Well, I personally have spared no abuse on my TiG4 666 DVI (you know, the one with the notorious paint chipping problem) and, like a quality mountain bike, it doesn't feel right to obsess about the paint job.
Yeah, I agree. When it comes to performance that the user feels, delays below about 10 ms are very hard to notice. So if one machine is even quite a bit faster than the other, if most UI tasks take 10ms than subjectively, the user wouldn't really be able to tell. It becomes much more difficult to tell if the computers aren't right next to each other, as well.
My P3 450 runs Tribes2 beautifully, thanks to the GeForece2 that it has. With a gig of ram,.6TB of HD space, and all the fun add-ons it is a nice box.
I now game on my Media Center Edition PC from fucking HP that I won at the state fair. XP is about as responsive on that machine (P4 2.4 gHz) as 98 is on the P3. The GeForce4 absolutely spanks the GF2 on the P3 though.
As long as we're adding, let's add two optical audio ports, serial ATA controller, Firewire 800, bluetooth, and 802.11g. Oh yeah, and video editing software, the full software development kit (NOT the neutered ones) with access to ALL supported languages, and about 9 fans.
I could think up more shit to add, but you couldn't have it. HyperTransport bus, for one. Likely support for dual dual-core processors, for another.
Clue - Sun and Apple are targeting completely different markets.
Apple is aiming right for Sun, and has been eating them alive in biotech for 2 years now. Apple workstations also continue to outstrip any shred of Sun's remaining workstation market, along with Intel boxes. In two years, all Sun may have is their big iron.
It won't be Apple who competes with that. IBM already competes quite nicely with Sun, using a processor 1 generation newer than even the PPC970.
The irony here is apparent. Sun has had a 64 bit platform for a long time, and it never went beyond the Sun niche. Apple's niche is 'some person' and not 'some person with a propellor hat'. IBM invented the propellor hat.
More realistically the Communist sentiment is a manufactured one, relating to the Linux development process and community. It never has been a sensible or realistic way of viewing the community - which is a benign, banana-republic dictatorship more than communism. Some people may have their doubts as to how benign Linux is, but they are mostly trolls. At least he manages to piss off a lot of folks who think their patches deserve to be in the kernel.
The 'Free' market we have here in the US isn't exactly free. When it comes to MS taking the people who do the purchasing out, showering them with gifts, and doing the usual corporate 'bidding (bribing)' on a government contract' thing, of course Linux won't stand a chance. Bills requiring the consideration of open source software make sense on many levels. So would laws banning the gifts in the bidding stage.
Jobs claims he desires a fifteen year life span AT LEAST for OS X. I can see that - Cocoa is extremely portable and powerful. It is also the most natural development environment I have ever used aside from Smalltalk. I would bet that Apple is going to include a host of other features besides what we have seen here today, including upgraded Darwin (probably based off FreeBSD 4.8, maybe even based off FreeBSD 5.0 (or 5.1?) which would be sweet). I would bet that there will be further substantial refinement in speed on exisiting hardware (QE capable anyway) just like we have seen with EVERY UPGRADE of OS X.
All the trolls love stories like this - they can come on over and call us fanboys etc, but Apple is truly kicking ass nowadays. All they have to look forward to is Longhorn, eventually, and with it a possible and probable end to a lot of computer fun. It''s misplaced rage. While they suck the tiny, syphilitic cock of Ballmer they kick out at anything they can. It tastes foul!
I get wary when someone describes DNA as 'crap.' A better way of saying this would be "We haven't figured out what this portion does, but when we do, you can be damn sure it will be patented."
You don't HAVE to call it high-speed. You could call it medium-speed or something. This is the same kind of thinking that started computer companies calling laptops 2" thin rather than 2" thick.
"All the USB specs are going to be called USB 2.0 from now on. So, you should choose USB 2.0 and for anything even remotely important, please choose Firewire. Thank you. I now go off to shoot myself."
You don't see the FDA slamming down on southern producers who label Bullfish as Catsish, why would we unfairly require the vietnamese to make a distinction between their not-quite catfish and our not-quite catfish?
An SEC investigation would be very apropriate here, but would only happen after the fact, sadly.
SEC investigations are extremely dickless. There are thousands of mediations by the SEC where the mediation board was tainted by people also working for the stock issuing company being mediated against! Talk about a conflict of interest...
I don't think cash is the answer. Open source developers make such great stuff because they love their work, not because of cash. Many developers make a deal with their usere like this: I'll develop WidgetLib, and take it in the direction that I want, but if you need a feature and can't code it yourself I'll work on it if you pay me.
I think thqat there is a potential for a balance, as long as it doesn't feel like a job to the developer. Perhaps just being able to have fun and code is more rewarding than coding for cash, and having a team of people living off your work.
Stereotype actions. I can see that as you take animals with wide ranges / rich social lives out of their purview in cage 'em up, they need to vent their desires for interaction / stimulation / etc.
IMHO, the Minnesota Zoo is better than most I have been to. Big animals have many acres to roam in, the siberian tiger encloure is enormous. Most days you don't even see 'em. In the summer hoewver, they sit by the huge Plexiglass window and watch the children bathe in the fountain.
The Henry Doorly Zoo (Omaha) is embarassing, however. No animal has more than a half acre, and their apes and big cats are confined to 20x20 enclosures. The gorillas were especially sad. The women and young were engaded in eating, and were obviously comfortable with the squealing crowd of onlookers. The silverback, however, was just sitting behind a drum cradling his head in his hands, and at one point the crowd thinned, and he looked at me and kind of shrugged, and then wen back to his obviously depressed state. There were shitloads of roaches.
Yes, I don't like it any more than you do. It has been possible to patent an organism for many years here in the US.

Oh well! Jeezus, are you off-roading with your mac, and taking it to fashin shows afterwards or something?

A tram is a streetcar or small train. They are a popular and efficient public transport in some of the more responsible parts of the world.

Unless, of course, you are viewing a demo of a Microsoft product in court...
Neither of these 'problems' occur when you use a UFS formatted drive.

They should have simplified it by saying...
"All the USB specs are going to be called USB 2.0 from now on. So, you should choose USB 2.0 and for anything even remotely important, please choose Firewire. Thank you. I now go off to shoot myself."
[applause]
You forgot the now-removed Faster than Light

Huh?
What, like the sleep() function call?

Yep. Depending on the environment, portablilty is either designed in or effortless (Smalltalk, specifically Squeak!).
To me, the logical conclusion is for somebody to invent a 'tracker-less' deriviative of Bittorrent.

Roughly 4 PM, about a month and a half ago. I am going back next week to see if any of the other animals are doing this strange stuff.
