I bet the guy in charge and the Chinese government don't see it your way.
Glitch happens, but for ceremonies like this one, this isn't a little glitch. If people notice, it's bad, specially if you're trying to impress people.
I don't know if it is optimism or elitism at this very moment.
On one hand I expect anyone capable of learning something as elementary as that, One the other hand I don't want to deal with people who do wan't to.
Still, how many self-certificated SSL site one average person visit in a month? I myself know only two : my school "extra"-net and RTAI webpage. Hardly the kind of site average people cross every day.
First of all, this is just a warning, like the one in FF2. It's just not in the same place. I really don't understand the issue here. (It is scary? So as long as you don't know the possible danger, it's OK to cross the road?)
Secondly, if a person don't understand this is just a warning and he can bypass it if he trust the site to be safe, I wouldn't let him go without warnings. It may restrain his access for one or two site, but he would be safer until he know better.
I don't know... It's a choice to let the user do anything (right or wrong) or to protect them from themself. From a clue-less user point of view, the latter seems better. For a well-informed user, it doesn't really matter (One clic at the first visit, and that's it...).
In the end, SSL isn't that common. You could always add exceptions in FF so they wouldn't cross the warning again.
It would'nt be google building, but I'm sure they wouldn't mind that much if someone took a photo of there coffee-machine. That is, if someone can access the said machine without meeting any "closed-door".
Banks don't care if you're buying porn (or pepsy rather than coca for that matter). Their business is money, not ads.
And anyway, you can always pay sensible stuff in cash if you don't want it to appear in your bank record. (The first reason I see is you don't want your girlfriend/boyfriend/mom to know if they read it.)
So maybe they can data-mine, but they won't bother (except exception) because they have better things to do.
Google business, on the other hand, is ads, so they are interested by your personal stuff. Then it's a matter of balancing bad publicity for selling data and money made with the data. I have no way to know witch weight more on google "morality"(actually more "good reputation")/business balance.
I don't really mind google ads because in exchange I get good free services, and mostly I don't really care if they know I prefer Lucy Liu over Natalie Portman. But if I have something to hind I don't put it on the internet, and I certainly don't want to have to.
Looks more like designed to be defective to me... Linux section for a board that isn't suppose to support linux? Come on, I don't even understand why they bother to do that... (Maybe it would have taken the default table and risk working?)

I think he like to play hangman.
And hey, trial and error never hurt anyone before
Famous last words?
Well maybe not in this context, but I wouldn't generalize.

This is ridiculous. No, really it is.

Not so much... You can accept certificate once and for all for a site, it's not that much annoying.
Well, the betta of FF3 was annoying because it wasn't clear how you could accept those certificate, but they fixed that. Now it's as simple as in FF2.
Slides aren't just waste of time. It depends how you do them.
I'll grant you the fact that many people don't know how to do them well. (And I don't even talk about annoying effects)
Once that genie is out of the bottle its *very* hard to put back....

The ads in my bank statement are usually for service in my bank so they don't need data-mining for that.
But now that you say that, I come to think the situation must be different for different bank and/or country. (but really, they shouldn't)
Anyway you can always buy stuff by cash, the real problem is the bank don't want to give you cash anymore.

Okay that's not constructive at all, but it was about time someone bring out the old proprietary/free troll.
Actually, the ones monitoring are counted online...
In fact they are only 42.
Sorry, I understood "defective by design" as "they just don't know how to do it right". Witch isn't incompatible, now that I think about it...

Why would I use a scripted language if performance is that important?
I hope you mean never unroll your loops in a compiled language. In scripting, you often can't avoid it.
Why?
The question is whether people are going to be willing to make the economic and social sacrifices to do it.

All they need is a towel for each of them, and they'll be fine.
On the bright side, that would preserve the earth from being destroyed by vogon.
