  1. Immigrants on UK Government Plans 10-Year Database of Citizens' Travel · · Score: 0, Flamebait

They need to concentrate on the non-citizens who are coming into the country, not the citizens who are traveling abroad. Just last week there were strikes because too many people are coming into the UK. The UK is already overcrowded and the government seems to be able to do very little to control the borders effectively. Allowing Workers to freely migrate within the EU was a big mistake and will drive wages down.

  2. Linux Bubble People on Why Windows Must (and Will) Go Open Source · · Score: 1

If you spend alot of time on Linux friendly community sites and spend most of your computing time in Linux then it's very easy to start thinking that Linux is bigger than it really is. Then you get out into the real world and realise almost everyone is using Windows and the most people don't even know what Linux is.

Two dead hard drives on different laptops was enough to convince me. Coincidence? Maybe... Worth taking the risk? No. I do run Ubuntu on my SSD based eeepc though. It was only £180 so I'm not too worried if it breaks and I also know this hard disk issue probably wont occur because SSD works differently. Now m only problem is that the fans dont work properly and it runs hotter than Xandros did. I've had it for about 6 months and it hasn't burnt out yet.

If like me you'd lost two laptops to this bug then you wouldn't consider it flamebait. Ubuntu is fine on Desktops but it has fan issues and hard disk issues on many laptops I've used. I have Ubuntu on my eeepc now and it seems to work ok but it runs pretty hot sometimes. The main issue I've had with Ubuntu on laptops is premature hard disk failure.

I think the European ATV is looking quite promising for transportation of goods and eventually people to the ISS. It'll be interesting to see what China and India come up with as they also seem to be making major inroads into space travel. It's quite exciting that so many countries can do stuff now and I hope that competition leads to better advances in technologies. A new space race might be a good thing (for people who are interested in space travel)

  8. Why space is important on The Fight Over NASA's Future · · Score: 1

Having a missile that can orbit the earth gives it the ability to have a longer range. Also, having a satellite that can shoot a laser with pinpoint accuracy would surely be very handy. In WWII and the Cold War eras aerial dominance was of great importance. That's partly why the Soviets and USA scrapped over the German technology after the WWII. Now however the main threat seems to be from the ground in suprise attacks carried out by organisations rather than countries. Why risk getting hit with nukes when you can hire an external 'terrorist' group to do your bidding? Thing is, although the newish threat of terrorism grabs all the news, the old threats are still there too. Or maybe the government just wants to scare you so that you become more 'patriotic' and allow them to hold power.

Youtube is better. Also, the BBC has a blatent left-wing political stance. It's ok for a normal media corporation to be politically biased because you can just turn over, but a taxpayer funded one should be a little more balanced. Yes you can turn the BBC over, but you still have to support them financially whether you watch BBC channels or not. I've nothing against people who are left of centre, I just dont like paying the BBC if they are not being even-sided. I also don't see the point in funding the BBC when the Internet has brought us plenty of alternatives. If it isn't scrapped then it should be an optional subscription like virgin or sky that you only pay for if you use it.

The RIAA cant ever stop people recording or distributing sound. Maybe they have some influence in the US, but there are billions of people on the web who don't live in the US and will continue to copy and share music/videos. I've heard that there are chinese p2p programs like ppstream that allow you to watch hundresds of recent movies on demand and there's nothing the Americans can do about it.

  11. VirtualBox vs. VMWare ESx Server on VirtualBox 2.1 Supports 64-Bit VM In 32-Bit Host · · Score: 1

Virtual Box is good for playing around with on your home desktop. But running a complete desktop OS and another complete desktop OS in a VirtualBox is going to have obvious implications in terms of performance. VMWare ESx however is an operating system with a very small footprint. This gives you more resources to allocate to your virtual machines. Also vmware ESx is pretty good for accessing virtual machines on from a remote location because it comes with VMware infrastructure client which is pretty good.

Windows is alot more stable than people here give it credit for, but I can see that many of the Linux fanboys have alterior motives and exaggerate the problems with Windows. I also use Linux but I accept that Windows is better in some situations. I certainly don't think open source software would be suitable for this kind of system. If people have source then it's easier to find exploits.

Ubuntu has never been in profit and has been sending free cd's to all kinds of places. I don't think Mark will care much if he has to spend a bit of money to realise his dream.
