Reporting from Germany. Straight after the university (tuition = zero) I got a job with 29 vacation days (28 regular + one extra on Christmas). Sick days? Not sure, I need a doctors notice for anything more than 3 days and my employer is obliged to pay up to 30 days in hospital. Plus, I have medical insurance as does everyone around here.
Oh, and I am forbidden to work for more than 10 hours a day.
On the other hand you probably earn more and pay less taxes. Happy spending:-)
From the previous story: "South Koreans are by far the heaviest drinkers in Asia and the biggest consumers of spirits in the world, according to the World Health Organization." South Koreans, not the North ones!
It is the same with every operating system and unsupported hardware. A few months ago, I was struggling with XP and an integrated broadcom wireless on my grandpas laptop to no avail even though it is an XP-era laptop. Linux Mint, on the other hand, worked like a charm (my grandpa did not have any particular problems with switching, by the way).
For Microsoft, it is still better when people use pirated copy of Windows rather than legal Linux. People that build their own PCs are the ones with the clue so they are harder to keep with Windows. Therefore it makes sense for Microsoft to make copy protections just right -- hard enough for clueless, but trivial for more advanced users.
Remember, they got over 90% of, say, Chinese or CIS markets without spending a dime on advertisement -- the pirates were doing all the hard work. Now MS can get their profits off governments and companies because of that market share.
Where I work it is by all means forbidden to work more than 10 hours a day -- the rule is that you are not capable to drive after having worked for that long. So the company has to pay for the transport costs. There is no law against overworking and they can't fire you for that but you'll have a serious talk with the manager if you do. And I work as a software engineer, not a mine worker.
Amen. Couldn't have made it through German University otherwise: I am of no German origin and my parents are poor by German standards (hence their help was limited). I was already in a need to work for a living while studying and wouldn't be able to pay additional money for the tuition. Ditto for my sister. Now the country has two more law-abiding high-paid (and high-taxed as well) residents.
There is also a so called BafoeG which works somewhat like a college loan, but I didn't apply for it on principle because it limits the time you must finish your graduation in. I wanted to work as a working student and as an intern at relevant companies in the field instead and gather needed experience at the cost of a higher graduation time instead. A strategy which has more than paid off, if I may add.
Then the father in question has been a Nazi. Yes, a Jewish version of such, it exists as well, such people see non-Jewish people as inferior to Jewish ones. Does not necessary require religion to be one.
Same here: I've even managed to get a job before graduation, in a foreign land, without a proper work permit and with a residence permit which was about to end. The CS and EE fields a pretty much unchallenged.
As for arrogance: some of it is justified given how few students actually study CS and how few of them make it to the graduation. At my university there were at least 10 times more economics majors as there were CS majors. Those of CS students who minored in the economics (including myself) were pretty arrogant towards economics majors: the field of study is much more simpler than CS and shouldn't be considered a proper study at all:-)
Did not help in my case though: four job offers out of five interviews plus a good dozen interview invitations I have turned down after getting a really nice contract. Those internships and working student jobs did really paid off. I did sent about a hundred resumes away though. LaTeX, of course.
Just as it became customary for politicians to get a PhD and a fancy "Dr." to the name, a part of the public has decided to read their theses. This is how a democracy works.
Let me get this straight: people have more fun in the USA which causes higher suicide rates or do you mean that suicide is fun?

What are you folks doing at the "news for nerds" page anyway?
Paypal?
Not sure I want to see porn produced by Microsoft. Watching Ballmer hopping around on stage is bad enough already.

It always is.

And what is the conclusion in this book?
So, it is just a Raspberry Pi with x86, built-in hard disk and $300 instead of $35?

You mean "Tower to the PEOPLE!"?

Yacht? Looks more like a junk to me.

A remote control shuts those even more efficiently.
You have no idea how the schooling system in the Soviet Union worked.
>We did after all surrender twice in the last century, the French only once.
At least Germany put up a good fight in both cases.

They are holding it wrong.
Did this with fastboot only on my Wildfire. Twice :-)
Live executions need to happen, otherwise we won't get the Running Man show ever!
