Humans have also wiped out entire species in prehistoric times. Grapes are tasty. :)

I wish I had mod points, so that I could mod the parent up, because I find the references to be quite interesting.
I once looked at Mozard/oz for distributed virtual environments, because it is used to provide distribution in the DIVE system. I was quite disappointed then, because DIVE was not very scalable. The programming model behind E is much more interesting, from that perspective.

Related things (or things that I think should be):
Octave: A virtual environment where execution of the same code in the same objects is replicated on several nodes. The project is also looking at using capabilities for security (a direction which I applaud). I think that capabilities provides a natural mapping.

Ownership types: It makes encapsulation very tight and forces the programmer to spend more time on the design of its classes and objects.
A possible side-effect could be that the compiler could draw conclusions about memory management at compile-time and make garbage collection process more efficient, but more research is needed to see how large this effect is.

However, what is ultimately needed for distributed environments is if object behaviour more easily could be separated into predictable and side effects so that we could minimize the network communication overhead. I think all the technologies mentioned above could help towards that goal.
