(Although I hate reading any post preceded by this acronym...) IANAL, but I was speaking from my understanding of Australian copyright law (since that's where I live). I forgot that "fair use" is much more liberal in most other countries. In Australia, fair use almost predates the record player (I know, I exaggerate a little...). Our copyright law is so antiquated as to probably be completely inapplicable today.
I think what he meant by "illegally distribute content" wasn't referring to the means of distribution. What the poster meant might have been illegal in the sense of distributing that specific content without a legal right to do so. There's nothing illegal about a blank CD, but buying that same disc with copied music on it is almost certainly illegal.
Not entirely. Some are capable of playing the levels but without an inventory, others are reverse engineering the inventory, but they don't work quite right. Having the source released under the GPL will mean either better full support in existing engines, or good 1:1 source ports. Likely both.
If I've learned anything from my time on Slashdot, it's that there's a community for everything. No matter how weird or insignificant a software project is, there will be a dedicated community around it.
When I finally get around to writing a will, I'm going to state I want to be buried close to the surface in a transparent coffin, posed as if I were clawing at the coffin to escape. That'll traumatize a few people, and I'll be having a good chuckle in the afterlife.
Yeah, I didn't say I don't believe it, I just meant that they never seem to mention regions that have gotten colder when they're trying to 'educate' the masses.
The climate change proponents will probably try to make a bigger deal out of this than it really is. I take the stance that I'm not educated enough on Earth's climate to have a valid opinion on climate change, but I do find it strange that they never mention the tropics have been colder than usual these past few years. I live in Mackay, Queensland, and this year's winter was probably the coldest I've seen here (though I have only been here eight years).
But why DOWNLOAD it at all? If you've bought a physical copy, you could just make an image and use it in Daemon Tools with SecuROM emulation enabled. Seems like a huge waste of bandwidth to me.
I can, have and currently am going without most of the games I like. Whether or not I get immersed in a game is entirely down to whether or not I want to be immersed in it; assuming, of course, the game is good enough to get immersed in in the first place. I can spend hours or even months playing Civ 4 or Medieval II: Total War if I let myself get immersed. I don't enjoy them if I'm distracted by something else. I've sunk just as much time into Morrowind and Oblivion, and when Fallout 3 finally gets here, people will only see me at meal times, if they're lucky (or unlucky, depending on perspective). I never have been able to get into online games, even when I want to.
You've mentioned an idea for a perfect geek wedding ring on a site entirely populated by geeks. More than a few are going to steal that idea, now:P. I'm more partial to an intricate and meaningful design, rather than the choice of metal. Maybe a pattern of the earliest known human DNA, to symbolize a new beginning?
Well, that's kind of what the Firehose is for, assuming these went through it. People mod up the story they want to read, though I just use it as a way of getting early articles, and mod down the slashvertising and spam.
If you're going to post that, at least have the intestinal fortitude to post with your name. If you won't own up to your comments, then you obviously believe they aren't worth reading; so why bother posting at all?
"at least two languages"? He's burying it for 25 years, not 250! I'm sure the English language (and any other on Earth, for that matter) will still exist in a mostly compatible form 25 years from now!
A very good point. I work in an internet cafe, and everyone - even the manager - is IT staff. If anyone there weren't IT staff, our efficiency would go out the window. I'm just pleased that my first job in IT didn't land me with a Pointy Haired Boss.
I, too, R'd TFA in the hopes of finding out how it works. I'm sure if it's already a patented technology, elaborating on the details couldn't hurt, and I'm really interested in just how they work and how efficient they are per square meter, compared to current conventional solar cells.
Fox is obviously run by knuckle-heads who got a "sports scholarship" at their university of choice, and coasted along with a Communications degree for the sake of actually being a student. Why else would they be trying to ruin everything nerds like us like? They won't let Joss Whedon do another Firefly season, because they still own the rights and don't want to use them, and now they claim to own the rights to Watchmen? And they plan to use them just to prevent a movie?
In reference to a post I made last week: OFFSALRTFS. I'm both hoping and dreading that this acronym will catch on. "Oh For Fuck's Sake At Least Read The Fucking Summary".

Redneck Rampage? Not everyone's thing, but I liked it.
Don't worry, the OFLC is just a little slow. It will be banned, I'm sure.

I was hoping there'd be a boot to the head thrown in there.

Wouldn't that mean the binoculars are only useful in the desert? Nice to see the US is really working hard to get troops out of the middle-east.
If those NES games had been songs, however, he'd be several million dollars in the hole and jailed for two-digit number of years, not months.
Exactly. Without debate and opposition, science is no better than religion.

How will we know who the terrorists are if we can't find out who's buying a chemistry set for his 7 year old son's birthday?

Yeah, I bet the opt-out option will be right at the end of the marketing spiel, long after the target of the advertising has hung up.
