    What good is theoretical physics for if you can't compare the theories with experimental results?

    It gives the Young Earth Creationists the out "they can't prove any of this stuff." I'm convinced that's part of the government's motive in slashing NASA exploration.

    We used to use DLT but there were problems with it. LTO and LTO2 has been fantastic. And moving tapes offsite in case of a disaster can help you sleep better. I do like the xraid, though, very nice stuff.

    In the Real World, tape is widely used for large scale backups. It stores well for years and has a high GB per dollar.

    I would NEVER trust my archival data to a 400GB drive that cost about as much as a LTO2 tape.

    We bought a bunch more LTO2 tapes for ~CA$75. Way less than a 400 GB drive and far less things to worry about ("Will the motor spin up if I need it in 2 years?" etc etc)

    We use LTO2 and are looking at LTO3. It's an open standard, unlike the GP's Sony adver^Wsuggestion.

    I did oodles of Slackware install floppies in the early 90s but no ISOs. The largest single thing I did get via modem was Doom II for the Mac from usenet. I was just blown away when it worked.

    Our webserver, DNS servers, logging boxes, DHCP, wireless DMZ, etc, all exist here thanks to OpenBSD (and we support them). And that's off the top of my head.

    The difference here is >1. If the hit in your hypothetical scenario was 25% (525 tracks vs 700) it would indeed be news, yes?
