JS. And it was created for the web, so if web developers have a hard time with it, it kind of defeats the purpose, don't you think?
The main difference with your suggestion is that on a sailboat circumnavigating the globe, there is the very real danger of storms, pirates, reefs, treachurous currents, etc. On Mars there would be a lot less dangers. Probably the biggest would be dust storms, but the two rovers have gone through these successfully. Equipment failure would be another big issue of course, but adequate testing and redundency reduces this greatly.
Radiation is solvable with current technology, even for a deep space mission like a mars or moon base, where the Earth's protective field is absent. There are several approaches to this problem, from heavy shielding to burrowing into the soil. One particularly elegant solution IMO is recrerating the Earth's magnetic field abord the spacecraft.
Wind speeds on Mars are much higher than on Earth due to the very low atmospheric pressure. Speeds of up to 400 km/h can be triggered by the polar 'melt' (sublimation of CO2) during the summer.
Windows Vista home basic & Premium could not be virtualized legally for quite some time. I'm tired of doing these kind of things in grey area mode.
The 'new me' wants to do things the right and legal way! If I am not allowed to do something that way, I will look elsewhere, and advise the same to any that will listen.
Regardless, virtualization is my 3rd choice (they were in order of preference, sorry for not making that clear). What I REALLY want is my first choice -- a live CD that allows me to run the OS on my system with no permanent changes, and at full speed (save CD loading times of course).
Will this new Windows have a liveCD mode, so I can try it without having to go through the pain of partitioning ? Or maybe a utility to install the OS under WINE ? At the very least make it possible to virtualize it.
I'm all for giving MS another shot, but they better make it easy for me to do so. I don't think I would ever switch back, but I would be less eager to switch everyone I know to Linux that might be even slightly possible, if they came out with a workable OS. Which would give me more free time. So please, MS, make this one easy on me !!
The Linux code base has done anything but stall, it is growing, and has been growing even more rapidly in the last couple years. looky here
As far as quality of code, good news there as well, 2008 saw some nice updates to kernel scheduling, better virtualization, a completely new kernel-level graphic manager, and the EXT4 filesystem. These are all 'big deals' in both difficulty of coding and improvements they bring.

Cool, this means they have even less work to do ! ...
I never kept Vista long enough to do an update

Simple, inject a virus that only attacks mutated human cells into the region's water supply.

No, but you must be the only one that didn't just google it.

huh, weird.
Well they're saying "whatever software", maybe they're aware there are other apps that can read/write .doc format.
Or they may be cool with accepting pdf's or plain text files.
The important thing here is that they're willing to work with people that don't have MS office, which is great. And that woman is a moron.
Verizon says it will dispatch a technician to try to assist her accessing the internet without using the Windows-only installation disk.
MATC also says it promises to accept any of Schubert's papers or class documents using whatever software she has installed.
So what's the fucking problem ?!?
sorry to be pedantic, but 'stat' is an abbreviation, not an acronym.

what's this new python IDE you speak of ? The new netbeans implementation ?
why, which years were not?

Surely your amazing prowess is unsurpassed in the known universe.
Women want you, men bow their heads, and all of creation wants to be just like you.
