    REALLY BAD ANALOGY TIME!!!

I am a police officer, I am issued a glock 18 sidearm that fires 9mm rounds in a semi-automatic fashion, but in my infinite wisdom I decide that i want a "superior" firearm. I do NOT listen to those in charge, nor do I follow the set guidelines. I instead purchase an assault rifle that fires 7.62mm rounds and fires at over 800RPM, citing that it is a "superior" weapon better suited for the task at hand.

Do you agree that i should; at the very least be reprimanded if not fired ???

  3. Its called economics... on Wii Shortages Costing Nintendo 'A Billion' In Sales · · Score: 0
Lets assume that Nintendo in their infinite wisdom has at least one economist on their staff (its not like they are a huge company and would have an office full of them). That economist, after hearing about the MASSIVE SHORTAGE COSTING US 100 MILLION IN SALES would look at the figures (the statistics: how much they produce, how much it costs to produce another 100 000 units, etc) and determine the optimal amount of units to produce to MAXIMIZE their profits (by minimizing their production costs).

Thats why they are selling as much as they are. They don't care about the loss of 100 million because the cost to produce the extra units would result in LESS profit then they are currently experiencing. This is a very simplistic overview of what they are doing on a decision basis.

  4. War ever changing? on Carnegie Mellon Gets $14.4M to Build Robo-Tank · · Score: 0
Back in the day, there were 2 or more sides, with soldiers. These soldiers held the ground, attacked and defended.

Then came the invention of tanks and planes. These planes then bombed areas, then tanks rolled on through. Then the soldiers came up to hold the ground with the support of tanks, they also helped attack and defend.

Now there will be 'Mechs'. The plan will still be almost exactly the same. The planes will bomb the shit out of the target. The tanks AND mechs will roll in getting the entrenched enemy. Then the soldiers will come up to hold the ground with the support of tanks AND mechs.

In each scenario human soldiers play a vital role, with it being important to note that despite all the technological advances we have had to date. A General still wants there to be a soldier with 2 feet upon the ground at a location. This is because an individual can do things planes and tanks and human controlled mechs cannot. These things might not seem to be that important at first but in the long run, in war like conditions, they become essential.

    1. Tanks, planes, 'mechs' all require extensive research. Extensive research requires large amounts of money, moreover, even when the research has been completed there is a continued requirement to improve the machine. Other nations will research there own machines in response. This results in a never ending cycle where continued research is paramount to maintaining the advantage of using the machine in the first place (to gain an advantage over you foe).

    2. Tanks, planes, 'mechs' all cost immense amounts of money to produce (when compared to an individual soldier). Moreover, these machines require continual servicing, parts need to be replaced, upgrades need to be installed and general maintence needs to be performed. This requires people with extensive training, this extensive training requires a large amount of funds to be spent upon the people. This invariably results in a select few people getting trained to do this specialized task. In war people die, so when these highly specialized people die and there is no one to maintain the machines they invariably stop working. It called attrition. 3. I have more but i have work to do :(

This is a bit off topic but i think its close enough to count.

Has anyone ever considered that some people are naturally 'bad' and others are 'good'? I know, simple question and hardly scientific, but seriously. Has anyone ever considered that people are pricks because they are pricks and the people are good because they are good people?

Who is to say that violence (not to say people can not learn to do something, just that they may be inclined)? Using a very simplistic example: In pre-school there are different types of kids, there are kids who play with the blocks by themselves and there are kids who knock those same blocks down for no particular reason. There are people who form groups and talk amongst themselves and others who prefer to be alone.

Why must we assign all behavioural actions to a singular cause??

I have very limited needs that pertain to me; my issues concerning the GPL is not to do with not recognising someone elses work (I am more that happy to). My issue is that I want to keep my work, as a deriviate of their work (or more precisely, my code uses their code to do a specifc function and I use what it spits out ) entirely my own.

Am i better off just writing all of my own code from scratch?

I do a little bit of programming (for my own personal systems, mainly embedded) and I understand that for personal use the GPL and its lawyers will NOT prosecute me and chase me across the outback as I am one single person.

However, I would like to know (and I am asking on slashdot because I am confused not because I dont understand how to use google) how I can use GPL'ed code and libraries within my own work and NOT have to release my code.

    Thanks in advance

  11. I do not understand??? on The Latest From the Front in the Console Wars · · Score: 1

I can not understand how anyone can believe that the Wii is in the process of losing or is going to start losing market share. Nintendo have traditionally released a certain type of game for their consoles; the only change in the system is the way the user interacts with the console. If anything, Nintendo has gone from being forecast as the potential loser of the console wars (with the gamecube) to market leader for the next generation consoles.

I find it interesting that many people find the Wii to be "not what they want in a console". The Wii is a classic nintendo console that aims to satisfy a certain market. If you don't like Zelda, Pokemon, Mario, Metroid or the generic cartoonish games and puzzle games that Nintendo and its 3rd party developers focus on. Then look elsewhere but do not fool yourself into thinking that because you, the only important consumer in all the world, doesn't appreciate the Wii or its games will mean that it is destined to fail.

I personally think that seeking to play the latest and greatest games will always be constricted to the PC market. For instance, crysis has just been released and as far as i know is unable to be utilized by any of the next generation consoles. If you are looking for a graphic intensive game your only option is the PC.

A question: how have the *new* games of the PS3, Xbox360 and Wii changed from the last generation of consoles?

If you answer only refers to graphics mabye you should reconsider exactly what you want from you console and your gaming experience. To me, there are prettier things in the world than pixels.
