  1. Re:Just my $0.02 on Sexism In Science · · Score: 1

Sorry to hear this, I'm in the technical field as well, but as I have been studying and afterwards working at the university at the faculty for computer science I have tried to support and encourage ladystudents more than their male counterparts. Mainly because there were so few of them (about 16%).

When I was looking for a new job I've seen many job offers which have specifically stated that female applicants will be chosen over male ones provided the same qualifications, which I also see as a right move. My current boss would gladly hire a lady applicant for a sake of diversity: the men-women ratio at my current company is even worse that at the university, but close to none apply. So at least in the CS many are willing to accept some discrimination of men in order for women to get interest in the field.

It is a pity that engineering and CS are not the career path women seek: there is a shortage (at least in the field I currently am) and it would do the industry good to be able to select from a much larger pool of applicants.

Very true, as I have been looking for a job after the university, I made sure to send not only a cv, but also a more or less unique letter where I have explained why I think that I would fit the position and highlight relevant facts of my experience and biography accordingly. Also made sure to mention relevant soft-skills. There were several areas of expertise I have targeted so I did have templates, but I also made sure to edit the cover letter so that the HR would see that I have actually been reading the job advertisement instead of spamming my resume.

Actually, I've been sending out resumes during my study and got a job before I've turned in my thesis. As for the question whether a CS degree is worth something -- it is, you can still self-teach yourself if you like.

The resumes were done with LaTeX, which is a nice thing to do. At an interview for the job I have taken, I have been even credited for it by a manager (one of the reason I took the job, the other was better than average payment :-) ). Out of the first five interviews I got four job offers, took one and refused all the subsequent invitations.

Why should it be one-way? Don't want your product to be copied? Then don't make a product that can be copied or don't distribute it. Nobody is forcing anybody, you know... Musicians can make concerts, actors can act in theaters, book writers can read books aloud to selected audience. They chose, however, to make a product which can be multiplied infinitely at zero cost. Such ability has its price which is a relative ease of sharing.

Those who accept this reality and treat a customer with respect will get my money -- i have bought several Humble Bundles, for example. Piracy is a service problem, after all.

  19. Re:so you lot are promoting ip theft now ? on The Pirate Bay Launches Free VPN · · Score: 1

It is called sharing, actually. Don't get me wrong, it is a crime to earn money by selling a copy without authors permission and should be punished. But if no money changes hands there is no IMO no crime, just sharing: a side effect of author's ability to create unlimited copies of a product at zero cost. Because by the devil's advocate logic it is a crime to buy a DVD and watch it with your family: your family members got the benefit of someone else's work without paying for it.

Fair use, of course, I know. There is a line between fair and unfair use though. To me this line is money: if money changes hands then there is an infringement, if not -- fair use. Simple to understand, simple to implement, simple to prove (kind of).
