You don't think massive corporations suing single moms is demonic behavior?
Not if they have evidence that said single moms have broken the law. They could be 95-year-old great-great-grandmothers, but if they broke the law, they're a valid lawsuit target.
Note that I'm not arguing whether the law is correct or not, just that you said a very ignorant comment.
You say that like it's a bad thing. Everyone working for the sake of everyone, right? How is that bad?
People have such a negative image of communism. I'll be the first to admit that in practice, it fails horribly due to human nature, but as a concept, it's great.
The thesis of the article is that rank-and-file employees will tend to engage in dangerous/insecure/irresponsible computing and internet behavior if they know that there's an IT department to clean up the mess.
This is assuming, of course, that the IT department is very lax on their users. Besides the fact that the users should be locked down to the point where irresponsible computing isn't as much of an issue, IT shouldn't be just allowing this behaviour to continue. Mindlessly cleaning things up without trying to change them is the problem, not having the department.
If you get punched in the face every time you drop a cigarrette butt on the ground, you're going to stop dropping them. The same principle should apply here. Punish the user for bad behavior, and they'll eventually stop.
It's a bit different. With "hackers", a lot of the time they're just there to explore and maybe cause a little mischief - it's not anywhere near on the scale of the other examples you have. Also, other fields remain very static, but with computer security new exploits are coming out every day, and you know that this person knows how to find and use them, hopefully before they're used on you.
Just when you thought the world was safe, evil and evil unite. Been nice knowing you guys. I'm off to read "revelations" to see what's about to go down.
Considering that a HUGE amount of money gets put into research and making/updating the facilities to manufacture these processors, the actual costs are much higher.
Not to mention they have to pay salaries, benefits, etc...
Who's more likely to be called "dumb" these days, the guy that can use an abacus but can't find the windows calculator or the guy that has never seen an abacus, but can solve differential equations with the push of a button?
The guy who knows how to do BOTH is the clear winner. I'm not against technology by any means. What I AM against is people using it as a reason not to learn basic things in life. Even in my high-level calculus classes, people still couldn't add triple-digit numbers in their head and had to rely on their calculators.
The thing about relying on technology is that someday you'll have to perform a task with the technology not readily available, and then you'll be SOL. Technology should enhance your knowledge, not replace it.
I hope this new interface is optional. Part of the reason I've been using Yahoo Mail for so long was BECAUSE of its very simple and straightforward interface. Taking that away removes yet another reason to stay with them instead of finally letting go.
Agreed! We already have the problem of people not knowing how to spell (reliance on spellchecking) and people not being able to do basic math (reliance on calculators) - this would just dumb people down even more.
Just because we can build tools doesn't mean we ALWAYS have to use them - or that we can forget (or never learn) how to do things without them!
Okay, I can type (quite well) without looking at the keyboard, but I'll be damned if I can remember which key is "scroll lock", which is "print screen", and which is "pause/break". And where's that pipe again? Accent mark?
Why should it matter, anyway? As long as gameplay isn't sacrificed because of the new look, I'm fine with it. Let them do what they want with the graphics as long as the game is still fun.

as well as a decrease in the albedo of a large land mass
:(
Which means no more little land masses
Oh, you said albedo. Never mind.

If Microsoft wants me to switch, they had better come out with something truly special rather than simply aping the rest of the industry.
This is a typo. He actually meant to say "raping the rest of the industry."

Seriously! The way they were pushing that damn movie, you'd have thought it starred Jesus himself.
It's just that everyone looked at it, said "meh", and moved on.
Kickass, guess all these loud fans in my case have a dual-purpose now!
Heck, with numbers like that it seems like Linux could run circles around XP Pro for audio/video apps such as streaming, recording, and playback!"
You say that like it's a hard mark to hit.
You're thinking too narrowly - not all life has to be carbon-based, mostly water, and oxygen-breathing.
Methane? Ah ha, I've got it!
Cows are really aliens from Titan sent to observe us. The methane they, uh, "give off" is just a little air leak in their otherwise-perfect disguises.
Or a Eunich
I was led to believe there was a lot of discussion about eunuchs on this site. I still don't know that linuchs are, though.

Form over function is never positive.
Not necessarily surprising, given that many articles are split between pages and each screenshot is a new page load.
Remember how audiences reacted to the movie "Final Fantasy"?
IIRC, everyone I remember talking to about it said "the graphics were great, but the plot and characters were shallow and undeveloped."
Why should it matter, anyway? As long as gameplay isn't sacrificed because of the new look, I'm fine with it. Let them do what they want with the graphics as long as the game is still fun.
So I get called a Troll, for saying to a guy who is call all relegious people stupid, dont be so anti.
Oh calm down, I was just fighting troll with troll.
200 years ago, most of the USA was filled with people who could not read or write ... And they believed in GOD.
Exactly. The uneducated, stupid people believed in god. You put it perfectly.
Depends on how you look at it.
Viewpoint 1: Will people buy a PS3 because it can play Blu-Ray discs? Maybe, maybe not. This is a gamble.
Viewpoint 2: People WILL buy a PS3 anyway, and therefore be more likely to buy Blu-Ray discs. This is pretty much a given.
