All this stuff about linux distros has me on the mind about evolution. All these little critters running around trying to get a foot-hold. some of them are bound to not make the evolutionary steppes, or get squashed by something begger climbing them. We evolved from lizards ga-zillions of years ago, the SuSe lizard will have to do the same if it plans on surviving.
My personal pull is with the same spiral motion that is the formative energy for most everything else. <insert Debian logo here>
I think some of the best FMV cut scenes i've seen used are actually in the Odd World series. THough it is not a fast paced action-ish kind of game the same basic philosophy they've used for doing FMV transitions still hold well.
For anyone out there doing video game design (especially where you think you'll be doing work with Full Motion Video) I highly recommend that you go out and pick up the games in the Odd World series to get a good perspective on how FMV cut scenes can be done well.
this isn't a warning knell, this is stupidity. Libraries are a basic functioning piece of our country (U.S.), in what few pristine areas of 'original implementation' that exist. Blocking books from library usage is digging into the depths of corporate clout that until recently was only the domain of Coca-Cola schemes
The first miniseries was really botched, i mean, they don't even delve into the religious importence of the spice, nor it's wei as a narcotic. The point of the worms interaction with them is mispresented and the weirding modules are completely ignored (this was amongst the things that made House Atreides as strong as it was).
The scenery is also poorly presented; there is no show of water conservation in the mini-series, even among the fremen. Frank Herbert was [practically, at min.] an Ecologist - and the mini-series gave absolutely no attention to this spirit.
There's more, but if you care enough by now there's plenty of sites with more info (or i'm preaching to the converted). The new series will get eaten up - just as the last one did - but that doesn't mean it will be any better. Harrison should do himself a favor and hire an (eclectic) Ecologist or at least a well-schooled historian of some religious venue.
"something that couldn't have been done pre-net era?" - how about the Equisite Corpse of the Dada movement? how about the exact operation that's described in the article (each artist making their own tile) but in the absence of making it on computers. Above it's even called a 'mosaic' - where do you think the word came from, the MacPaint instruction manual?

not that i want to promote the movie Little Licky that much, but on the DVD there's a hidden menu where you can get a halo to appear about his Sandler's head like a Ring - and there's a trailer there for the LOTR movies. watching it on DVD is amazing. you have ot get to the menu option right next to his head and then press left.
Now, many creationists will say that most of that clay was deposited much faster during the supposed Flood.
Not being the creationist at the other end of your sword i still think i ought to point out that there's a fairly large bit of scientific evidence to show that there really was a large oceanic swelling that coincides with glacial movements and 'ice age' cycles. You can thump your Geology book just as well as others can thump their bibles, but you at least ought to read it now and then
Let them reap the consequences of choosing a lame dev shop, and perhaps next time they will choose you instead, having learned their lesson
there is no next time, really, though. companies often go with their current solutions developer regardless of how bad they are screwing up and the reason is predictability. it often doesn't matter how good the hired company is, so long as their ETAs are accurate and predictable. It's only in the face of gross incompetence that developers are nixed, and that's not too often (we'd like to think =)
If the client is at massive riska dn your business is security then dealing with these problems should be something that you dont' ignore just becasue you lost a contract. You might want to pick one particular example of their lacking security issue and point it out to them as well as some of the important details. if the problem is fixed in a week and you still haven't heard back from them they're obviously not interested in going with you; let them fend off the sharks themselves. If they're smart they'll realize whose the better pony and get back to you.

So can anyone elaborate (intellegently) on how all of these theories of Dark Energy/Dark Matter/negative gravity/etc are different from previously conceived notions of Ether and/or Orgone?
i'm not sure if anyone will care enough to mod this up, but AOL/TimeWarner screwed up the DVD version of this in their buyout/re-release of it from the older MGM edition. the new edition is 1.85:1 aspect ratio, as compared to the older, original 2.35:1 aspect ration. Intrepid fans may want to search your local used movie dealer....
Porn sites have been doing this (and/or similar) for a while. Click on a link, have an intermediary page come up with banners/etc, click on another link to go to the page you trying to get to. links embedded in flash animations force the surfer to wait until the flash animation finishes to go on.
Actually, most technology uses start in the porn industry. Consider the multi-angle view capability possible with DVDs. No one's used it, right? Wrong: All Star. I'm pretty sure streaming video started here too.
so what's your music preferences, Backstreet boys? 3/4 of the time i use napster it's to get rare vinyl presses that you can't get here in the U.S. because our rave-scene is candy-assed compared to Europe.
do you listen to anything that only comes out on vinyl or magnetic tape? have you ever tried to play a CD loudly with a 600W amp? maybe you just don't have a wide enough variety of tastes, but there is a fair bit of musics which are really only able to be found (easily) on napster b/c ppl share their obscure shit.
there are wonderful point as to why these segments are probably smaller than most other use on napster, but to disregard those little communities....
We had a system where i went to college where students could get get involved in Computing Services and perhaps even work with some of the engineers in writing software for the computer clusters. Problem was the system was pretty smoke-and-mirrors. There were lots of ambitious CS students who wanted to write apps and such, but if you really tried to make something that would be useful you got lead around in circles since half of the students were as smart as the admins there was always the worry of security holes and just general (reasonable) worries about poor procedures allowing for security holes. The administration was also very careful of retaining complete control. If they let anyone know enough about how the system worked to could, intentionally or not, be abused.
In the end anyone it seemed to boil down to two scenarios: you got so discouraged by self-righeous administration you stopped trying to help - or you got groomed for graduation to a position in the official/ordained programming clique that made the real changes.
but i'm willing to cede that i may have just had a bad experience....
well, we dont' have much room to play with the year (2001), and out month is pretty well set (3), however, through simple deduction we can compute the remaining information:
Since the bringing down of Mir is clearly the result of satanic forces, the day will be the 18th (6+6+6). which also computes with the month (3*6=18)
it will occur at the 05 hour (Hail Eris!), on the 23rd minute; since Mirs touchdown will clearly be one of teh largest acts of a Discord(ian) nature in a while.
and it will occur on the 59th second because, as well all know, 23 = 59 (especially issultrated through the law of fives, exemplified by the hour, in this case)
i'm not a bigot or hoomophobic - i jsut think the Cingular ads were all rather homosexually suggestive. Or maybe it's just kind of a rorschach test..... =P

I'll point out that many people (such as a company that i have worked with) doesn't read their admin mail at all.
