I know public education systems get criticized every time they teach anything that some consider to be a personal/parent choice (sex ed, religion etc). The argument is usually that the parent will teach the kid what they think they need to know and the state/schools should stay out of it.

I think that is complete and utter crap. Who decides what information is important? Say a kid is born to complete atheist parents, God/gods etc don't get mentioned in school so the child will never get exposed to those ideas. At best it slows the kid's exposure and adoption of the beliefs that he/she will chose, at worst it condones ignorance.

We as a society have gone far of course when we teach people that some knowledge shouldn't be taught. It seems contradictory that most of the western countries have a "freedom of religion" clause while at the same time they help enforce bias in the children towards the parents' beliefs. The child truly isn't free if they don't get equal access to information from which to make their own minds up.

I could see this being a cool idea for a rental machine you pick a movie it copies it to a blank thumbdrive and registers the thumbdrives code to a central server. You can then play it on an internet enabled computer/media centre. No more guessing required to figure out how many copies of a movie to keep. This would especially make sense once USB3 is common, they could fire movies on to the thing in a few seconds and as the resolution of movies goes up they'll probably be a larger capacity thumbdrive available that they can use.

Actually it is very easy for IT department heads to justify proprietary software over open software since they only have to point to many Microsoft and so called unbiased web sites that show Microsoft software has a much better Total Cost of Ownership than open software.

They actually might be right too. For example if you have an employ making 50k (relatively average) after benifits, insurance etc the actual cost of the employee is probably closer to 70k.

So you can think of the employees time in front of the computer as worth about one dollar every 3 minutes. It doesn't take many lacking features or experience with a program to quickly eat up the cost of the software. I mean the software is about 600 for Win and Office at my office, it doesn't take that much to justify that expense, especially when field specific software on a machine often goes for 5k or so.

Every woman I've ran into has some concept of how the process will go. Some more than others. Is your girlfriend the type that if you ask her about weddings and honeymoons has strong opinions about the type of dress, number of people, whether in a church or not etc etc? If so then chances are she has an idea of the type of ring she wants too.

Perhaps (if she has a friend that is tactful) see if her friend knows if she'd like it. Having a second person close to her say it is a great idea probably would be good to make sure. She may have discussed more about marriages with her friend (especially if you can find one that she was involved in, as chances are they talked for months about whether they liked the shoes, or the dress etc etc). Anyways extra points for creativity I think it is a great idea, hopefully she's open to it. Good luck :-)

As an expat canadian I wasn't aware of any such law but I was from Ontario perhaps they have a different law in Quebec. Anyways, fair competition only seems to make sense to me. Seems rather odd for a open source software organization to fight this fight though. Unless they represent for profit service companies I don't think they'll be able to prove any loss in court so the case could get thrown out on that grounds. They probably would have been better off getting a bunch of citizens to do a class action as they are ones that have a calculatable loss.

That said even if they loss the case, if it seems plausible to the court it might put the fear of God into the government (in the incarnation of a penguin no doubt) to at least consider open source and be prepared to justify their choosing MS anyways if that is what they do.

P.S. Just a general question why does /. put a space between the second and third paragraph for me not the first and second? I'm using the same flags everywhere else, double "bracketted p". Used to work fine before the new interface came out.

Since you need a certain amount of fat (protects organs, helps balance blood sugar etc), I can't get to my "right" weight without loosing a lot of muscle.
