It's actually not that tricky to solve, just time-consuming. I can do a 3x3 in a couple of minutes, a 4x4 in half an hour, and a 5x5 in a couple of hours.

  5. Re:Legos? on Holy LEGO Blocks, Batman! · · Score: 3, Interesting

Actually, C3 blocks (made by PlayAlong) and the Minimates are quite different from their Lego counterparts. I know this because I just wasted money on the C3 Batcave (incorporated into the animated movie), hoping they would integrate easily with my other stuff. They don't at all. The plastic feels much cheaper, and the pieces, while harder to connect to each other, tend to pop apart when even slightly disturbed. Building the set was largely an exercise in frustration, and I'm hesitant to move it much as it has a tendency to spontaneously fall apart.

The Minimate figs aren't 'custom made on the generic LEGO character body' at all. They're almost twice as tall and aren't interchangeable at all with Lego minifigs. They're interesting as they have a lot of points of articulation, but they're far more delicate, and are made of soft rubber.

Don't get me wrong, I really wanted to like this set. I've enjoyed Lego sets for years, and have long hoped for a Batman franchise. They even used Bruce Timm's Animated Series stylings for the minifigs. In the end, though, poor construction, misleading packaging, and almost indecipherable instructions all demonstrate that there's a gulf between Lego and the vastly inferior C3/Playalong.

You might also consider Metamagical Themas (Amazon, Alibris), also by Hofstadter. I took Intro to CS I & II at Grinnell College while in high school, and my first professor gave it to me as a high school graduation present.

I would say without a doubt that it has had a profound effect on the way I think about programming and CS as a whole. It's about CS only as much as it is about logic, math, puzzles, reasoning, music, philosophy, and life. It's one of the most well-worn books in my library, and reading it always renews my passion to learn, to explore, to see CS as a road that's worth exploring, not as just a quick way to get from point A to point B.

Granted, I don't know how well lex/yacc cover non-ascii character sets, but it wouldn't be hard to whip up a compiler for a French, Spanish, or German version of C++.

Warrantee is moot, though. If the iPod were still under warrantee, Apple will fix it for free. If you're in the situation where you're debating shelling out $99 to Apple or $50 for a DIY battery, then there's no warrantee to void.

  13. Re:Oh my gosh! on "iPod's Dirty Secret" · · Score: 5, Insightful

Yes, I think I would. For starters, they don't actually have to pay $250, as another poster here pointed out, it's actually $99. I'm willing to assume that when he called about getting the battery replaced he got someone new/clueless. Besides, 18 months is hardly 'a few months'. Why are people upset that Apple charges money to replace parts that aren't under warranty?

IIt really sucks that his iPod battery died as quickly as it did, and it's unfortunate he ended up with an unknowledgeable person on his Tech support call, but they both seem to be isolated incidents. A friend of mine has had his iPod for at least that long and he doesn't have any problems with it.

My roommate has a PS2 and keeps it in the living room, so I wouldn't spend $200 on a redundant system. I would, however, consider paying $99 simply for the fact that he and I aren't planning on living together forever. It would be nice if I could still play the few PS2 games that I own once I no longer have access to his machine.

I had a friend who had a cell with voice-activated dialing and was trying to demonstrate it for me one day while we were on a walk. For whatever reason, he had put his friend Tommy into the phone under the name "Mommy". He spoke into the phone very clearly "Mommy", but it just beeped at him. He figured he just needed to vary his tone, so he spent roughly two minutes walking down the street repeating the word "Mommy" with minor variations before he gave up.

The moral is, if you ever use voice dialing, don't use any nickname you wouldn't mind repeating 20 times in a row while in public.
