If you've looked at a retail computer in the last 3 years, you'd know that setups like mine are equivalent to your current budget offering ($450 to $800).
Of course, nobody in their right mind would recommend installing Vista on a system 3 years old or more. That would be silly.
...On the other hand, there are plenty of people who can't tell the difference between something being "a piece of crap" and "not to my tastes". Maybe I put too much faith in your average human being.
Vista runs fine on my Athlon X2 4200+ with 2 gigs of ddr. Hardly what I'd call 'quantum core massively parallel'. Go cry in a corner now, I won't judge.
Of course. The people who appreciate music, even in my generation, have always paid for it, even when piracy was easier; it's the preppies who have no qualms about stealing their bubblegum pop. And why should they when they have to listen to such crap?
The way I see it, if real musicians (ala NiN and Radiohead) move over to this model, and at least make money from all of the people who actually care about their music (and probably more money overall than on the old system), and all of the Britney Spears and Kanye Wests of the world stick with the old business that nobody has any qualms about killing, then in the end only the good music will remain, for the most part.
Because if you think about it, there are legions of fans who will gladly buy NiN. The other crap is the part of the industry that's hemorrhaging money right now.
Yes, I know English very well, thank you. I speak it, read it, and write it every day. That's the problem; my native language is not the same as the poster's.
I'm not saying flexibility is bad, but KDE never seems to be configured in a way I can make use of by default, and I'm not willing to sort through all of the crap to configure it.
Look, it's really very simple. Slow file transfers are there (Pre-SP1). I also don't care. So I'm a happy little boy and, and you're the poor cynical nerd who never gets laid.
Luckily for me, things I don't care about also extend to your unfortunate situation. Bye bye!
I didn't realize answering a question with a perfectly legitimate answer qualified as "making excuses to justify" my choices. I am perfectly fine with the choices I've made, both with Linux and Vista.
What's a little more sad is the person who says "Slow file transfers? How can you possibly not care about slow file transfers!? I knew it! Vista sucks! Windows users don't know anything! No one can possibly go on with slow file transfers! And if you disagree with me, you're just trying to justify your choice! YOU'RE NOT A REAL GEEK! DADDY DIDN'T LOVE ME!"
Believe me, I would like for nothing more than for a superior open source office suite to emerge. But so far that has yet to happen; OpenOffice.org is a cheap copy of Office 2003 at its best, and a slow, bloated, buggy piece of junk at its worst. On Linux it's fine, but I always get annoyed with it on windows.
I'm willing to believe that Microsoft bullied its way into making Office the standard office suite, but the fact is that currently, nothing really even approaches it in functionality. It's a very sad situation.
You sound unwilling to consider that you or anyone your age might be mistreating, overworking, or underpaying anyone working under you. You seem to be hiding behind this illusion that your whole generation is benevolent and infallible. Then again, maybe that is the problem some of us have with your generation.
Believe it or not, it's entirely possible to deal with a mission non-critical problem by patiently waiting for a patch rather than bitching across the internet. A bit of slow file transferring isn't enough for most people to justify, or even WANT, to format and install an alternative operating system with its own share of problems.
(For the record, running Vista w/ Prerelease SP1, dual-booting with Debian Lenny)

All of the replies are always strictly on topic and accurate about technological issues.
Is this bizarro world?Vista runs fine on my Athlon X2 4200+ with 2 gigs of ddr. Hardly what I'd call 'quantum core massively parallel'. Go cry in a corner now, I won't judge.

What the hell are you talking about?

Dude, you post this link in every article, but you are not funny. Please stop.
Even if that is true, what the hell does that have to do with the topic?
That's a really convenient way to avoid presenting any evidence.

You're right. SP1 hasn't fixed any of my problems with Vista. All 0 of them are completely unaffected. :-P
I'm not saying flexibility is bad, but KDE never seems to be configured in a way I can make use of by default, and I'm not willing to sort through all of the crap to configure it.
I'm sure that rant would be inspiring and eloquent if I could understand a word of it.
Ooor maybe they just want to have a default that's useable already instead of requiring you to play with it?
This has been my problem with KDE in the past; too much crap to sort through.

Er... moving on.
Or maybe the product is just really really good?

Ok, how about this: Slow file transfer was there, but he didn't care, so it wasn't a problem for him. Understand that?
I didn't realize a single one of "these kids" that you worked with was half of "these kids". He must be a pretty big "these kids".

What do you mean? You asked how his experience could be trouble-free with a file transfer speed issue, and I answered your question.

Don't you mean it actually wins on 1) Sucking, meaning that it sucks the most?
