    This is the best "official" microsoft scripting language. Basically it is VBScript with some fancy stuff added in.

    It isn't worth the trouble to do it in Excel, expecially not anything professional!

    Buckle down and do it for real--write an application. Heck, even VB6 is a step up from that.

    Note: I actually tried to do a large project in excel, utilizing Pivot Tables, VBA, and outside DLLs. It was a MESS! The speadsheet would corrupt monthly, sometimes weekly, and it took forever to compile the data in. Later on I rebuilt it as a SQL Server, MSOLAP, and ASP.NET application. It hasn't crashed once since then.

    Wal-Mart decides that because there is now a law against selling M-Rated games to minors, they'll just hedge their bets and stop selling M-Rated games. Wal-Mart, being a huge chain of stores, is no longer buying M-Rated games from the distributor.

    Not likely. Rmember, Walmart still sells guns, alcohol, and firearms (at least in my state). All of which cannot be sold to minors. So this is nothing new. Walmart will continue to sell anything that makes them money without tarneshing their image (you wont find porn or GTA in walmat).

    But seriously, I think the only people really wining about this proposed law are teenagers with nothing better to do (like go outside or get a job). It isn't going to affect any adult, and all this is doing is applying the same restrictions we have on video rentals and sales to video games.

    Please, you'll survive.

    I think he left out a lot of languages. Delphi should certanly register, as well as a number of scripting languages (vbscript, javascript). It looks like he just picted a subset of languages that he could think of and used those.

    I dont consider this to be great research on their part.

    I'll second that. If the parents are devoted it can be done with astounding results.

    I dont think I'll ever subject my children to public schooling. And I'm more worried about the teachers than the students.

    So what if he posted the same article on Oracle's web site, or IBM's. Whould that change anything for you. Actually he posted the article on his blog first.

    And bashing open source is fine so long as he has a point. And as a small business owner, with employees (who also have families), he does have a point. It is really hard to make a living when you give away everything you make.

    That might be funny if the author actually had a monopoly. The guy competes with Microsoft. He doesnt work for them (except to write this column once a month).


    As is he competes with Source Safe, CVS, Subversion, PVCS, and lots of others.


    Hard to call that a monopoly. Heck, Microsoft doesn't even have a monopoly in that space.

    Remember, this guy works for (and owns) SourceGear. This is not Microsoft.

    Basically, he has no monopoly. Excecially with his bread and butter products: Source Code managment.

    Lets count the competitors: CVS, Subversion, PVCS, SourceSafe, Star Team, .....

    Then you can do things like

    Then you can use + and - to add and remove items from the set.

    Comes with Visual Studio, and will do just about anything a group of 1-5 developers could want.

    I know people trash Source Safe, but for small groups of developers, it isn't that bad.

    Otherwise, you could try The Valt (http://www.sourcegear.com/vault/index.asp), but you need SQL Server to run it.

    That is the nice thing about Analysis Services. It is "Free" (as anything is from Microsoft). Basically, if you own a copy of MS SQL Server (a non-MSDE version) then you have Analysis Services. Note: you can buy the Developer Edition of SQL Server for $50.

    It comes with some sample cubes to check out, and you can browse the data using Excel.

    That is a bit simplistic. Probably the biggest advantage of OLAP over SQL servers (any of them) is SPEED! OLAP does agregation querys hundreds of times faster than SQL servers.

    I've seen SQL querys that took hours to compute only take a matter of seconds for an olap cube.

    But yes, OLAP is used for reporting, but really its strength lies in analysis, which means you are not relying on predefined reports.

    I was comparing finding data using that new-fangled Mosilla, verses Gopher. I remember Gopher being very obtuse and switched to Mosilla.

    It is called ease of use, also known as a RAD development. Fact is, using delphi you can get a program done in roughly half the time, complete with a gui ui. That is why Delphi/Kylix is importaint. That is why C# exists (and looks like delphi).
