Anyone else read Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn Trilogy? The first book is available from amazon and is definately in my top 10.

It contains a lot of stuff about getting computers fitted inside your head that interact both with your brain and wirelessly with other computers; they enable people to do such wonderful things as switching off pain, and instant messaging. Definately worth a look if you're interested in this field, and a thoroughly enjoyable universe to experience too :)

Thanks for the advice, I'll remember it. I visited Newcastle a couple of months ago; my cousin studies Law there. It seems like a really nice place, just a bit of a pain to get to from Wales ;) Same goes for Edinburgh really so I suppose it's more likely that I'll end up at UMIST.

Right, time to do some revision; 23 hours to go until the exam!

Holyhead High School in Anglesey, and Coleg Menai , both of which are in Wales, UK. I will attend University at either Edinburgh or UMIST, assuming I get some sleep tonight and do some work tomorrow. Hmm mod_rewrite has captured my attention.

I suppose it would be prudent to point out that I do not assume to be intelligent beyond all others (just the majority), and am well aware that if I am to succeed and live a reasonable life then compromise is really the only door open to me. What would have been more prudent would have been to put this in my original comment ;)

Not to self obsessed, but I can relate to everything you said and to other people's comments. And even to the linked INTP piece amusingly enough. I am now 21 having screwed about after school and on my 3rd (and final) attempt at finishing my A-Levels and entering University (UK system).

I dropped out a couple of times (having completed half the course with moderate success) due to a complete lack of interest, though I have to say that the alternatives are even more dull than you think education is right now; I worked in a factory pressing metal into pieces used to assemble climbing frames and suchlike for a few months. The intense hatred I felt for everyone working in that factory still makes me insane thinking about it 2 years later. Working all day doing an exhausting job with people so far beneath you in intellectual terms is really infuriating. It's not healthy to find that you can muster that much hatred so I strongly advise against opting for it.

Although I find the work I'm back doing now rather easy I find it very hard to concentrate enough to achieve 'A' grades. For some strange reason I found myself spending today implementing a filesystem with PHP/MySQL just as a small but slightly interesting challenge, rather than spending the day working for the exam I have on monday that could easily dictate my future. Despite the object being relatively pointless and easily written some other time I just couldn't get together the motivation to revise.

It's slightly comforting to find that there are plenty of others like me out there. I really can't wait to read the majority of Slashdot comments either passing you off as somebody who dreams of genius, or merely displaying their annoyance that they have to work damn hard to achieve most of what you can do very easily (should you desire - always the awkward part!). I receive that kind of attention on occaision and have come to find it more amusing than anything - I hope you find it similarly invigourating!

So my advise is this: Stick with education, at least you're not surrounded by so many idiots that way.

Incidentally I'm quite interested in talking to people who relate to either the original post, or this one. I'm sure you can figure out how to contact me should you wish to.

I agree that it's more subtle than Friends, but that is really no great achievement. The Office just doesn't appeal to me, but that wasn't why I replied; the immediate presumption that anyone who doesn't find it funny must not 'get it' because of it's 'subtlety' is something I find laughable when comparing it to the majority of British comedy around right now.

In my opinion the humour used in The Office is narrowly applicable to a British audience and needs modification for specific regions in order to maintain it's appeal (which is backed up by the modifications they are making before a US release), therefore the attempted aspersion of "you must be American haha they're all stupid" is simply moronic for more than one reason.

  9. Re:No. on Hitchhiker's Guide Film Reports · · Score: 1

Generally I think that British comedy is better than the American offerings I've seen, but there are exceptions, especially in cases where people claim that programs like The Office is "subtle" - excuse me? Subtle? The idiot that replied to you assuming you're American is typical of a new breed of Brit, one that is in fact quite difficult to discern from the Americans he mocks.

The Office is being remade for an American audience with little modification to the 'feel' but using American actors and running jokes that will be more recognisable and lead to the the "hahaha I know someone who does that!" 'comedy' that sells the program.

Needless to say I don't find humour like that funny, perhaps you would if it was remade specifically for a Mexican audience, but seriously, it's amusing for a span of only one episode and then it's just garishly predictable.

I'm sorry, you seem to have misunderstood my meaning, so I'll rephrase and elaborate.

I couldn't help but laugh that you expressed yourself in such a way that implied the US were the innocent party. As you're among this set of informed people you speak of, I'm sure you'll be aware that there are a massive raft of opinions and facts that cloud the issue of who 'started' this 'war.' I put quotes around those as I personally have severe doubts that a clear sentence of guilt of having 'started' it could be given to any party, and because the 'war' on terror seems to aid the American oil business more than it counters known terrorist financiers.

Apparently you have the advantage in years, but unless you did completely misunderstand my comment, you have a severe disadvantage in an oversimplified idea of world events. I am guilty of ignorance, arrogance and apathy to a point, probably not so afflicted by ideology, but certainly none of those accusations apply to the level you arrogantly and ignorantly imagine.

Well, here is a hint, lad: knowing PHP doesn't give you any insights into terrorism or world events, and you could use a few.

This comment amused me even more, gosh, isn't this fun!

I decided to boot windows, install the newest iTunes and connect my 5GB (FAT32) iPod. I played some mp3s via iTunes and unplugged it. I held my breath. It still works just fine, none of this 0s playback. As for the whole "Apple doesn't support Mac Pods on Win" rubbish; this seems to be an iTunes issue since as far as I've read nobody has complained that Ephpod screwed their pod up. Therefore I believe this is their problem which they should investigate - if it turns out to be "windows gaying up firewire" then fair enough, but until they know the cause - it's Apple's problem.
