Along the same lines, if one had the time and money to spend, Windows could be adapted to doing everything that Linux does now.
And for those of us who dont have oodles of cash and a fortune 500 company(read: most of us), and for those who do but have better things to spend money on(read: practically everyone else on this planet), thankfully there are many free options which are getting better all the time: Linux, TRON, *BSD, etc.
Sure, Windows could be adapted to many environments if you had just sh*tloads of money to throw at it, but every dollar thrown at a problem decreases the value of its solution.
No, what is in question here is: will Sony be prosecuted for distributing a virus or not? Because that is exactly what they are doing. If I send out a virus in an e-mail with the subject: Warning, this is a virus, do not open! and some jackass opens it, and they trace it back to me, guess what: I still go to jail. Here we have a company openly admitting they are spreading a virus. I want some justice, please.
Who was the guy who flew before the wright bros? I remember that there were lots of eye witness accounts. I also remember reading that Germany recognises him as the first flyer. If I recall, his flight was longer than the Wright brothers as well. Just goes to show you how badly American schools have mangled history (more like hystery, the way its taught). Just look at Nicola Tesla, all the things he did that that swindler Thomas Edison gets credit for. I would hate to be a history teacher. The lessons would just stick in my craw.
Now we can all be Riggers. Just hop into your car and think about turning it on. Vroom baby! And my bumper sticker will say, "Don't even think about getting in my lane!" To Steve Jackson Games: Make backups now because they'll be coming again as soon as they hear about this.
"No one has treaded here," said Evan Quinn, of the Hurwitz Group. "You are talking about changing the paradigm of how business and software works. They will provide an example for the rest of the industry regarding how to implement Web services."
Mr. Quinn, your attention is invited to:
here, here, or here to see where the ground has been tread, the flag has been planted, and the ground has been tilled regarding paradigm changes and setting the example.
MSDOS...stolen idea.
Windows...stolen idea(Amiga)
MS Word...Wordperfect
Access...yep they invented databases too.
Excel...they added a gui.
the list goes on. The only innovation from Redmond has been from the Marketing department. But I preach to the choir.
Point is, if you really believe what you are saying to be true, I am sorry for you.
We homeschool our children for several reasons:
First, The education system in the U.S. is inadequate. Both my wife and myself have learned more since leaving high school than when we were in gradeschool. Everything I really needed to learn, I learned by 6th grade. Homeschoolers almost ALL score in the 80th to 90th percentile compared to public schooled children. That really is giving your child the advantage. In fact, ivy league colleges specifically seek out homeschooled children because of thier ability to excel above publicly educated students! Second, the public school system spends a great deal of time corralling the herd. Homeschooling, we spend around 3 to 4 hours a day working on school, the rest, the kids get to be kids. It makes for an easier day for everyone.
Third, (and this is an important one) No Homework. Why, please tell me, would I send my child to learn for 7 hours a day, then have them come home and spend another 5 hours doing what should have been done at school(learning)? Like I said, we spend 3 to 4 hours a day on lessons. In the past half year my oldest son has jumped from 2nd grade reading level to 6th. And thats just one area of learning.
Fourth, Why would I send my children to some place where they are to be raised by thier peers? Lets face it. Kids learn from watching each other. There are far too few "diamonds in the rough" out there to be positive influence on my children, both in the student body AND on the faculty. So just leaves a lot of bad influence, and not much good at all.
Fifth, This whole separation of church and state thing. NEVER was today's situation meant to happen and our founding fathers are rolling over in thier graves. We should all be ashamed of ourselves for letting it come to this point. If you dig around, and find statistics, You will find that most of the bad features of America started right when God was removed from schools. Crime rate, Abortion, Murder, Premarital sex, The inability of the average person to keep their promises on anything. Think about it. The reason is so simple. Nobody feels like they are responsible to anyone, not even God.
Which leads us to Six. What is being taught in schools is so terribly inacurate. The driving force for most of early American history is the belief in God. Telling the American story without mentioning God is like trying to explain how a nuclear reactor works without explaining what fission is. "Oh well these rod thingies get hot and- Why? Well they just do. Trust me, I work for the govornment."
I used to think that being a single parent was the only good excuse not to homeschool. But think about it. You spend that much time every day doing homework anyway. And you can afford to shut off that boob-tube for 3 to 5 hours and spend it on your kids. You will not only be investing in your kid's future, but the future of America.
But the short answer is: Yep, it the parents fault. You really cannot blame the govornment for screwing up raising YOUR kids.
In places like Russia they have practically zero cases of attention deficit disorder. That's because kids there grow up not having TV and video games and such. There kids learn to concentrate and stay focused on one thing for more than 5 minutes without it whizzing, banging, or popping. But didn't we already really know that?
It's really simple. Billy stays on game console 10 hours a day, Billy doesn't read a book or play outside or do anything worthwhile for that 10 hours a day. Billy grows older, but doesn't really grow up. 15 years later people wonder why Billy can't function in this world of ours. It's because Billy is still mentally an 8 year old. Watch an 8 year old for an hour or so: they are pretty violent. They mature out of that stage. BUt not if they can escape into Hyrule for 90% of thier waking hours.
That's pretty cool. Just try running a normal diesel in a sealed environment and watch the air pressure drop. It's not fun. Your ears will hate you for it. I still get the willies every time I play UT Pressure...
New Mandrake releases are like nose-candy for newbies. I've been hooked for a while now. I love Slack, and Debian is where its at. But I still love to get my hands on the latest ML releases just to see what new things they put in the distro. But it makes ya lazy, everything(generally) works right out of the box.(Some might consider that a feature;) Mandrake Forum seems to be turning into a little community. Kudos particularly to Deno for that site. There's lots of nuggets to ferret out of that site if you have problems.
Here is a very good reason not to put Jedi if you are Christian or believe that the Bible is true.
Note that this is KJV, not the watered down NIV version.
Daniel 11: 37-38 " He shall give no heed to the gods of his fathers; he
shall not give heed to any other god, for he shall magnify himself above
all. He shall honor the god of forces instead of these; a god whom his
fathers did not know he shall honor."
One of the coolest things I've seen are the suckers that, when you bite on them, you hear the sounds. Sound bytes I think they are called. Now, Wouldn't it be great to have a radio reciever that you just pop in your mouth like a mouthguard? The belt-clip transmitter plugs into your Rio (or soundcard, whatever) and transmits the audio to the mouthpiece, then the mouthpiece vibrates your bones to make the sounds.
Anyway, in your situation, with a setup like that, you could just wear regular earplugs.
I see lots of comments about each. Lets think about this. Part of the oath for military service is to defend the Constitution(i.e. the people, not the document) against ALL enemies, foriegn, AND DOMESTIC. Yet here we are, fighting over oil, (read, yesterday's energy source) when our innocent citizens are being oppressed by drug dealers, and often being killed, some slowly with the drugs they sell, and others quickly with thier guns. Entire neighborhoods are being wiped out by this cancer on our nation. It is killing the U.S. as surely as any cancer. My point is, it is time (past time, you are late!) to send the troops in and truly FIGHT this war. Whoo, the thought sends shivers doesn't it? I don't want trained warriors in the streets of my neighborhood, either. But trained warriors are killing our children with drugs RIGHT NOW. Sometimes, Radiation treatment is ineffective against cancer. This time, the cutsie little "War on Drugs" is doing NOTHING AT ALL to cure the disease. All its doing is controlling a symptom, public perception. At this time, the only option available to save this country from self-destruction is a surgical operation. Remove the cancer from our streets. Kill all the dealers with a swift death. Even if it is mom and dad. Even if it is your own children dealing. Cleanse this country.
I will not lie: I fear such a thing. Noone likes war. It is an ugly business.
My question then is this: How many hours after you are elected before you declare officially the state of national emergency we are in and do something about it? Send in the troops? Allow them to fulfill the oath they swore? This makes it a tough issue, when it's laid on the line doesn't it? You'd be known as the President that declared war on the U.S. streets. But which of you is going to truly stand up to the greatest enemy America has? Only the bravest of you. That one will have my vote.
Does this remind anyone of Red/Green/Blue Mars?
Corporate Govornment seems to be inevitable. They rule us in practice now, but soon they will rule us in fact. Just my $.02
In the world of capitalism, you have an idea, you try to make money from it, you face competition. If you are successful, you get rich. If not, you don't. Clearly, what has happened here is that they did not anticipate the opensource community in thier mathematics. Now, thier whole business model is shown to have a flaw, and now they are beating thier chest and trying to scare us away. They have no leg to stand on legally, as far as I can see. You cry out to us that, "Oh my goodness, the bigger, badder companies will come in if you don't stop!" Yep, we will hack thier hardware too. Enter Tivo, etc.
This is the same as when little kids play games. One gets mad when he loses and cries foul because he didn't know all the rules. Capitalism is a hard game to master.
Eventually companies will learn that the paradigm has changed. It happens. Don't cry about it. You could have made a quick buck 5 years ago. Now there is no market for your product. Change your business model.
This reminds me of quarts watches. Once not too long ago, the Swiss were the defacto in watchmaking. Then someone came up with the idea of the quarts watch.(in fact, he was Swiss, I think) But the Swiss didn't anticipate the quarts watch catching on. Look on your wrist. Mine says Timex. That's Japanese, I believe. The paradigm changed. That is just the way capitalism works. Live with it. Learn from it. Try something else. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Here in Japan, one buys one's phoneline, then you pay the phone company for the service of connecting the phoneline which you own. Just because it is true in the U.S. does not make it true everywhere. Also, domain names can be purchased from anywhere in the world. It would then fall under international law I think. This case should never even seen daylight. It is out of the judge's jurisdiction, or should be. just my IANAL $.02
An artist publishes his work on the internet. for free. no charge. this way he builds a reputation. Once his/her reputation is sufficient, he may then look for ways to get paid. Suppose, for example,I write a book, and I am well known as a writer. I set up a system where my book is held by a trustee, who is collecting fees in an account for me. (This person/business does not have to be anyone terribly special, a nominal lawyer fee at most.) When the account reaches a predetermined $ amount, the book is released to the internet, I still hold the copyrights, but allow non-commercial use. The bank account is released to me, and I have been paid for my work. No middlemen, other than the accountant(or lawyer). This benefits everyone. If publishing company X wants to print it, I have more leverage, because its proven to be a success already. I win again. How is it that artists are still not getting paid for thier work? As long as it is quality, there should be no problem. The road is more difficult to get published via the traditional channels, IMHO. It is not the companies who need to be converted to making money on the web. It is the artists who need to learn how to promote themselves, and stand on thier own two feet. I love books, and I love music. I have written both. I would rather publish it the way I want it published than let others manhandle my work, if I wished to have my work published.
But again, don't worry about getting the companies onboard. The paradigm has already changed. Let the artists know what to do. Everything else will follow.
First there was the gameboy advance with its PIM cartridge. Now there is a palm device that plays games. Why oh why cant they all just get along?
