Exactly. It's the money and power associated with the big time dealers that is the danger. If you could buy a pack of joints at the 7-11, somehow it doesn't seem like a big deal anymore.
Then again, the government enjoys having the power to shit on our rights more than it cares about weed. They know weed is not the scary gateway drug they say it is. But it makes for a great excuse to bust someone's balls and enact fucked up legislation on its behalf. See the War on Terror(TM) for reference.
If you remove the prohibition on drugs, they will lose some of their appeal. Kids smoke weed and drink because they're not supposed to. Sure, getting wasted can be fun -- but people like to do things they're not supposed to do. If you grow up accustomed to having a beer after school or wine with dinner, you're probably not going to fail out of college for drinking and partying too much.
Also, the profits from drug dealing are great. I think the US is missing out on a huge opportunity with marijuana. Imagine if it was taxed and sold like cigarettes. Or do you think there was lobbying and influence from the large tobacco producers around the time the government arbitrarily decided to demonize it.
Seriously, alcohol is legal and weed isn't? WTF?
I don't even smoke and I can see that. What the hell happened to this country?
This is exactly it. It amazes me how much money high schools pour into their athletic programs for new uniforms and equipment every year while the band has to hold car washes, etc. just to keep the stuff they have in working order.
bollocks.
This is what I came in here to say. There are those who say a candidate's view on evolution is irrelevant.
But as you said, if they think that little of science, they have no business being president.
but that's the problem -- it saves them money.
but we'll never see the savings. if they cust a third of their bandwidth, the prices wouldn't go down. besides, doesn't it balance out even if you have 50% of bandwidth being used by a minority when most people are just checking their e-mail and shopping online?
i could be wrong, but i don't buy their argument that piracy is crippling their networks. it's just a cheap ploy for the chance to censor content.
it's the golden rule: he who has the gold makes the rules. cliche but true.
that was good stuff. last day of school in 3rd grade, mom picks me and the sister up from school and had it in the back of the station wagon.
man, those were the days...
Exactly. I make music because I love doing it. I harbor no illusions about making millions off of what I do -- or even if I will get on a good indie label like Metropolis Records (non-RIAA), Accession, Noitekk, and to a lesser degree Cleopatra.
I'm not to a point to which I can quit my job and make music, but you had better believe that if I could support myself and my wife with it -- I would do it in an instant.
It's hard to break into, and it's even harder for talented musicians to make a name for themselves in a wasteland of recycled corporate garbage. People come up to me after my shows and tell me how much they enjoyed hearing something different for a change. Even though what I do is primarily industrial music, some of it is weird electronic rock, and people really get into it -- I mean people who don't normally listen to anything electronic. They ask me for CDs and a web address. They want to hear something different, and have no idea where to hear new music.
Experiences like this make me realize that people would embrace other kinds of music other than the crap the radio stations are paid to push. But the RIAA can't fucking let go. They're extinct and they don't even realize it.
this is true. i did a show last night here in Atlanta with an artist on the Noitekk label (who are often distrubted via Metropolis Records -- one of the biggest industrial labels on the planet) and i didn't make a dime. i don't know what the headliner made, but i hope it was at least somewhat worth their while to come up from Florida.
i have done my fair share of unpaid shows (as i'm still starting out) because the experience and exposure are good. later on, though, there will be more of the merchandising. merchandising sales are what keep many bands afloat on their tours; for some, it's better than that.
i don't know if it will go that far for me or not, but it doesn't hurt to try. i'm not quitting my day job just yet.
Furthermore, the article ALSO mentioned problems with Lotus Notes -- used for...(wait for it) business.
Your post was appropriately labeled as flamebait.
True.
Our right to vote is a dog and pony show -- an illusion that We The People(TM) are still in control. The corporate lobbies have already purchased the vote from Congress and the administration.
Our votes are worthless, our voices are heard by our "elected" officials as muffled shouting behind soundproof glass.

But our public school system is not designed to produce independent and critical thinkers. It's designed to produce consumers.

interesting. but what makes you think they'd drop their prices based on reduced network bandwidth?
adblock, bitches. /FFFTW
or that rabbit in the maze game on the Apple II.. /old
i found a copy of Wolf3D the other day on a 1.2MB floppy..

yeah, but encoding a 44.1/16bit into 192/24 is a bit like squeezing blood from a stone.
http://myspace.com/pxl -- i have a URL (www.pxlent.com) that i still developing.
i am taking a break from gigging to spend some time in the studio to record my first EP.

All excellent points. Thank you for clarifying the distinctions.
