The minute they said there was an application fee it should have been obvious.
That, plus the tiny size of the team, the handwaving away of all technical problems to subcontractors, and the bizarre funding ideas, should have warned people off long ago. Sadly the regular newsmedia, in their admirable efforts to publish fun and interesting science storise, were duped.
I doubt it's a "Scam" If it were, they could have been a lot cleverer and gotten a lot more money. I do think it's a bunch of well meaning people that will at some point, if they haven't already, realize they just got a shit-ton of money from a lot of people in a lot of countries that have a lot of laws... and they might not be able to pull this off... and it's inevitable that one of those laws in one of those countries will involve caning, hard labor or sex with large bikers... at which point they will vanish overnight and leave this looking pretty much like it was a scam... so oh, never-mind, just assume its a scam, the result will be the same either way.
People accustom to Waterfall look at an Agile project and scream: "It's not possible! How could you even attempt to move forward without the specs carved in granite and hauled to the top of a mountain by a neck-beard in robes?!?!" The Agile folks roll their eyes and tell grandpa to get back to not getting anything done.
That said, this is probably still going nowhere. But at least they're trying eh?
Will you ever get it right? Will you ever get the fucking title right?
They did not fail to predict.
They said we (yes, i was there at the time) could stay home since the likelihood of a strong earthquake was not heightened by the preceeding MONTHS-long swarm.
And the distinction is?
If there was a well established method for predicting earthquakes that they ignored. Sure, fine then. But there's no current way to predict earthquakes that isn't better than a divining rod. So you have to fall back on statistics which say you're probably safer staying home. Thousands of people tracking half way across the country are more likely to get hurt on the road than in an earthquake at home.
He's a lame duck president. Its typical that, once you have no chance to get anything passed what-so-ever... and you'll not have to deal with all the details... you can promise the moon.
Lame duck president: "I think the minimum wage should be $100/hr" Clueless public: "Yay! We love you! You'll be remembered as a president that cares about the people!" Party in control of congress: "Um... that's a terrible idea. We're not even going to consider it" Lame duck president: "Man, those guys are jerks. How about we give everyone a free puppy?" Clueless public: "Yay!"
The FCC doesn't need congressional approval to implement net neutrality, or Title 2 regulation. So there's no need to "start regulation." I suggest reading TFA, it's fairly educational!
But the FCC does need funding. Which comes from congress.
If the FCC does do this, and congress gets upset about it, what you will likely see is a budget that reads "...and no part of this appropriation can be used in the regulation of ISPs as utilities..." etc... Congress has done it before (both republican and democrat) and they can do it again.
I'd disagree on that. I've been through Hurricanes and tornadoes myself. They are relatively easy to prepare for. Don't live in a flood plane (New Orleans!?!?!) You can get hurricane straps at Home Depot for 50 cents each and do your whole house for under $50 on a Sunday. Buy a house with a basement so you have somewhere to shelter and you're good. Most importantly, hurricanes and tornadoes have an upper limit to their strength. You could get hit with the strongest of either (or both in some cases) and at worst, your house is gone but you're safe in the basement on high ground because you were smart. Earthquakes have no upper limit and you have no time to get to shelter. Your entire house could literally end up sitting in molten lava when it's over, but more likely some heavy thing falls on you... no thank you.
If you change your diet you can change these microbs as well.
This is based on genes. Your genetic makeup makes your body a more hospitable environment for some microbes.
My random made-up example: I have a genetic disposition for heartburn and increased acid production. These "Skinny microbes" cannot live in the higher acid environment so I don't get them.
I do not know that acid is the problem, but it's likely something like that.
The entire argument in favor of modular phones is highly questionable IMHO. I see little evidence that this will represent a cost savings for consumers, that modular phones offer any serious advantages -- or that this is even something consumers want. It is also highly likely that modular phones will be larger, as modularity implies a component system that is by-definition less space-efficient than factory assembled.
It's not to make them cheaper. Though, being able to put your high dollar investment in the camera, for example, and not the CPU, would have it's advantages. What this is really for is those of us that like to tinker around with this sort of thing. Personally, I'm constantly swapping out components on my PC. That said, this entire situation could fail miserably if they can't agree on a standard. If you can't use company X's camera on company Z's phone frame, this entire premise is dead in the water.
maybe it's the weight gain that leads to the hunger! (IE, due to hyperinsulemia the energy consumed is being partitioned to the fat cells, rather than being available for the rest of the body to use -- thus the constant hunger, despite eating more than enough calories)
Imagine being a heroine addict. Then imagine having to quit your addiction while there's a heroin vending machine 30feet from your desk that accepts quarters. That's the situation people with this disease are in.
I was thinking the same thing. It looks a Lot like Team fortress 2... with a bit of anime thrown in.
F2P is already dead. It was clever at first, but those of us that railed against it (myself included) ended up being dead right about where it would lead to. Ripoff and ripoff, until you couldn't trust any developer at all. Culminating, of course, in the penultimate pay-to-win ripoff, ElderScrolls online. Where the games $60 upfront. AND there's a $15/month subscription just to play. AND there's a cash store so you can pay to win. It's easily the biggest flop of the year... maybe even the decade.
And that's the paradox. There is ALWAYS the question "but what caused THAT?" with no ultimate answer more satisfactory than a meta-physicist can come up with.
See, you're thinking classically. Causality must be maintained. But causality is an artifact of the existence of time. The big bang created time as well.
It would be like a stick figure on a piece of paper saying "Ok, so I was drawn by a giant pencil. But where IS the pencil?!? I can look to the top and bottom of the paper... to the right and left... there is no giant pencil! Therefor it cannot exist."
So... some random person somewhere... can see my sleeping baby. But they have no idea where that baby is other than the last hop out of my ISP so they might know I'm somewhere in Atlanta... or whatever. Maybe if they stared at the feed 24/7 for years I might drop my water bill in the crib before I picked the baby up so they could get my address or something... But ok, so they can see a video feed of my sleeping baby? So what?
Short of a camera pointed directly at my bed, or my toilet, I don't see how this would be that god awful. First, I'd never point a camera at my bed. Any camera. Second, someone seeing pictures of me walking around my pizza restaurant? With no address and no idea who I am or where my restaurant is? So what?!?! There are plenty of horribly invasive privacy problems out there. This isn't one of them.
I dunno about this who thing. Verpamil is a common drug. Diabetes is a common problem. There exists data sets from the big insurers, systems like Kaiser and those nasty socialists, the Scandinavians, who have had computerized medical records for decades. It would seem easy to ask the question 'Are the glucose (or better yet Hemoglobin A1c) levels) among patients taking verapamil and different from similar patients not taking the drug.
You could get some pretty good data pretty quick. You would still need to do the prospective study, but you could get an idea if it made sense to go further.
Of course, they could have done such a study - these puff piece articles aren't of the highest caliber.
so... you didn't read it at all before posting or what?
You are missing OP's point, which is type II diabetes is typically a lifestyle/choice disease. Moderation as in, moderate eating, exercise, etc.
However, OP missed something from the article, this isn't type II, but type I diabetes!
But this isn't for Type 2. It's for Type 1... and it's been proven that moderation doesn't work for either. The disease creates the cravings that lead to the weight gain.
Are they talking about type 1 diabetes (lack of insulin production) or type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance)? I suspect it's type 2 because fixing a pancreas that's not producing insulin would be quite difficult if not impossible.
Nope, the title of the trial is:
the re-purposing of verapamil as a beta cell survival therapy in type 1 diabetes
It's not about how silly things sound, it's about how directly contrary to observable reality Cartesian Dualism is. I'm pretty flexible about people believing things for no reason, hell I do too, but dualism at this point, is, like creationism, plain old science denial.
Sorry... but you've got 2 old guys claiming some crazy stuff that makes no logical sense as far as the layman is concerned. They both claim to have rock solid proof. None of witch makes any sense. Neither you, nor I, can test any of it. I, like you, chose to believe that quantum physics is real. But to lambaste the religious side for being stupid? I'm sorry, I'm just not there.
I have faith that physicists have done their work well, and are impartial and not lying to me. But my mother that attends church feels the same way about her pastor. I do not have enough time left in my life to turn around and learn the skills I'd need to actually verify what scientist have told me, nor the money to buy the equipment. So I therefor am going on faith, just like my mother. It would be the hight of hypocrisy for me to scold her for doing the exact same thing I'm doing.
I'm not saying you should dump this science nonsense and start going to church. I'm saying you should get off your high horse and let people believe what they want to.
Why are so many people so adamant about the notion that consciousness can't come from the physical brain?
Personally, I withhold judgment on spirituality. As silly as some religion sounds, reality is even sillier. What the catholic church has to say isn't half as crazy as what's coming out of CERN these days.
A week from now if someone does follow through on the threats is it still a joke? Seriously, sometimes threats do get carried out.
Yes... lots of jokes and one crazy Jerk.
How many teenage boys make jokes about shooting up a school every day? (if you're really wondering, it's pretty much all of them) Do those kids... admittedly idiots and insensitive... have anything to do with the truly mentally ill individuals that carried out those actual events? Would gagging the idiot teenagers actually prevent the mentally ill from committing murder? Or should we instead focus our efforts on treating the mentally ill and not waste time on teenagers being morons.
A) Statistics. 1/4 of the entire US population is under 18... who do you think spends more time on the computer? B) So should planet killing meteors. But you can't do anything about either threat so why are you bothering? C) What's a joke toy? Anyways... it's laughable, because she didn't get driven out of her home. Someone posted crap online, she moved. She didn't have to. No one's killed anyone over this and no one will. It's funny because she moved for absolutely no reason. On top of that, she could have prevent this entire thing if she had any clue how to use the internet and kept herself anonymous. Instead she used her real name and had some sort of foolish belief that it was hard to find out her address. It'd take anyone with half a brain in their head about 2hrs to track down the address of anyone that wasn't hiding their real address under a shell company like celebrities do. If you think you can go on the internet, debate controversial topics under your real name, and not have teenagers mail you nasty letters, you're an idiot. D) You're right. The group they are specifically targeting is: Easy targets. Stop being one.
I don't think you realise this but it illegal to threaten to kill someone. So yes, every death threat issued in a bar that is reported and where there is suitable evidence should be prosecuted and where convicted rehabilitative action taken as well as compulsary remediation by the perpetrator to the victim.
Wow... I bet you're a blast at parties.
But it's impossible to catch anonymous teenagers on the internet after they post anything at all... much less hollow death threats. So now where has all your flailing about gotten you?
Threats aren't protected under any nations' free speech protections. Zero of them.
Having stupid opinions, and insulting people are protected under: a great many.
Whether you pretend there's no difference or not, this is a long-settled question, and you need to grow up.
Except that you're forgetting, there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. You can make anything you want illegal, but if you can't enforce that law, it's not really a law is it? You can say anything you want on the internet with impunity and no matter how vile or insulting it is, there's nothing anyone can do to stop you.
Moreover, if you don't want people to bring the internet insults into your real life, don't bring your real life onto the internet. This person used her real life persona to wade into this debate and then acted surprised when they got real life harassment. The harassment is not ok, it's not right, but it's the price we have to pay to have a free and open internet.
If someone started screwing with me with my CharlieMopps ID on slashdot in such a way that I found it unbearable, I'd drop the account and come up with a new beer related persona in about 30 seconds. I do have my real name, real self out of the internet as well. Under that name I do not argue hot button issues or otherwise set myself up for trolling because it's a pain in the ass to get a new real name.
If you don't like the way this is, think about what the fix would be. No more anonymity. But hey, that would never get abused right?
The minute they said there was an application fee it should have been obvious.

Sounds like fracking to me....
Given that fracking was illegal in Nevada until about a month ago, I'd say you're wrong.
If you change your diet you can change these microbs as well.

If they start building these, you can rest assured that at least half the engineers working on the project will be on the NSA payroll.
