  1. Sourceforge on Hacker Survey · · Score: 5, Interesting

I have started two projects on sourceforge. One was on behalf of my former employer and we released the source code of the whole system under the Jabber PL. The project is still there, but neither I nor my employer is still maintaining it. You could add it to the "Project Cementery" of sourceforge (if they had one).

The second one was just registered a week ago. I have not yet released any files on sourceforge but have done so on my web site. Actually I opened the project just to have a mailing-list.

I spend almost two hours a day in this project, with almost five hours a day on weekends and on vacation. I have even asked for vacations at work just to get more time on the project. It's an open source project, but, even if a would like to have contributors I still have none.

So why do I do it? well thanks to it i just bought my new TV, freezer, laundry machine, DVD and PC. I give my project away for free, but charge for courses, documentation and solutions based on the system. As for today I have only had local customers, but I only hit the web last week.

As for the wife and kids ... well they all are way too happy with the new items at home, you know.

So they support me, I spend some time on my laptop and we all get new toys. Thanks to the LGPL (which is the license of my project and some tools I use within it).

Maybe this is kind of offtopic, but wanted to share it.

The only other option is use something like wxWindows which tries to present a single API that is platform independent but will use native widgets, though this approach has it own problems

I believe this is the most logical option. If you are writing a GUI app then you should use as first option the OS native widgets. If you are writing a multi-os GUI app then use a wrapper for the GUI. Thats the magic about Object Oriented Programming.

Why leave the wxWindows option last? there are other projects like this one, even they could have done something like this instead of creating their own set of widgets and would be a lot easier and nicer.

I dream of the day when us Open Source developers start coding thinking on the user, and not thinking in "ooh, I can do this the easy way or I can do it the hard way, I'll do it the hard way so everyone knows I can".

Anyways, I have a Fujitsu-Siemens C Series laptop bought in Germany a year and a half ago (Celeron 450 Mhz, 192 MB RAM). I still use it as my main computer at home and work running only Linux. I have installed almost every flavor of linux and works perfectly, but lately have only used Mandrake: easy install and autodetects everything, from sound card to video, modem and ethernet card.

Even if it is almost two years old it works like the first day with Mandrake 8.1, KDE 3.0 and Forte & Eclipse (and i have dropped it to the floor twice). I even run JBoss in the background while working with Eorte or Eclipse and it runs perfect. No slowdown. If I were a XP or 2000 user this machine would have gone the trash way a long time ago. God bless linux.

I Must recommend this laptop as one of the bests I have seen, and when I buy a new one next month I'm gonna get a Fujitsu-Siemens.

We all know electric cars have been made in the past and have had no success, but we cannot stop there. There _is_ an environmental problem with normal cars, and any step towards solving it should be supported by anyone who cares about it.

If any car which addresses this problem hits the mainstream (all electric cars are really expensive) I will be buying it, as will be anyone who is worried about our environment. I really dont care if it only gets to 150 Km/h, that's enough for myself, and should be for anybody. Which draws to another issue: why if almost everywhere there's a speed limit, any car you buy can double that speed?

I'll stick with any environmental car that meets my needs, and I can assure you my days will be happier knowing I'm no longer part of the problem. I'm pretty sure there is a _lot_ of people like this out there.

There's an RPM version of apt-get at freshrpms.net [freshrpms.net]. It's for Redhat but I don't see why it wouldn't work for Mandrake.

That's exactly what we shouldn't be doing. Is the RPM package/dependencies list available to the apt packages? is the apt packages list availabe to RPM? Do they use the same notations? Ah, I see, making a RPM version of apt-get solves the problem, because we need more front-ends that hide a poor designed system.

We need to stop for a second and rethink a lot of things, and among them is package distribution for linux. No matter which distribution we use or we make, this is a issue that is comming back to us right now, and if we don't do anything it will get a lot worse in the future.

  18. UnitedLinux is not the solution on Why Mandrake is Too Cool for UnitedLinux · · Score: 5, Interesting

We Linux users know there is a problem with the current linux distributions. It's not only an interoperability problem, but a core one. We have came to a point where we knew we were going to get to, but we haven't tought of a solution because we were making linux ready for the mainstream. Now is the time to solve this, UnitedLinux is a start, but, as many of you, I dont like the approach they took.

We all know all the problems with RPM based distros, compatibility between them breaks a lot, and, even if you should have only one RPM for any distro, when we go to download an application we get a RH6.X.rpm, RH7.rpm, MDK8.rpm, MKD8.1.rpm, etc ...

I'm a Mandrake user, and I love it, but I have seen apt-get working, and I'm really impressed. I think apt-get is the right direction for a real package management tool for all distros. This is the direction package managment under Linux should be taking, and not creating commercial standards without atacking the core of the problem nor creating apt-like solutions or apt-like-frontends for rpm based solutions.

Conclution: LSB + apt-get should be mandatory to be able to call anything a Linux distribution. I know a lot of us would kill for apt-get to be the default package manager in all distributions.
