Some American universities are good, but an awful lot more of them are crap.... American universities/schools also seem to have a have a higher rate of shooting rampages than most other countries.
From reading the comments relating to this article I've notice that a few people here are angry or afraid of the idea of China becoming the number one nation. The fact of the matter is that China is rapidly growing and is already the top dog in many fields. Americans are going to have to start getting used to the fact that they are not the most powerful superpower anymore. China is much, much bigger and are in a better position to produce quality low-cost products and technologies because they don't have the same red tape and high wages that Americans expect.
There's no doubt Vista will improve with time. Microsoft will be recieving alot of user feedback and will know what they need to do to improve their software. Upgrading to a new operating system is never a pleasant experience, just ask any Mac or Ubuntu user who has had problems with the upgrade process. So, Microsoft will make the improvements they need to make and the Windows user base will be happy. Yes, I know alot of slashdot users use other operating systems and that's fair enough. Keep on using whatever operating system YOU like the best, that's what everyone else does;-)
There's alot of really buggy programs for Linux too. That's why there is a "force-quit" option in the Gnome panel and a kill command in the terminal. I guess with any software it's the quality of the code in the software itself that makes it reliable. The reason why you are more likely to see windows crash isn't necessarily because it is less stable than, it's because it is much more widely used.
I think you're exaggerating things just a little. It's not that bad on most computers I've used it on, especially the Linux ones. Maybe you've configured your systems badly.
I would have to agree... Java certainly works better in certain situations. Java itself was original designed for mobile devices. It's pretty silly for people to judge Java because a few hjava apps like Limewire are a wee bit slow to load. Modern phones can run java apps really quickly
If they are releasing the source code for the O/S then you can pretty much do whatever you want with it within reason. Java has been chosen for the standard apps because it's more suitable for portable devices. Nearly all portable devices use a form of java for this reason. Since it's a Linux based system and Linux is modular you can assume that C++ will work providing you have the right hardware capabilities and the right software and libraries installed.
"____ does not try to please everybody"
Most people use this phrase to try and defend software with bad interfaces. It is of course like the infamous "Linux, isn't for everyone" phrase which has been used umpteen times to try and justify the fact that Linux wasn't user friendly. Luckily things have changed now. GIMP not only needs to replicate Photoshop, it needs to be better than photoshop. Right now most professional photographers are using photoshop because there is nothing else as good for working with photos. That's all fine and well if you support proprietry software or can afford to fork out for photoshop, but not everyone has access to photoshop. If free software is to be taken seriously it needs to be competitive. 'Gimp' needs to change it's name into something socially acceptable, the interface needs to be made more professional and it generally needs a good tidy up. The developers and fans need to quit making up excuses and get the finger. The rest of Linux is moving on but GIMP is being left behind.
Your post only really applies to Windows users. Alot of the readers on here use alternative operating systems lik Linux, BSD, Mac etc. We live in a multi-platform world these days.
There are far too many FPS games. After Wolfenstien and Doom it got old. Yeah, sure the graphics have improved but at the end of the day it's just the same old idea.
I think the Nintendo Wii has been the only significant improvement to gaming in the last 10 years. The PS2 only expands on the Megadrive/Genesis by having better graphics and a few extra buttons on the controller. The Wii is the first system to bring a whole new approach to the gaming interface so hats off to them for having some ORIGINALITY. Joypads have been around since the 1980's.
After Breezy and Dapper I thought Edgy and Feisty were pretty crap in comparison. I think Gusty finally has put Ubuntu back on course toward making Linux mainstream on the desktop. The driver management is a huge plus and so is the new display configuration. There's alot of other wee tweaks in thebackground that makes this the best update for a while. I think they just need to fix hardware issues in the next version and make sure big stores like Dixons/Currys/Argos have a few Ubuntu machines on display and Ubuntu will be mainstream in the UK. People are becoming extremely dissatisfied with Vista and we should take advantage of that.
A agree.... Use some kind of firewall so that only recognised data transmissions can be used. It's nice to be able to quitely browse the web or send a txt but people talking when you are trying to sleep is another matter.
Gusty Gibbon has an easy-to-use restricted drivers wizard that makes it really easy to install and use restricted drivers. This works for alot of modems, network cards and other hardware. It also has a graphical easy-to-use monitor/graphics interface that lets you choose which graphics drivers you want to use.
All in all I think Gutsy is the first step in a new process of creating better hardware support in Ubuntu. Hopefully this will encourage more companies to provide driver support for Ubuntu and Linux in general.
How many "clicks" does it take to type in that multi-digit registration code? How many "clicks" does it take to phone microsoft to get an even longer registration code that you have to type in? How many "clicks" does it take to run a Vista LiveCD?
It's just another name for a satellite-based space laser. There's an episode of The Man From UNCLE where the bad guys try to get one of these for use in assasinations and to destroy cities around the world. I'd be very concerned that any country would have this kind of weaponry. I think it's important that no single country can dominate the world.
Awarding that prize to such a high profile PARTISAN poltician has pretty uch destroyed the reputation of the prize. This isn't the first time the decision has been a bad one. Irish biggots won it a few years ago too when they were the main people who caused the problems
Freenet looks like a pedophiles dream.

Iraqis, we invaded your country. Now you can have a flawed voting system just like us :-)
Wasn't that worth the thousands of deaths and instability?

There's a google site at Google.US so maybe they should've put the veterans day stuff on that. Dot com has a much more international feel to it.
Only stalkers and people who can't get chicks use those sites!!

Ubuntu runs better on my laptop than Vista does. End of story. Bye bye Vista.
Gutsy has a nice new grahical wizard for installing/changing your grpahics settings ;-)
They didn't invent this

I dont think it says anywhere that anyone was drunk. People here are putting words into the original authors mouth.
Comment your code thorughly so people know what's going on.
