"I always thought the Internet would make wars awfully awkward, since you could be in direct, person-to-person contact with the civilians on the other side."
Reminds me of a common thought in the beginning of the 20th century. When aeroplanes were invented, there was the opinion that since everthing would be scoutable from the air, there would be no secrets since every troopmovement would be detected very easily. There would be no secrets and war would be impossible. That hope was crushed very quick I would imagine since war didn't stop and even became more dangerous to civilians(city bombing).
In a real war between equals, internet contact(and all other contact for that matter) between those countries would be immediatly cut off as far as it can be cut off. Sure, you can use proxies and the sort but only a select few would be able to subvert the "firewall". Every time a new way of evading the firewall becomes popular, goverments will try to block it and it will be enough to stop 90%+ of the people coming in contact with people on the other side.
"For example, if the UN had control right now they would probably already have taken North Korea off the internet, along several other "undesirable" countries."
No, they wouldn't. The UN is like a game of chess in the position of a stalement. And vote that has severe negative ramification for one country is most likely vetoed by the UN security council thus creating international powerblocks. For example, North Korea is under the umbrella of big brother China who will veto any negative resolution about NK, you can check the books on that.
"Notice that despite the political climate, the US has not used DNS to take action against Iraq, Iran, China, North Korea, or any other country."
Well duh. "Disconnecting" other countries has no significant advantage in these cases since other countries either tiny in comparison(Iraq), touchy(Iran with possible nukes) and juggernauts themselves(China). With that comes the fact that if the US would ever try such a thing, the internet would most likely fork because of the (justified) fear of total US control over the internet.
It's like the powers of Queen Elizabeth II. Sure, she has a lot of powers but the second she would try to use them, all hell would break lose.
True. Pong is a pseudo-documentary in the form of a videogame about two people who are absolutely obsessed by tennis. Quite a sad story really.
Every time I play the game I get a little bit teary eyed remembering the tragic fate of the two players. But thankfully we can the wise decision. Do not get absorbed by tennis, it can kill!
"that's the thing about inconvenient truths, they're inconvenient, you can't turn them off, even of you ignore them they don't go away...."
Yes, but he was talking about "An inconvenient truth", not an inconvenient truth. You know when the media wants to accuse somebody of taking bribes they say "John Doe took bribes" within quotes and not plain , John Doe took bribes. You can manipulate and get away with the first, with the second you can quickly get slapped with a lawsuit.
"When a society makes other people responsible for your safety when you're doing something you're not supposed to do, it has failed..."
Tresspassers have no rights Terrorists have no rights People who we think are terrorists have no rights Let's open Gitmo.
The fact that people are doing something they are not supposed to do, does NOT give you a carte blanche. It doesn't.
If a burglar breaks his hip by tripping over a skateboard in the dark can not be construed as your fault since your intentions were not malicious and the place was safe when entered in a normal situation(lit chamber). However, if you transform your house into a deathtrap each night and somebody falls into a pit with spikes(think Prince of Persia;) ), you can be considered responsible since you knew that something like that would happen and the trespasser had no idea.
"As it has always been said: If you use Red Hat, you learn Red Hat. If you use Ubuntu, you learn Ubuntu. If you use Slackware, you learn linux."
That's ok. I just want a functional OS. I do not like messing with config files if a simple checkbox works the same way. I'm willing to whatever is neccesairy to make my box run smoothly but if I can do it in an easy, simple way with a GUI-enviroment I won't take the hard way and mess with text-files in bash with vim/emacs/nano/ed/I'msorryIforgotyourtexteditor.
That's why I chose Ubuntu since they care about making my pc easier to use. I've used it from 6.06 onward and the manual text-editing has slowly but steadily been driven to the background to my relief.
In 6.06 I had to manually edit my fstab file to allow writeable ntfs partitions. Now I can simply use the default config supplied with no hassle.
Everybody likes to use his OS for his own reasons. Some people like to learn how it works, some people like to fiddle around and some people like to play minesweeper and stupid internet flash games. All of these people should be able to use one of the different OSes running the linux kernel.
Sure, use Slackware, use Fedora, use SuSe, use Ubuntu. Let all people choose the version they want for their personal reasons.
Protecting the borders in the invasion sense, not the smuggling sense. The few countries that watch their border with soldiers are afraid of an enemy invasion(like North Korea and probably hotbeds like India/Pakistan, Iran/Iraq etc.)

" The question is, are they wrong? Ubuntu really has remained for Linux hobbyists. Maybe it shouldn't be that way, but it is, for the most part."
Yes, yes they are. The article's name is "Top 10 most disappointing technologies". Maybe the marketshare of Ubuntu has somewhat lagged behind what people hoped for, Ubuntu's tech itself is great and its improvements from release to release are worth the pain of switching to a newer OS. The fact that MS is holding the market hostage with Windows(and it's gigantuan legacy heap) can hardly be described as a fault of Ubuntu.
1. night 2. near total silence 3. no other people awake in the vicinity
I have found that these three help me to focus on my task and nothing else. No distractions, no obligations to anyone and the silent hum of my pc help me to focus on my goal, whatever it might be.
This is fully personal however and other people may find this the most displeasent way to be productive. This might not be the ideal situation for me but I feel very comfortable and it can be reached quite easily once a day.
If these conditions are fulfilled and I am devoted to my task I can get some good work done. My problem is that I need to reach a certain waypoint in my work or else I can have a sleepless night thinking about how to finish it.
"Unreal Tournament is about fighting, in a war. Any game that has teams, and guns, is likely fighting.. in a war."
War is not combat. Unreal Tournament is fighting for fun or some other strange reason because there is no indication of conflict.
A war is state two entities are in(most of the time nations) in which they try to accomplish their goals with certain forms of assault. This can include violence but might well be a proxy and/or political fight like the Cold War. The games you like to play are NOT war games. They are taylored combat-games. No civilians, no white-flags, no human(raging monsters) enemies. No dispair in the eyes of a soldier. No suicide, no friendly fire(except for you if you suck;) ), no PTSS, no deserters, no (serious) discussions about the end of conflict. No atrocities, no collaboration for any reason. No cowardice, no jokes about your own political leaders, no real hate. Nothing of the kind. And you know why not? That game would probably suck as there is no fun. It is the pure grittyness of war. Some people losing their sanity over the course of their killings, seeing the people you become friends with die in an instant, or worse, even a slow painful death, making you think about the correctness of the war and if it is worth risking your life for.
THAT is war. Simply taking your gun and shoot some gooks/jerries/towelheads/dehumanizing term is not war, it's entertainment.

Contrary to what you might think, freedom of speech is not black and white/all or nothing.
You can't shout fire in a theater if there is no fire, does that mean that there is no freedom of speech in the US? In no country in the world are you allowed to say anything you want and not receive any punishment, does that mean that freedom of speech is non-existent? If that is the case, what are you wining about?

Catfish are toxic. Apparently they have such toxicity that they burn of your fingerprints if you handle enough of them.
I have fought for the classification of bitterness into the mental illnesses several decades ago but people laughed at me. Still bitter about it.
Yet you forgot one factor. Nutjobs.
Well, that doesn't make it any less refuckingtarded

Yes, you can slipstream them into the CD but so far that has proved to be too much of a hassle.(secretly awaits any tips on easy slipstreaming)
