    Dipshits.

  2. Re:First thing... on Getting Started With Part-Time Development Work? · · Score: 1

You DO NOT need to incorporate. Of course there are benefits to doing so. Mostly just in protecting your personal assets. Many judges are even poking holes in this because so many people are incorporating simply for the protection. You can write off all of the same business taxes as a sole proprietor that you can as a corporation. Either way, they have to be business expenses.

For example...say I bill out and collect $100K a year. I pay myself a reasonable salary of say, $40K (some go lower than this). Now, I only have to pay SS and medicare on that $40K....the rest of the $60K is only subject to state/federal taxes.

It's important to note that you can't spend any of that $60k on personal expenses unless you "pay" it from your corporation to yourself. In which case you DO have to pay all applicable taxes and whatnot.

In summary...Take tax and business advice on Slashdot with a grain of salt. Write it down and take it to your actual professional lawyer, accountant, priest, etc... and get their advice. Those are expenses you must plan for if you'll be starting your own business.

My theory is that ADHD is an evolutionary response to the information age. With so much emphasis placed on "multi-tasking", and so many sources of mental stimulation, our minds are finally beginning to speed up. Unfortunately, those who haven't evolved to have ADHD can't handle the added need to stimulus and think those that have it are "disruptive". So give them medicine and make them "normal" like the rest of us. (ie. Bring them down to a level of activity that is comfortable for us.) If we want evolution to slow, this is exactly how to do it. Treat all differences as negatives. If you have a special ability(?) we cut you down so you don't disrupt society's precious norms.

Again, it all comes down to the situation of the person working at home. Be they a telecommuter or a home business owner.

I'm lucky to have converted part of my unfinished basement into my office. It's the "cold room" or "cold cellar" of my house: Under the front porch, outside of the main foundation, with a big wooden door.

Anyway, being that it's in the basement where nobody goes, AND it has a big door with a deadbolt (new addition), it's a complete separation from my home life. Once I'm down there, I might as well be at work, because no one comes down to the basement, let alone into my office.

I think the problem with distractions occurs because people have their offices in their kitchen or even worse, in the corner of the living room.

Ditto. Although we used developers from another country. It seems that US companies are outsourcing because it's the popular thing to do. Our outsourced "developers" cost the same or MORE than US ones. Add in the communication issues such as time, culture, and language, and I don't understand what my company was thinking. Eventually, our outsourcing was also scrapped in favor of redoing the project in-house. This decision had mostly to do with the fact that what they sent technically worked, but there were no standards or best practices. Everything was just hacked in on the fly and I basically had to rewrite everything as it came in anyway. Even though they "already did QA." Right.

I think this is great exposure for Linux. I have Ubuntu running on a spare laptop, and it's perfect for getting online, checking email, blogging, etc... With so many online apps these days, it's getting less important what operating system you use. Obviously us "power users" have our outrageous requirements, but the average user just wants to get online and play some games. Also, I don't want to downplay Linux by saying it's only for average users. It CAN compete with Windows, but it needs this kind of widespread recognition before the mainstream users will give it a chance. I just hope BestBuy makes it very apparent that this is an OS. I read on a forum somewhere (maybe /.?) that someone was upset that their Ubuntu game didn't work, and it changed their desktop. I can totally see this happening to many an average user.

He doesn't need to program to be a good manager. If he has a firm understanding of enterprise development, and is not entirely socially backward, he might make a fine manager. He needs to have an understanding of programming, which I assume he would have received during his quest for a CS degree. HOWEVER, I don't think a fresh graduate is ready for managing a development team. There are so many quirks involved with managing anyone that he should get some experience as a peon (no offense) before trying to be a manager. Start at the help desk and go with the flow from there. Get to know people. Being in the help desk can really get you in front of a lot of people. Be friendly, and network (with people) like crazy. As you work, you'll begin to identify things you like/don't like about what you're doing. As opportunities present themselves, continue climbing the ladder. A degree doesn't buy a career. You still have to start at the bottom. Don't let this put you off though. I've technically only been in I.T. for 4 years. I don't have a degree, and I'm making very good money as a project manager. Given what we know about you, (Only that you have a CS degree and don't like to program.), I think everyone's advice of finding something you like to do is about the best we can do. As for salary, it depends on location among other things. I.T. generally pays higher than other "office jobs", but it really depends. Wow, this was a bit long-winded, but I hope it helps. - Jason
